Nah, the police here did nothing wrong. Read the accompanying article. These horrifically unstable people are not harmless. Family reports regular "raging" incidents like it's some cutesy little quirk of his. Meanwhile, the only person that did any harm to him was himself. Not gonna lay that burden on the feet of law enforcement. Family, friends, and maybe even doctors failed him. Society has zero sense of accountability anymore. They called law enforcement out of fear of him and somehow law enforcement is treated like they're not human beings themselves dealing with someone extremely volatile. All this to demand taxpayer money in frivolous suits. Shameless.

Not to add another woulda, shoulda, coulda, to this family after the loss of their wonderful son, I've no doubt these thoughts have haunted them since their great loss. Just to try to prevent this type of situation in the future, perhaps doctors, patients and parents of people on the autism spectrum should be given a medic alert bracelet for them to wear stating their condition. I know a medic alert bracelet has saved me in the past from this type of nightmare as I have a form of epilepsy that isn't always apparent. Most people only know one type of seizure that is convulsive, which is obvious, but there are a wide range and types of seizures depending on the level and part of the brain where the seizure is happening. In my case, when the type of seizures that I have made me behave strangly and all I needed was to take my medication or something stronger to stop them. Having my medic alert bracelet on was the determining factor between a trip to the hospital vs being taken to jail in restraints what would have made the situation a disaster. I was already battered and bruised from being tackled, prevented from going into my home to take my medication, once I stepped outside to talk to the officer. Having my medic alert bracelet on is why the EMT's were called and why It was decided that I'd go with them and not to jail. Just like this young man, when seizures are triggered, don't touch or try to restrain me or I will fight like a maniac to get away, even harming myself. It's not in my control and not who I am normally, it's the effect that the seizures have. Please, please, please, start making or get a Medic Alert bracelet or necklace if you or a loved one is on the spectrum. It is or could be, as seen here, a matter of life or death.

Land of the free eh? It's about ten years ago when a nineteen year old from the UK lost his medication while on a tour on board a liner. Arriving in the USA he attempted to get a doctors appointment and replace his medication. Because of his anxiety the Custom officers or police decided he needed restraint to such a degree very few modern countries would consider, in fact his response to his treatment was totally unique, he is rathe timid, I think only a bully could have made him react like he did. I can't recall how long he was incarcerated, what I do remember is a photo of him on a site where images of felons are shown, I've no knowledge of him appearing at court but that is a possibility. His photo was curious though, it was evident he had suffered some facial trauma. I know his mother and have watched him grow up, he does get anxious and sometimes a little depressed but I have never known him to cause problems, The whole episode made no sense and why his picture was online for anybody to see was beyond the pale. Again my memory of this so many years back is limited but I have this inkling his mother had to pay to have his photo removed as if it belonged to a private company. Americans may be able to correct me on this as I'd rather it wasn't true. It comes as a shock to see or hear of these incidents when someone in apparent need of medical help is put into the care of law officers instead. This story is about ten years ago, hopefully things have changed, every country has to continually make changes, let's hope this is one of them.

Growing up in a cop family, always remember, the police are NOT our friends. When dealing with them be polite and say as little as possible. No matter how unjust, do NOT even slightly resist them. There will be time later to hash things out with an attorney. If arrested say NOTHING don't even acknowledge your rights. Shut up.

Cops should not handle mental health issues once a person is in custody. There needs to be mental health facilities these people can go to to get the correct care and not be ignored.

He shouldn’t have been in a normal correctional facility, he had way too many problems. The mother was the one who wanted him to be “normal” but he was faaaaaar beyond normal, he needed to be in a psych ward and she let him endear this way for years, thinking what he was doing was fine. Shame on the mother/family

As horrible as it is, he did present as someone on drugs. Or even vice versa. My brother is autistic, I’ve seen meth freak outs, and it is usually people with mental illnesses that do hard drugs. Or obtain mental illness like schizophrenia via drug use. It’s not easily discernible which comes first all the time. They did restrain him to stop him from hurting himself. That doesn’t excuse why he was transferred as soon as the blood was pooling under his skin though. But another issue is that police are required to be especially intelligent, especially in recent years many with experience have quit due to the hatred towards police as it risks their life even more. It’s just bad from top to bottom in the US.

I can not imagine a Mothers feelings even trying to watch this, knowing there is nothing that you could do. People better soon realize that you pay for the thoughts and actions you make. I don't care if you believe it or not, that changes nothing that is going to happen. You have charge of your own destiny, but when someone gets in the way of that, and causes you harm and trouble, they pay the price.
