Make a few clicks on the internet and you'll run across ten fake "Deep Thoughts," and if you're lucky, a few real ones. Our guest Jack Handey created the seminal "Saturday Night Live" interstitial segment and authored several book collections of the material. He also wrote numerous other classic Saturday Night Live sketches, from "Happy Fun Ball" to "Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer." He's been writing in The New Yorker's Shouts and Murmurs section, and these writings, plus work for Outside Magazine and other publications, have been collected in the hilarious "What I'd Say To The Martians: and Other Veiled Threats."
We spoke to Jack in 2008. What's he up to lately? Jack is still writing for The New Yorker, still putting out books, too. His latest book is "Please Stop The Deep Thoughts," which just came out last year.

I didn't know until just now Jack Handy was the actual writer/reader of the bits. His sketches were some of SNL's all time best. Awesome.

I was this year's old when I found this out. This guy raised me every Saturday night when I was a kid. Lol I don't know if that's a positive or negative endorsement...but I loved it.

Growing up I had these cousins that ate McDonald’s every other night cus their parents were both working professionals, one day we told them that McDonald’s burned down! We laughed so hard watching them cry their eyes out, we were mean kids!

Best book ever. I’d also highly suggest John Swartzwelder, The Time Machine Did It.

I have a good one I remember when we tore all the labels off the cans at my grandmother's house and we got in trouble because she was a stickler about what she had to cook the next day and all my dad could do was yell at us and then giggle on the way out

Man Jack Handey is a real genius because I tried writing my own Deep THoughts called "My Own Deep Thoughts" and they not super deep...maybe a couple of inches. ANd def. not as funny. But I do think Jack is some kind of spirit animal cousin of mine because we think about the world the similarly. Like if I saw a person falling from a skyscraper, I wouldn't think "Hey free dummy", but I would htink well hmm, there's an office space opened up with a good view now.
