J Dilla Inspired Techniques 2

J Dilla Inspired Techniques
In this vid, we examine another technique from the legendary Jay Dilla where i'm imagining he flipped a single guitar/bass sample and mapped it enabling him to play across keys or pads. In addition this technique requires a simple 4/4 drum pattern. The simple rhythm gives so much room for elements therefore making it super funky!
Sample comes from this pack - www.howtomakeverysickbeats.co...
This is demonstrated on my midi keyboard while the drums are coming from the mpc 2000xl Once again this concept can be transferred to any hardware or software.
This is only one of many J Dilla techniques, but if you listen to his album called Welcome 2 Detroit, u will come across so many dope techniques just from that one album alone. The spirit of Dilla will continue to live on and shout out to Ma Dukes for creating such a legacy thru her son Dilla Dawg aka The King of Beats.

in the beginning i was like... nah, this guy is taking a very simple concept, and overthinking it way to much...i mean, who doesnt know about playing one single note up and down on a sampler? but tbh the end result blew my mind yo! really really dope! havent thought about actually using a sample containing more then one note in the sampler. combine that with the fact that you actually play a polyphonic melody, makes it sound even doper. i usually keep my sampled notes monophonic. but this is crazy!

I've literally never seen anyone do that before. People usually use the single note but wtf.
I love your way of thinking. "There's only one Dilla, but you can always use concept from guys". And to be honest, from now I've listened many "Dilla trying to be" beatmakers, and YOU are the one that got his spirit. Keep it, I'm jealous!

Kev Brown takes this 16 levels technique to the bank constantly. Just have to mention him, aside from Dilla I don't know who can kill it with this method like Kev .. Give him one bass note, one guitar note (not even a chord), and one piano key.. Guarantee he does something most beat makers will envy for a long time. Not to take away from anyone, it's just some insane talent.

Totally agree, I'll have to add Mr Porter, 9th Wonder and AraabMuzik to this list.
I really needed this video about 2 years ago lmao. Another similair trick is that if you have a one-note vocal chop, you can play chords and get a choir that sounds sampled. Great vid!

AAAHHH! Just what I have been looking for! You are many great things, musician, number one, teacher, number two, but most importantly, I feel like a friend is teaching me. You break things down to where I can pick up exactly what you're doing, and where you are going with it. I live in a small city, so I don't meet people who do what I wanna do. I'll keep watching, if you keep taping.
