Jacksnax: Promised Land ‘77’/‘78 Chuck Jerry Full Lesson Grateful Dead/Jerry Garcia

Note for note breakdown of my solo in the style of Jerry Garcia circa ‘77/‘78.
This Chuck Berry classic was played over 400 times by the Dead for 35 years! But by the late 70’s Garcia’s playing had evolved so much he took it places few could imagine by utilizing enclosures, sequences, and chromaticism.
I hope you enjoy the lesson, if so...please leave some feedback below!
Peace!
JD

    Great breakdown and explanation of Jerry’s solo playing, and Chuck was a genius with his lyrics, such as his neologism “motorvating” in ‘Maybelline’.

    great breakdown of an amazing solo. I always wonder how much of jerr's solos were premeditated vs invented on the spot. I can't imagine coming up with those arpeggios in real time but then again he was one of the greats

    Thanks Joel… to be clear these ideas are inspired by Jerry… but not an actual Garcia solo. The ideas and sound are obviously stemming from JG, but there No actual transcription here. I do have some note for note stuff on the GD playlist…but most is derived from my approach to his work. Cheers, JD

    Hi Jack, I’d love to see your take on Althea, especially one that incorporates the same kind of solo with chords as this video. 8/7/82 is a good version to reference

    I love Althea...I know it’s not a common thing to hear, but I love the playing on the recorded version. I think Jerry is killing it there. I’ve had half a mind to slow that sucker down and learn it all, maybe I’ll do my own thing in the JG style...Been swamped with family and teaching. Certainly on the short list for the future, also...I gotta get some other stuff up here other than dead tunes!

    What a great video, thanks so much man. Is this something you got from a specific Dead show or did you just kind make it up in the style of "Chuck Jerry"?

    I know it's a lot more work but a tab either integrated with the video or attached in the description would help immensely. It's difficult to follow along considering the skill level/ear needed for Jerry lines...

    What kind of overdrive did you say at 5:13?

  • @jacksnax4guitar460

    @jacksnax4guitar460

    Hi…actually it’s an onboard TS9 simulation from the Kemper. I can manipulate the gain, tone and blend and level to the amp. I keep the gain low and the tone up. I send more signal to the “amp”. If it gets too shrill and spitty I turn down the blend or the gain level. It’s not the same as an actual TS9 though. To my ear it sounds a little more open than a real TS9. Just try any good open low gain overdrive like a Tim, Timmy, Earth Drive or something like that. Thanks for the question!
