    3:29 Amps. The voltage of a battery is ideally fixed, with the amperage fluctuating depending on how much power your motors are drawing. Batteries are always amp limited for their discharge. The reason the SF90 can only supply 220 hp from the batteries is because each cell has a current draw limit, and if you want to increase that limit you have to increase the amount of cells you put in parallel. However, you're with the amount of cells you can put in parallel as if you put the cells in series, that's when you increase voltage. So if you have let's say 2 battery cells and each is 3.7 volts, and has a maximum current it can supply of 5 amps, then the 2 cells in series would stay at 5 amps but have 7.4 volts, whereas if you put them in parallel you'd have 10 amps of max draw but still at 3.7 volts. The battery pack in a car needs to have a set voltage because the electric motors need a specific voltage to operate efficiently, in most electric cars that happens to be around 400 volts. After that, the amount of current you can supply depends on the amount of cells you have, because you _need_ a certain amount of cells in series to achieve that 400 volts, so multiples of that amount increase your current. Small battery packs like the one in the SF90 do not have enough batteries in parallel to provide the maximum amount of amperage the motors could take (if all 3 of them were operating at once, they can max out one at a time though). In order to increase this you either have to make a larger battery pack, which Ferrari didn't want to do because it adds weight and they didn't have the space for it, or buy cells with a higher discharge rating (also called the "C" rating). The issue with this is that current Lithium ion battery chemistries get more and more unstable and expensive the higher that C rating is, not to mention they also don't last nearly as long, so at the end of the day you have to balance the factors to design a battery pack that's "good enough". In the future we'll have better battery chemistries which can provide much higher discharge rating without exploding or excessively degrading the battery capacity. Ferrari likely overdesigned the motors so that in the future you could take your SF90 to the Ferrari dealership and have a new battery swapped in which has a higher C rating, then your car would "magically" gain another 255 horsepower since the full 475 hp output of all 3 motors could be made use of.

    Also don't forget that motor power density is really good these days. Like you said, Ferrari might have selected them for cross usage and modularity but won't be using the full power in this case. Probably have it earmarked for some phev version of their SUV

  • @becauseiwasinverted7971

    @becauseiwasinverted7971

    Thanks for additional clarification. Slightly separate point to yours but is it not also the case that the battery and motors are not producing their peak power at the same time as the combustion engine and that the 220hp is the motor power at the time you get peak power from the engine when in reality could be higher lower in the engine's rev range? I have a tesla and above 50ish mph, torque from motor starts to dip with field weakening and once it falls away faster than the revs are building the power starts falling as well. So in single speed electric cars, peak power happens once in the entire speed range of the car

  • @TsLeng

    @TsLeng

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@becauseiwasinverted7971 torque in electric motor decrease with rpm but power is a function of rpm and torque. So it's possible to get max power out of a motor almost throughout providing no limits on the input and cooling etc. You are right that peak power from ICE and motor might never coincide and if they do, only briefly. Not as simple as adding both peak powers up.

    I think a potential reason for the difference between the total peak of the electric motors and the battery capacity might be that they just wanted to have more headroom on each of the motors, to be able to spike the power where and when needed, for their traction control system. They probably couldn't get away with fitting a larger or heavier battery and keeping things light at the same time.

I agree that the styling is a mess, I think you were kind in not pointing out that an otherwise pretty front end is completely spoiled by them adding a mustache! What were they thinking? Poor steering feel is another no-no, just breaks the bond between you and the car. Then finally, there's no storage at all, so you can't use it for road trips and great experiences. What is it for? I suppose it's for parading around London and other cities where an electric-only mode is required. I'd buy an 812GTS and keep it out of the cities.

Yes you can help with the thermal shock to a degree but even an F1 team can only preheat the engine to a point (they still have to run it upto temp as the engine runs much hotted then the coolant or oil). My point is it's less then ideal!! I have personally seen BMW I8's with ICE problems for this very reason (hence my question).

    I do like your reviews Harry, but I think the SF90 needs more driving to understand it. I have owned my SF90 for 2 months. For the first few weeks I totally agreed with you on the steering wheel, however now I am used to the endless settings, I totally love it. Th car itself is incredibly powerfull, and coming from an Aston Superleggera, is unbelievable at laying it down. The technology in this car is the future, but the whole package requires some getting used to. I didnt quite understand your comment with handling at speed, however now understanding the car with 2 months experience, it is quite simply stunning. I was at a Ferrari track day at Oulton Park last friday, and no other Ferrari could touch it. The problem for anyone trying to review this car is that it is so far ahead of its time, and mind boggling you need at least 3 weeks driving it to really appreciate it, and fully understand it.

    i think it’s a car that all the reviewers have been quick to dismiss in terms of driving experience. lots of cars take time to understand what they are trying to communicate to you and considering the complexity of the sf90 this comes as no suprise. throughout history there have been many cars that take time to master (shelby cobras, some 911s, dodge vipers) just because you can’t push them to the limit before becoming familiar with them does not mean they are not good drivers cars, it’s good to hear from your real world experience of this which confirms my suspicions.

    I have a deposit on one due in November 2022. I didn’t pick the Fiorano pack because the electronic shocks are much better on the road and, in my opinion, when you’re pressing on. I agree the rear is a mess so I went with the Spider version which cleans it up substantially. But, the technology is amazing. And as a day to day supercar, it’s currently an unbeatable package (until something surpasses it). I’m fortunate enough to have an AMG GTR, 718 GT4 in manual and some other interesting things, so I feel the Ferrari just compliments these extremely well. Oh, I also have some custom luggage to maximise the storage. A must if you want a weekend away with it. Lastly, and one gripe that annoys me. Applecar play, a software flash, is a complete rip off. AND no wireless connectivity nor any wireless charging pad. So your phone is stuck to windscreen with cables floating around. Just awful. First world problems though 🤷‍♂️

    It used to be that CF was a light material with desirable properties, therefore making parts of sports cars out of it made them better cars - but at a cost, since CF is expensive. Then manufacturers started offering useless, purely cosmetic CF. Certainly they would sell you as much expensive material as they could, and idiots would buy it for the singular reason that it showed others how much they had spent. Eventually, someone will sell a cotton t-shirt that says “This cost $1m”. And its only point would be to show others that one spent $1m on a t-shirt. Before that stage, the only thing slightly less stupid is that horrendously ugly stripe on the SF90 that you can only buy if you paid for the Fiorano pack. Its only conceivable purpose, even at the expense of making the car as ugly as sin, is to advertise the eye-watering amount one paid for options.

    4:00 between battery power and actual wheel power you have to factor in the DC/AC conversion losses, a 10% is a reasonable figure. Then, regarding the power of the motors, I suppose that they wanted each motor to be capable of handling way more than one third of the power available from the battery, for the best possible torque vectoring margin. In EV world, the power available has always a bottleneck in the "C" rating of the battery, that is, the ratio between charge/discharge power and capacity. Usually anything above 1-2C is going to be very stressful on the battery pack. Here I read 180 kW to 8 kWh, this is equivalent to a C ratio of more than 20, I hope they installed some supercapacitors too, otherwise that battery won't last the warranty period.

Or in other words, I suspect I (and likely many other people) would run out of talent long before we managed to push the vehicle anywhere near its limits. It looks decent, sounds good, goes like stink...but unlike older models of Ferrari and Lamborghini, not something I aspire to driving. And while it's pretty, it's not something I'd have wanted for a poster on my bedroom wall as a kid, either. Unfortunate.

It's nowhere near as fast as the SF90 but it's still fast enough to take me to prison territory in a few seconds and a crash at those speeds is a serious matter. I used to own an Impreza STI and that only had half the power of my M5 but I had more fun in it. I'm not sure what to buy next but my next car will be smaller, lighter and less powerful.

    I must agree ,recently I loaned my old TT to a young lady who is very capable in driving at speed any of their super cars ( 5 )she is very quick and was surprised when she came back to tell me how enjoyable the ride was in the old TT particularly the smooth ride ,so there is fun to be had in older sports cars 👍👨🏻‍🏭

    I'd say all that flickering from the haptic steering wheel controls, as captured on video, is caused by the shutter speed of the camera, change the shutter speed to change the flickering to a point where it isn't flickering (although okay, the flickering looks kind of cool)

    Oh man I hate that two tone bonnet and bumper thing they're doing on these and the new Dino. Looks so much better all one colour.

    Apple don’t charge for car play as they want it to be installed globally and make money on selling the music

    @@faafo2 very good! I’d rather the Ferrari list price was £2k more than feel I’m being ripped off. But in any case i image if I could afford it I probably wouldn’t care 😁

    18:08 LoL It's a true monster, I like the design, it's weird but unique. All that strange controls... I could live with that. And that V8, like all V8s sounds perfect.

    Hi Harry, amazing opportunity to test the SF90 hard on the heels of the Chiron...was the expression 'mind-bending' or 'mind-altering' (as in Altered State)? I did wonder whether you had the drive mode setting in RACE when driving above 8/10ths? I was thinking that perhaps there might be some different programming around the front axle in that mode: It seems an odd trick for its developers to have missed, but there again, this is its first attempt at an electrically driven front axle working in concert with a LaFerrari-like rear axle.
