Jak II - Any% Speedrun World Record History

Ойындар

Speedrunners thrive on broken games. Where others see hassle and disappointment, runners see opportunity. Pushing the game to its limits is par for the course. Imagine finding your game’s holy grail, the glitch that breaks the run wide open, but your game is basically on round the clock life support. When you’re always one wrong move away from a run killing game crash, is it worth it? Quick, someone get the crash cart, Jak II is coding again.
The Jak series is no stranger to huge glitches that save a ton of time. Whereas the original game steadily lowered the time down over 20 years with new discoveries, the biggest trick in Jak II is found instantly. A perfectly predefined package for prospective players. That doesn’t mean it’s going to be easy though. It won’t just be the metal heads that test your mettle. Strap in, this zoomer has no brakes. Welcome to Speed Docs.

    The inclusion of the speed runner interviews elevates Speed Docs to the top of my list for the genre. The interviews provide the human element to the story and great insight into the task speed runners face. I look forward to the next installment from the Speed Docs team.

    @@Wieprzek All those people who watched a twitch streamer react instead of watching the video themselves. It's basically giving the people who already have a ton of viewers more viewers without them having to do any work. A video like this isn't like a game, no one is going to go watch another hour and thirty minute long video and give the actual creator the views they deserve while when streamers play games, people watching will more likely want to play. Jay Exci did an excellent video on reaction content a few months back, and he showed there was no significant boost in the metrics KZread uses after Hasan watched his video. Imagine the hours spent on a video like this, only for a twitch streams with thousands of viewers who would have watched this video, and that streamer profits off of doing none of the work besides sitting and watching a KZread video.

    During the Jak 2 Any% Tournament, Ouiji and Headstrong faced off in round 4. Headstrong ended up winning 56:35 to 56:51 in a race that never saw the 2 separated by more than 30 seconds throughout the game. They later faced each other in the Grand Finals where Headstrong also took the victory to take a clean sweep of the tournament. kzread.info/dash/bejne/qaqe2dttlquxabA.html for the round 4 race between HS and Ouiji.

    I love speedrunning so much as a concept because it really combines sport and art. Few mediums can do that- For instance, figure skating, and slam poetry. But the interesting thing about speedrunning is how the art and the sport are made by completely different teams. You can for sure argue that any sport is its own art form and entertainment- such as professional wrestling-, but I think the confluence of a created artwork and the skill of competition comes together in an interesting and fun way with speedrunning especially.

    As far as I remember, there were no other runs at the time beside Mkt2015's one. While the Mar's tomb skip was known for some time, I had to find my way through the red and yellow barriers, which I eventually found after some trial and errors. Fun fact, my run was rejected on SDA because it wasn't "good enough", and to this day the 4h42 is still the current SDA run.

  • @smokerg4l762

    @smokerg4l762

    2 жыл бұрын

    That’s actually crazy that you cracked both barrier skips on your own when there was no one else to workshop skips with. Mars Tomb Skip is so heavily associated with the barrier skips nowadays that it never even occurred to me that anyone would have done this sequence break without them. You probably set this games route forward a year with those two OoBs alone. I don’t doubt Tomjak would have found them when he started but it’s cool that the first ever single segment run laid down such a foundation. You also did the first Jak 3 run if I recall correctly? If you have the time, you should reach out to ThaRixer at some point. He would probably be interested in documenting your insights from that game for a future video project.

    Interisting that Jak 2 even hat crash problems for casuals. As a kid didn't have one crash, maybe it has something to do with the PAL version of Jak 2? I had the Jak 2 Platinum (Pal) version

    Never had a problem playing casually on my US black label version. Might be partially due to the console version, and partially due to spending plenty of time dicking around in the city crashing zoomers into things and getting killed. Some of the crashes seem tied to making the game load too much too fast, just hanging around the same area for a while and giving it time to breathe may reduce them.

    Most crashes come from skipping certain cutscenes to quickly. Outside of that it generally has to do with how long the game has been running. The longer you play jak 2 the more likely it’ll crash out of nowhere. Only a few exceptions to that like after metalhead mash since that happens usually from the game pretty much giving up on loading the war with the metalheads

    Never knew the history of this one. I never even casually beat the game because of the on-rails turret mission being too hard for me. I would just go hoverboard and confess my love to Keira. But.. she never said it back 😭

    I was honestly like from 1hr to 1hr 12m like "So where's Krew Skip gonna come in there's no way with the time left it's gonna get explained" like even me at the time who wasn't really running anything outside of ILs knew about Krew Skip, I had seen the Debug Info on Krew Skip at pure random chance and was utterly amazed at how these games were getting massacred (Was around the time I started watching R&C / J&D runs as a whole. but I was also expecting Daxter Chase Skip--
