Jaguar F-Pace SVR 1988 edition. Why you should buy this & not an Aston DBX, Cayenne turbo, SVR, etc.

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The revised Jaguar F-Pace SVR first appeared in 2022 and was a thorough re-engineered version of the original. It's a big improvement but can it really compete with the likes of the Aston Martin DBX and Porsche Cayenne Turbo? Let's find out;

    I think the popularity of things like the Lamborghini Urus shows that there's a market for four big chrome trumpets. If you don't want them, you probably also don't want a supercharged V8.

I exuded it as it was one of the first models but I think I had to take it back 4 times. 1st was a suspension knock which was there from the get go, then a engine warning light, then I had little things like the boot not closing and the engine belt was making a funny noise. Apart from that, it was the best car Iv ever owned.

    Harry, a big thank you from the USA. I have a 2016 XJR that I simply cant let go. The other day I saw your old video on the same and I noted the orange detail on the grill surround, rear view mirrors and rear spoiler, so i took it back to Jag and had them do the same last week. The car is anthracite grey and it looks great. Once Jag cancelled the XJ replacement, i bought a 2 door S560 AMG to replace the XJ, but after driving that one home decided to keep the XJR after all. And I’m glad i did, the AMG is now gone. The Jag V8 supercharged engine is simply awesome. And so in the Uk I have ordered (quite a while ago) an F-Pace SVR. It still hasn’t gone onto Jag’s build schedule but I wanted to get that engine again before Jag goes all electric. I was looking at a DBX but now I’m retired I couldn’t get my arms around the additional cost when the F-Pace SVR offers so much value. And, I also have a 1985 XJS v-12 in the UK that is undergoing a bare metal respray to Amethyst Grey, an SVR paint. It has had a complete engine and suspension rebuild with KWE and I’m taking it to the Bespoke Rallies trip to the Pyrenees in May, following which I’m retracing your Spain road trip in the Porsche 911. Thanks for all you do, really good content presented in such a down to earth way!

    Just tried a Maser Grecale Trofeo. Very fast and capable, but completely forgettable (on mute). This Jag sounds devine and how the Maser should have sounded. Kudos to Jag and great review as usual!

    I have owned the 2019 model for two years. Still love it, it has such punching acceleration and sounds wonderful. They are so rare, the "how many left" website shows just 1300 in the UK. As for fuel consumption, the best I have managed on a journey from South Devon to/from Heathrow is 31.5 mpg, on premium fuel. My wife said I was wasting my money on that, but using E10 the best I have managed is 25.5. That's obeying motorway speed limits and driving sensibly. My old 1988 XJ 3.2 never managed more than 27 mpg, 240 HP, v/s 550 HP. That shows how much efficiency gain has occurred over the years. Maybe I will upgrade in the final production year of these fine cars. I do miss the smoothness of the old XJ on bumpy roads, that's the only downside as far as I am concerned, but there are very few roads where it is a problem.

    Wow what an amazing soundtrack. I always thought Jaguar could have made the f pace a bit more luxurious as after all it's a Jag. I've driven a few and they do feel cheap inside. However what an engine.

    You’re so right. I currently run an 21 F Pace P400 - the 3 litre 400 ho petrol one. It is a fabulous car. In 52 years of driving it’s the most competent A-B car I’ve ever owned. And it was great in the recent snow too. The computer system has been a pain in the bum with its tendency to do bizarre things. But it doesn’t matter as soon as you start driving you forgive it all - and Barrett’s of Ashford the main dealer have been exemplary in their support of the computer problem’s. Why people buy BMW and Audis instead of these I don’t know. Just waiting til March when hopefully the SVR arrives!! And you are wrong about one thing - the exhausts look GREAT. It’s a performance car and needs a to be a bit shouty. If you are reading this and you’ve never driven an F Pace (even the 2litre diesel is really nice!) go drive one.

    Harry... you are getting old... at least your comments seem to indicate you are. Those exhaust pipes are simply awesome and on a performance car, that is what an exhaust should look like... shiny and shouty. But really, I do love the way you find something to "not like", just to appease those who think car reviewers must find something they don't like, but you also know that no Jaguar officials won't give a hoot that you didn't like the exhaust tips... so you won't endanger your future chances of getting more Jags to review. You are a true professional Harry... you play the game like a master.

    The Gen 1 did nothing for me but this one looks pretty polished and elegant as well! Looks are quite tame also, which is a plus in my book. The quad exhausts could use some dark paint. Certainly one of the last v8s out there. Design reminds me of my X3M, perhaps that's why I like it.

    Fantastic cars I’ve owned old shape svr in ultra blue when the new shape came out I had to place a deposit on one . Added a big spec which bumped up the price another £13k the new shape is amazing but lacks in the areas you point out , so I gave mine straight to lister who address it especially the back end with carbon diffuser and carbon tips and the total cost wasn’t much more than this heritage addition plus you get more power and a better sounding exhaust. I choose sorrendo yellow from there premium pallet , it gets lots of positive comments everywhere I go

    The F-Pace SVR is the best looking SUV bar none, in my opinion. And the sound of that engine is beautiful. I have always had a soft spot for supercharged engines. Now, having said all that, I also really like the look of the VW T-Roc R. I realise that it is not the sort of vehicle you normally test, but I would REALLY like you to have a look at it. I am a retired, single guy and believe it could be the ideal 'only' vehicle for me.

  • @siraff4461

    I really like that. The exhausts looked OTT in your garage but in some of the panning shots when it had got a bit grubby they fitted in well. I think if they were black (or even a much more subdued silver) instead of chrome they would be fine. 250kg more than a project8 is only a couple of decent sized blokes in the back so considering its an SUV I think thats pretty good. I'm still not keen on the ipad stuck on look of the screen but in general that interior looks beautifully done. I wish they would just integrate it - even if that meant simply extending a binnacle around it finished in the same leather as the dash - it would look a lot more like part of the car. I like the sound, the seats, the looks, the space, the attention to details (forged wheels still aren't common for instance), the engine and the whole general demeanor. My only big issue is that my brother is currently in the process of rejecting his i-pace after 15 breakdowns (complete, locked in place breakdowns) in 10 months. From my own experience of JLR stuff you flip a coin. They either last an age without any issues or give one problem after another. It is only ("only") £81k though which for what it is is a complete bargain.

    Being a proud 2021 F-Pace SVR and ex AMG owner, can't agree more with your review other than tailpipes. It's one if not, the best sounding V8's around so why not flaunt it!. Another plus side is the non-turbo lag due to normally aspirated supercharger, giving instant power equal to any EV.

    Nice review Harry, thanks! Up until the Covid/supply chain issues you could pick from the SVO premium paint palette which also allowed you to choose matte versions if you were willing to pay for it. You could also choose a "bespoke" color of your own choice, again if you were willing pay and wait. Now days, as Jaguar ICE vehicles are winding down, several options are gone for good. There are also reports on that you get one key till they catch up with owners reporting months later they are still waiting. Truly the end of an era is approaching.
