Most excellent! I used the information contained in this video when I took an XK8 for a test drive a couple of days ago. I've located an immaculate, rust free 4 litre with full JSH, 100k on the clock, waxoyled, Adamesh stage 1 exhaust, mint interior etc. Lovely car to drive the XK8, I particularly enjoyed the J-gate gearbox, the ability to manually switch between the ratios makes the car more involving to drive, especially when 'making progress' on twisty roads. They are a very impressive GT and I believe that they will be next in line to see their values rise like that of the XJS. Given the prices that good XJS cars now command, the XK8 makes even more sense. It's the better car, and it has the E-Type styling cues- which is what really attracts me to them. The later XK8 abandoned those styling traits, so for me at least, the original XK8 has real appeal. Keep up the good work!

Nice video, can I add one thing to the first-time XK8 or R owner - Bore wash. Jags like our xk8's or xkr's have an auto choke type system that revs the car a little to warm up, the revs stay above 1100 or 1200 rpm then after around 20-30secs the revs drop to around 650rpm, this is then the 'safe' time to drive the car. If you don't let the car warm up it can get flooded with too much fuel in the cylinder bores and apparently it's not as easy as starting the old Morrie Minor back in the good old days after that happens LOL. I haven't had this issue myself but I've heard it happen to others if you don't give her enough time to warm up. My 04 XKR was supplied to me with a Valet key only...I didn't even know back then. I got a flat battery once and was in our capital city of Wellington, I had to call a breakdown repair bloke, I had just enough juice in the battery to open the boot or I would have been stuffed. I also couldn't stop the engine from that start as I was scared she wouldn't start again, of course, I got a "transmission fault" warning in my dash (this is due to the flat battery only more than likely as many Jag owners will tell you - many many issues with Jags can be attributed to a flat or low battery). I had to order a new battery but needed to drive home - an hour north!, when you get a trans warning the transmission will automatically be switched to "Limp Home" mode. Limp home supposedly 'preserves' the trans from 'further damage' and only lets you shift to 3rd or 4th gear (sorry can't remember which but it won't let you go into top gear that's for sure) mine's the 6-speed ZF unit - I must mention here that I think it stayed in 3rd gear from the start - so I had no 1st or 2nd gear, it began movement and stayed in 3rd (or may have been 4th), what a weird sensation that was too, the torque to accomplish this was bizarre. It felt sluggish and slow to act like one of those go-carts with 1 gear only LOL - so I had to drive 100km home at around 80-90kph and she was around 3500rpm - 4500rpm I think, that was screaming to me! Anyway, IF I could have stopped and restarted the car the trans fault would have reset and disappeared (it may have done the same fault thing but possibly not as the battery would have been charged a little after a few kms) - many Jag owners will tell you many faults disappear and the car seems fine when you simply restart the engine! I couldn't do that as my battery was almost dead so I had to drive home 100km in a much higher gear. The new battery arrived a few days later and she is fine ever since. That is how I learned the green valet key issue too, I was somewhat angry at the car sales bloke to give me a valet key only, he had several Jags so must have known, this bloke had magically become no longer in the car game. I have bought 2 new key fobs (in transit), correct transponder chips (I hope, according to jagforums people) and 3 blank tibbe 8 keys. I plan to 'create' 2 new fobs with the new style switchblade type mechanism. A bit of dremelling may be required if the blades are tibbe 6 in the fobs but these fobs supposedly have tibbe 8 blades rather than the tibbe 6 blades I have seen advertised...we shall see I guess. Either way I can create them and then have the locksmith program the chips. Sorry this is sooooo long! Cheers from NZ.

Trevor, thanks for the comment. You are obviously having fun with your Jag. Low battery voltage is an issue as you found out. Understand your frustration when you know restarting might fix everything but also might not start again. Agree better to be safe. I don't have the power fold mirrors on my 2004. Many US spec XK8 did not, as well as most of my collection up to past the mid 2000s BMWs and Porsches. I assume reason is that our street parking is wider, and not as many one-way roads. (Meaning passenger side mirror is not exposed to traffic flow as in UK)....Don't forget to mention the time out from tabbing immobilizer button on fob to switching on engine! Thats made me look dumb a few times.

Even dealers can be idiots. I got money off my used 97 xk8 from a dealer as "the electric windows were not operating correctly". I paid for it, then simply lowered the windows all the way, held the button down till I heard the click, raised them then listened for the click denoting the upper and lower limits were now reset. After that, they were perfect. Also wanted to point out that it is best to raise and lower the hood from the middle of the back to avoid stress to the hood.

Gareth, no I don’t have spacers fitted. I am not too concern about the width as the BBS alloys are a little wider anyway. I was also worried about upsetting suspension and the wheel bearing wear. The wheel arch extensions are part of the R Performance kit. You got them when you bought the BSS wheels as they extend beyond the wheel arch, or more than the orginal wheels. There is more about this the R performance video see link at the bottom. The spats aren’t particularly complicated and are really just a rubber strip moulded to suit the profile of the arch.
