This is Hughes being frustrated that he doesn't have the most penalty minutes on the team. He's like "Who's this OEL guy? What makes him so special??"

I disagree with that. I refused to use anything but wooden sticks in high school 10 years ago and I had to bring 3 to every game because it wasn't uncommon for me to break one or two per game. They were reliable in their flex and curve but they were definitely very breakable. I was also a right handed D playing on the left side so my biggest job most nights was to try for a big one timer or slap shot in traffic.

Cost his team the win with that dumb penalty. Hopefully as he gets older he won’t lose his cool like this anymore in crucial moments

he didn't cost his team the win. he took a dumb penalty that we couldn't kill. hopefully the canucks are smarter than some results oriented youtube commenter. our PK cost us the game as it has been and one penalty doesn't decide a 60 minute hockey game.

Girard is one of the nicest most quiet players but yet everyone loves to take their anger out on him. Poor fella. Hope he heals well, truly is dedicated to his team

Hughes taking an awful, selfish penalty and then having his team scored on because of the penalty by the player he has been compared to the most in his career and lost a calder race to gives me life as a fan of a different Canadian team.

If you don't stand up for yourself on occasion then people will cheap shot you without having to be too concerned about consequences. I don't care what the score is, defending yourself is never the wrong thing to do. My guess is you've never played competitive hockey.

Similar point production this year, Makar has 10 in 11, Hughes with 14 in 16. Makar is -7, Hughes is plus 5. Canucks are one of the worst teams in the league. Girard is 10 times better than Makar so far this year.

That should've been a boarding penalty on Girard regardless, and it may even have been charging based on his speed. Shouldn't lose your cool like that in a tie game though.

"Turning at the last second" doesn't make it a legal check per the rule, it's just a common misconception. All that checking into the numbers often does is turn it from a boarding minor into a major, but it wasn't the case here.

He is just about to take the hit shoulder to shoulder and then turns his back to Girard a split second before he gets there. He doesn't have a right to be mad...it was entirely him who caused the hit to be that dangerous.

On the initial hit what was he trying to do? Either try to avoid the check or do a reverse check to hit Girard. He just turns his back and lets Girard hit him.

It is a defensive tactic that is now used in the current NHL for guys who don't like to get hit. They purposely turn towards the boards to discourage hits - because it will be boarding - so the guy getting ready to hit them will pull up. This time Girard hit him anyways and he was pissed. Patrick Kane is a OG master of this. You see it all the time now with all the skinny, fast hockey players in the current NHL. Soccer players on skates essentially.

If you're going to leave a mark because you're upset, at least hurt him.

Once the Avs gained the lead in the 3rd it was over for Vancouver. Mind you, this is an Avs team without Mackinnon (one of the best 3 centers in the league; crucial to the team and special teams), Compher: essential center who would normally sub in for Mackinnon, Byram- possible Calder winner who’s having a breakout year, Francouz- so Kuemper basically has to play every game right now, and a few others.

I'm a season ticket holder and I just sigh most of the time...

Seattle isn't very far away. If Vancouver doesn't improve their product offering, or at least charge less, fans will commute.
