J. Krishnamurti - Amsterdam 1981 - Public Talk 1 - Thought and time are the root of fear

J. Krishnamurti - Amsterdam 1981 - Public Talk 1 - Thought and time are the root of fear
Summary:
The crisis is not in the economic world nor in the political world, but in our consciousness.
We have been trained, educated, religiously as well as scholastically, that we are separate souls, individuals, striving for ourselves, but that is an illusion because our consciousness is common to all mankind. We are mankind. We are not separate individuals fighting for ourselves.
Why have human beings, who have lived for over a million years, not solved this problem of relationship?
Thought is born of experience, knowledge and so there is nothing whatsoever sacred about thought. It is materialistic, it is a process of matter, thinking.
Knowledge always lives within the shadow of ignorance.
What is the relationship between desire and will?
Psychologically, inwardly, what is the root of fear?
Meditation must begin with bringing about complete order in your house; order in your relationship, order in one's desires, pleasure and so on.
Compassion is freedom from sorrow.

This channel is managed by the Krishnamurti Foundation Trust, UK, and by the Krishnamurti Foundation of America.
The role of the foundations was described by Krishnamurti when he said, 'The foundations will see to it that these teachings are kept whole, are not distorted, are not made corrupt. They will not give rise to any sectarian spirit in their activities... nor create any kind of place of worship around the teachings or the person.'
We maintain extensive archives of Krishnamurti's original works and all four Krishnamurti foundations are actively engaged in the publication of material in various forms.
Our videos contain thousands of subtitles in more than 25 languages, translated by volunteers from all over the world. If you would like to help us with translating subtitles, please contact us at digital@kfoundation.org

    The slow and gentle nature with which he speaks is the greatest gift he could offer all those who loved him because it's the finest reflection of how we should all look to live life.

    I am not trying to be an ass here but isn't the way he is is just how he is, which I think is a great gift, but should we all live life as him? is that not putting him on high. should we all not find the truth ourselves?

    Lot of ground covered. 1. Man is rest of mankind psychologically. There is no separate individual striving against others. 2. Crisis is in this consciousness which is common to all human beings wherever they are. 3. Movement of knowledge plays an important role. 4. Experience, knowledge, memory, thought and action. This is the movement of life. 5. Thought thinking is a materialist process and thought is matter. Nothing sacred about thought 6. Perception, sensation, contact, thought creating image and desire. Process of desire. 7. Living in thought process is living in the past. Modified in to present projected into future. This process is the origin of fear. 8. Fear and consciousness is the common ground of all humanity. Content is the consciousness and it is common to all. 9. Analyzer is the analyzed. Observation is without division inwardly. Observer is the observed. Division is the trick played by the mind. 10. Thought being the result of past experience as knowledge creates time as past, present and future. This three state is the psychological time and is the origin of fear.

  • @Navenanthen

    9. "Observer is the observed." I'm not sure if I see this. Wouldn't that literally mean that if one is observing fear(the observed), then fear would be the observer? Please explain.

  • @jcab404

    @jcab404

    Not sure, but I think it means we can't observe our thoughts through thinking. There has to be a space for awareness in order for us to understand the whole action of thinking or thought.

  • @Navenanthen

    @Navenanthen

    7 жыл бұрын

    I agree; "we can't observe our thoughts through thinking" and that awareness is required to do so. But wouldn't that create division? The observer (awareness) is NOT the observed (thought).

  • @jcab404

    @jcab404

    7 жыл бұрын

    It's only division in the sense that whatever it is that can watch, attend to and/or understand is not the same thing as our thoughts. I interpret division in the ninth point to mean "disunity", "at odds with", or "in conflict with". That awareness we have might always be there, I'm not really sure, but usually we're wrapped up in, and pulled by, our thoughts, desires and emotions - or at least I am :).

    In Ojai, 4 years, for 2 weeks each of talks and met the man,as I walked a few steps in the same direction down the dirt road, he seemed fond of taking after talks with his few caretakers,I realised where I was and turned and there he was and he shook my hand as I offered it, and I gracefully let him pass. I had parked earlier near where his folks would bring him to the talks, not purposely, it was coincidental. Unlike other philosophers(though he refused to be labelled philosopher, Guru or teacher), JK is very particular and even overly cautious to guard against people drawing a methods out of what he says. Because, to him , when we practice a method drawn out by others it limits the possibility of knowing the truth for ourselves and freeing us from the problems of our life such as fear, sorrow etc.We may achieve what is projected by the methods but it is only a projection of thought and may be far from truth. That is why he is emphatic about examining the issues together. That is his methodology of helping us to be a light to ourselves . We feel that it comes out form his deep compassion for others. When he points out to us to see for ourselves how thought is limited as a response of memory and hence a purely material process, it gives clarity to us and help us to place thought where it is to function effectively and not use it in psychological field to solve psychological problems. He also clearly shows us how the normal feeling and sensation turn out as desire and cause problems when thought interferes. One has to familiarise himself with his way of presentation and method of pointing out and discussing together style by listening to the audios , videos, recorded version of discussions with scientists, psychologists etc and reading his books to have a grasp of what he has to pint out about various issues of life. He describes the same issues in different ways to help his listeners because of the complexity of the subject and the limitation of language to express such complex subjects clearly, using his own words “ the word is not the thing”

One can always go back to them after a day. But can you sacrifice 20 hours of your miserable insignificant life to put some order in your psychological house when the reward is total freedom? or just the thought of it scares you to death? it is your choice really; remember that choice implies confusion. there is no choice in seeking total freedom, only action, and seeing that the mind with its thought process is the obstacle to freedom and love, intelligence acts.

    Tu as entierement raison.

    you mean to say: the observer having the illusion to be separated from the observed is reinforcing duality, breeding eternal conflict where in reality there are the same thing, both a creation of thought. it is observing that fact without any movement of thought that liberates you from the cycle; being aware of the very movement of thought as soon as the sensation is perceived, which is to ask: can you perceive, can you have the sensation and not let thought take over? Just perceive, just observe, without prejudice, without desire of suppression or desire of transcending thought. just see for yourself the world of illusions created by thought, the images, the identities, the opinions....

    For a person to be simply aware (choicelessly aware) of every moment's happening in his mind, he has to first start practicing it daily for a short period of time, like 1 hour or 2 hours set aside exclusively for it. When you keep practicing it sincerely this way, then it gradually spills over to the rest of the day by itself. Then maintaining that constant awareness becomes effortless & you no longer have to do it by taking out separate time because that will have become your natural state all day.

    Profound indeed. I don't think however that krishnamurti is comfortable with such large gatherings. He clearly seeks some back and forth from the audience that is not really possible in such a large gathering.

    "Crisis is in the conscious" not somewhere out there with problems. "The brain that created the problem cannot solve the problem." Mankind has created enormous problems, in its disorderly way of living. then, can he solve the problem, any problem? What is the center piece of mankind? Ego in its sentiments? What has created my "disorderly way" of living? My confidence that I know everything about myself (is this the ego that I think I know?), when I know nothing of myself (other than my past knowledge about me) ... and confidently try to deal with the outer without knowing what inner is like. It is an obvious fact that I know nothing of myself, so I am still what I was yesterday, continuation of disorderly, not enlightened, not comfortable, not compassionate.... Today
