Art TV Pakistan captured the essence of the event, allowing viewers to feel as if they were present.
On May 8th, 2024, from 5:30 pm to 7 pm, the Amin Gulgee Gallery in Karachi hosted the launch of the "Jagah Hai" catalogue, a group show of performance art originally presented in November 2022. Curated by Amin Gulgee, Sara Vaqar Pagganwala, and Adam Fahy-Majeed, "Jagah Hai" showcased 52 performances by 56 artists from Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Australia, France, and Germany.
The performances simultaneously took place throughout the gallery and its roof over two hours. Since its inception in 2000, the Amin Gulgee Gallery has consistently engaged with performance art, making it a unique noncommercial space in Pakistan. "Jagah Hai" was possibly the largest performance art event in Pakistan, addressing themes of gender, tradition, and individuality. The 200-page catalogue documents all performances and includes essays by the curators and articles by Hamzah Ibn e Wasi, Aquila Ismail, Zehra Hamdani Mirza, and Nageen Shaikh.
The event began with fifteen minutes of simultaneous performances by Hiba Ashfaque, Freddie Carr, Habiba Jahangir, Shanzay Lizey, Zehra Habib Merchant, Tabeer Noorani, and Azad Sur of Faran Qureshi, Rizwan Ullah Khan & Bargees Buns. This was followed by a panel discussion on performance art in Pakistan featuring Sophia-Layla Afsar, Sheema Kermani, Zehra Hamdani Mirza, Nageen Shaikh, and Babar Sheikh.
In conjunction with Art TV Pakistan, viewers can experience the event through a detailed video coverage, bringing the vibrancy and dynamism of the launch to audiences everywhere.
