    Dilla's death is one of the most tragic in music in my opinion. He knew what was coming and he used what little time he had left to give us a true masterpiece, as a final goodbye gift.

    Here's an interpretation. The donuts represent J Dilla's musical offerings (which makes sense - the album is called donuts and last donut of the night is the last full track). Notice how the neon donut at the top of the store, the donut sign to the front, and the donut-looking sign to the left (visible starting at 0:24) look just like vinyl records. The donuts themselves are different but are all tasty. Here's the twist ...the cops represent J Dilla's fans (who would like nothing more than sit there and consume the donuts) and the thief, in black, represents his illness - went in and robbed from us all the tasty treats we could have enjoyed later - they are getting squashed and we will never get to taste them. Also notice how the store attendant who tries to beat the thief looks like a nurse. The reaction of the young cop is to try to stop it, but there's not a damn thing he can do about it. So all that's left is for us to sit there and gobble up this final, delicious donut, salvaged from the ground.

    When you know the context, it’s even sadder. I went into this album knowing Dilla made it while dying, and it made it all the more meaningful to listen to. It’s a man laying bare all he can, while he can, it’s human spirit at its finest.

    honestly if I had to give my opinion of what the video represents... the young cop represents dilla himself and the old cop represents us, the listeners. Dilla knows he's about to die, he's freaking out he's frantically working on this very album from his hospital bed he's trying to make the most out of the rest of his time on Earth. The old cop eating donut after donut shows that his music will never die, it will be consumed over and over and over again for years and years and years. He knew he would be remembered forever as a legend because he was confident in his body of work. Anyway, this video, song, and album are all straight up art man. Masterpieces. Peace to the god forreal

    Also the beginning of the vid when the young cop is smiling with the full plate is like early in Dillas career when he was working with Pharcyde and Tribe and slum village happy as hell to be doing what he loves and being respected by his peers. The guy sneaking in could be the first sign of sickness, maybe before Dilla was diagnosed when he knew something was wrong?

    This video makes me sad. My take on it is. It's the last "sweet" thing Dilla can give in life and receive. I heard donuts were his most favorite thing. And he wanted us to have it. The video symbolizes that we should enjoy it. Like the cop. Its the last thing he left us, to think he was on his death bed producing this gem for us. Rest in Beats Dilla god

  • @bottimind8726
    @bottimind87263 жыл бұрын

    The thief is the mainstream music industry. It tries to take the soul of music and selfishly make off in the night with it. During the fight, the sweetness is crushed by their dominant attempts to hold it all for themselves. Dilla is in the back of the shop cookin up recipes. The music turns up as soon as he opens the front door, bursting ambiently into this setting which is an unsuspecting stage for the most epic conflict ever witnessed at a donut shop. The baker is Dillas mom, protecting the beauty her boy brought to this world and the countless musicians Dilla sampled to make those donuts so damn delicious. She makes sure nothing leaves the store unless it is enjoyed and respected. She would have probably given him a donut for free if he just asked nicely, but the industry has never had manners. The young cop is us when we were young. Impressionable and confused about which side to choose: hero or villain, rap or hip hop, chaos or community, love or lust. Should we protect the music with our medal of honor, or know convictedly it is something which could never be taken from us in the first place, and maybe just let Ma Dukes and her broomstick handle it? In his struggle to choose, he misses his chance, and will forever be in limbo. The old cop is us now, lost in the flavor of the music, even with chaos all around us, we ignore it and dive in. Baby baby. What a sweet life.

    This is undoubtedly the best beat J Dilla has ever created, this beat is so pure. It's so amazing that it would lose it's value if anyone had to rap on it. It is like a well done wedding cake, you don't want to consume it, touch it etc.Truthfully Dilla was a genius at chopping up samples. This has to be one of the greatest beats of all time without a shadow of doubt.

    I love this song and video. J Dilla is amazing. Some people want to see it as a metaphor for addiction, personally I think its about being in the moment. Enjoying the atmosphere. J Dilla creates amazing atmospheres thru his music so the video mirrors this. The guy is on his coffee break enjoying donuts & divorced from the outside world. Its a human moment. All the problems continue, but to take a break and enjoy the good is important too. I also love the humor in the video. R.I.P Jay Dee. You're a ledgend up there with Coltrane in my book.

    alright, I'm not trying to get involved in another counterproductive youtube argument, but both of you have made some very valid statements, and the fact that two people can find ways to perceive music in two very different ways is a testament to just how great this music/artist/song is. I'm not saying i want you to argue, but alternate views of what one may consider truth is what has carried art and music for ages. this back and forth of conflicting opinions is no different. neither of you are wrong, you just have a different definition of what is "right".

    The Last donut is Dilla’s last record, his last chance to enjoy himself before the eternal night comes. The donut and the vinyl record, both of which are round in shape, and on a loop constantly until a bite is taken or the needle is lifted. Lastly, the donut and the vinyl can be compared to life itself, as all 3 are in some aspect a cycle, and all 3 are fragile goods. A bite is taken, the music stops, life ends.

    Stones Throw held a video contest for the track and this happened to be the winning video. You have to remember that this particular song was one of the lasts one that J. Dilla made, hence the title "LAST Donut of the Night". The directors & writers of the video portray these donuts as things of great value in the video, similar to a J. Dilla song. It all ties together. It's just genius.
