I'm not sure if I agree with most of you guys on this saying it's a brutal call. 57.1 Tripping - A player or goalkeeper shall not place the stick, knee, foot, arm, hand or elbow in such a manner that causes his opponent to trip or fall. Accidental trips which occur simultaneously with a completed play will not be penalized. Accidental trips occurring simultaneously with or after a stoppage of play will not be penalized. If, in the opinion of the Referee, a player makes contact with the puck first and subsequently trips the opponent in so doing, no penalty shall be assessed. It's a grey area at best - he had his stick placed in a spot where the player stepped on and clearly fell from it. Accidental sure but not from a completed play. Watch from the 0:32 second mark at 0.25 speed, it's more clear at that angle.

I agree with your assessment even as a devils fan. Only possible discrepancy I can see is Bitetto seemed he was losing an edge before any contact and actually pushed Hughes’ stick away with his skate. Of course the video was not the greatest and most teams would probably want a call on that play if it was going their way. It was a bit soft but that’s why stick positioning is so important in this game

@@jjsanta2188 He didn't lose an edge, he was crossing over, and when you cross over, you have all of your weight on one leg (the leg that Hughes stick hit). So, unless you can defy physics, that person is going down. I personally think Hughes tried to make it look unnoticeable, he just got caught. He's a great young player, you guys will put it together eventually. Don't know if Lindy Ruff is the guy though. If anyone watched the game, Ruff started screaming Ryan Lindgren "dived" on the previous penalty which wasn't even a trip, and he had an outburst, a few minutes later this scenario with Hughes happened. It's possible Hughes was just following the lead here.

It's hard to tell whether it was a trip or a "blown tire". Bitetto was losing his balance on his own before the stick got near or touched his trailing foot. It wasn't the worst call I've seen by a long shot, and from where the ref stood, it looked like a trip. Whatever, it might have fired the Devils up. They came back from down 3-0 to tie it. Considering the results of the previous three games in this 4-game series, that was an accomplishment for the Devils even though they lost late.

Hughes placed his stick where it caused the opponent to trip and fall. Being accidental has nothing to so with it, stepping on the stick has nothing to do with it. The player who fell is not responsible for watching his feet, to make sure the player behind him has placed his stick where it will not cause him to fall down. The player placing his stick is repsonsible for his stick's location . It is 100% an uninentional trip by Hughes. 1:09 clearly shows the NYR player not being able to see where Hughes has put his stick, so how can he dive? He guessed? Pretty cool. He should quit hockey and just guess the lottery numbers for a living lol.

@@houstondentonrealtor LOL. I suspect that I've seen more hockey games than anyone else commenting here. I've been a die-hard fan since 1967. What's your issue with the comment? In normal speed, it looked like a trip. At 0.25 speed, it looked more (to me) like Bitetto was already losing an edge before Hughes' stick might have barely touched him. Even if it was a bad call, as many here believe, we've all seen MUCH worse calls. I saw Mika Zibanejad get 4 minutes for high sticking (drawing blood) on a play where one Islander player, slashing Mika, ended up hitting his own player in the face. We've seen ridiculous goals allowed and disallowed. If it was a dive, as some believe, I've seen much more obvious ones. Claude Lemieux took a dive and stayed down on the ice "writhing in pain". The dive was so obvious that his OWN COACH, Pat Burns, refused to send the trainer out to see if he was hurt and ordered him to get up and skate back to the bench.

@James Ryan nah you're right. Id do it the adult way. I'd skate to the penalty box, get inside, and sit down. Pretty easy. Then you don't have a 10 minute misconduct. That way, you'd also avoid putting on a display of how you are a little boy, trying to play a man's game.
