Jack Hanna's long goodbye: How Alzheimer's is stripping away the man the world once knew

Jack Hanna built the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium into one of the nation's best. He then captivated national audiences on David Letterman’s late-night talk show, "Good Morning America" and a number of his own Emmy-winning animal series that still run in syndication. He traveled the globe as a leading animal conservationist promoting Columbus. It was his home for decades.
But at age 76, Alzheimer’s disease has stripped away his memory and the life he led in the public eye for almost a half century. He was first diagnosed in the fall of 2019 with early Alzheimer's but now the disease has advanced to the point where he doesn't know most of his own family.

@@mas5867 I learned early in my Dad's dementia when I asked him a question or two about the past and I saw the anguish in his eyes that he could not remember. I realized that I just need to let him take control of the conversation because he was always trying to teach my brothers and me. I later realized that my father's memories ebbs and flows like the tidal changes. It is just best to enjoy the present time that we all have together.

My Dad died from this disease. The hardest part was, when visiting him, he would always tell me "I am going home with you today". On his last day, he was holding my hand, and turned slowly and grabbed my other hand, and said "I love you Rusty"... he had not forgotten me! Later that day he said this was no way to live, and I told him I would make sure he got home in the next couple of days. He died the following day.... He went home! God Bless you Suzi - You are giving him the comfort he deserves.

Jack and Mrs. Hanna live in one of the most beautiful places on earth - Bigfork, Montana. I live about 45 minutes from them and I didn't know it until I saw this video. Bigfork is right on the beautiful north shore of Flathead Lake, the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi. I am so sorry to learn that he is going through this and very grateful that he has such a loving and caring wife. I always enjoyed watching his shows. To think that such an active and vibrant man has been reduced to this breaks my heart. No one deserves this fate. God bless them both.

Jack Hanna gave us so many wonderful memories and his love of animals and nature showed through in everything he did. His conservation efforts made a huge impact on how animals are kept and bred in captivity today. People would laugh seeing him on the Johnny Carson show because of the animal's antics, but his whole point of being there - was so people could actually see the wonder of that animal and want to save it. Thank you Jack - for taking us to far off lands we would never see ourselves and teaching us about the wonders of animals - big and small, and for leaving behind a Zoo that is world renowned for its efforts in conservation.

My father passed away with Alzheimer's disease. It was hard and I know exactly what you're going through. The only thing I can advise is to not scorn him when he can't remember something: "Nah it's not coming to you" because one of the last things they lose is the ability to know that they've lost. Just let whatever's left of him know that you understand and that he doesn't have to try so hard because you love him no matter what.

We truly hope they find a cure for him and all the others who suffer from alzheimers. Bless you Suzi for caring for him at home with family and friends who love him. That alone will make a difference in his health and well-being. Bless you Suzi and all those who love and care for Jack. My Father in law suffered from this disease also but he was placed in a V.A. hospital and unfortunately he went down hill fairly quicly. His name was also Jack, and luckily my children got to know him and enjoyed walking with their Grampa before he was placed into an institution. They said he never smiled anymore but as soon as my children walked in the room he would always look up and smile at me like he was trying to say Thank-You I am still here, please don't forget about me. My Dad used to drive up to visit him once a week and he always recognized him and would say Hi Leo. Thank you Dad, I'm so glad you stayed healthy and happy all of your days with us. We miss you. And we definitely miss the laughter Jack brought us. Get Better Jack, stay close to Suzi and your family and friends. It helps

Jack is a legend in the animal world. Right up there with Steve Irwin for me. Had the pleasure of meeting him a couple times in my younger years. Such a compassionate and kind guy. He’s earned his quiet and simple life. Just as his wife has. Thanks Jack for all you have done for the world!

Prayers for his wife. That’s a huge job to take care of someone that doesn’t exactly know you like before, but his soul knows everything you are doing for him ❤️

What a kind, intelligent, caring man who made the Columbus Zoo a world class institution. Suzi continues to be a loving and devoted partner. She has a world of people who support her.

I remember when I heard that Jack had Alzheimer's. I was so deeply saddened and still am by this. So happy that he is blessed with Suzi taking care of him. Someday I will see Jack in heaven and we will both be illness free!! How good it will be to see him healthy and whole again!

I will never forget him and his lovely wife for their sharing to us the beauty of animals however big or small in this world. I struggle, like so many people, with a pretty heavy depression and sometimes to try to feel better I go back and watch the episodes of Letterman when Jack Hanna was on. Sometimes I laugh so hard that I almost can’t breathe. What a blessing. I hope that, in some kind of way, he will know and remember just how loved and appreciated he is and always will be.

Having done several shows with Jack, I can tell you Suzi's love for him has shined for years. As well as his daughters. His family loves him unconditionally. She always greeted my daughters and I with hugs and would take my daughters around SeaWorld while I did shows with Jack. WONDERFUL woman
