Jamala wrote this song in 2014, when Russia launched a war against Ukraine and occupied and annexed the Crimean peninsula, which is part of Ukraine, and the Crimean Tatars were particularly affected. Crimean Tatars are the indigenous people of this territory. In 1944, the USSR government deported the Crimean Tatars to Siberia and the Far East, i.e. to remote regions of the USSR. And their houses were given to the Russians by the USSR government. After the collapse of the Soviet Union and the formation of the state of Ukraine, the Crimean Tatars returned from different places to their native land and lived happily in friendship with other peoples of Ukraine. That is, 70 years after the Soviet Union deported the Crimean Tatars from their ancestral lands, Russia did the same thing again. Jamala is a Crimean Tatar. In this song, she also recalls the story of her grandmother, who was deported in 1944, during which many innocent people died on the way from hunger, disease and beatings...

That words on Tatarian language use to say Jamala's grandma about her life that was ruined by deportation.

Thank you for your reaction and your interest in Ukrainian music! In my opinion Jamala used minimalistic beat on purpose to emphasize on cold, dark and empty atmosphere. It matches with the song's storytelling.

Please react to eurovision 2022 Cyprus live at the semi-final. The song is called Ela and the artist is Andromache (Andromache-Ela). It's the best song ever that didn't qualify for the final but it was qualified by the people. It's in both Greek and english, so you'll understand its meaning and also get to hear Greek, which is such a beautiful language!! The staging is also amazing. It is inspired by the birth of venus. Venus (or Aphrodite in Greek mythology) was runored to be born in Cyprus!!

@@wyeueiieisisjsj I disagree. Many reactors have had problems with the live performance as well. Even with the compilations, most of them have muted or even skipped Cyrprus on their reactions.

The beat is like heartbeat, and it emphasizes her voice and emotions that her voice carries without any distraction from instruments.
