He sounds nothing like Eric Wallks. Mr Johnson to me, has his own sound and is young and doing his own thing!!!

Can someone please explain the types of scales he's using here? I'm trying to acquire that jazzy, blues sound. I love 9th chords lol. Can someone help me out?

Tyrek Ruffin He's using a lot of minor pentatonic here for the most part with some modal stuff as well as the occasional chromaticism filling in the gaps. I also believe he uses the diminished scale once or twice. If you want to sound bluesy, learn your Pentatonic stuff. If you want to sound jazzier, I suggest you get into different chords like 7ths, 9ths, 13ths, mi7b5s, etc then learn how to solo using chord tones (once you've learned all of your modes, of course). At this point I would suggest looking into a bit of jazz harmony. You don't have to get too too deeply into harmony to do what the jazz guitar greats like Joe Pass do, but it would be a good idea to have a solid grasp of it. Hope this helps.
