J.Cole’s The Off-Season: First REACTION/ REVIEW

Музыка

J.Cole’s The Off-Season: First REACTION/ REVIEW. This is our first reaction and review of J.Cole’s new album The Off-Season. The tracklist includes 95. South, Amari, My Life ft. 21 Savage & Morray, Applying Pressure, Punchin The Clock, 100. Mil, Pride is the Devil ft. Lil Baby, Let Go My Hand, Interlude, The Climb Back, Close & Hunger On Hillside. This is J.Cole’s sixth studio album and his follow-up to 2018’s KOD. We got a crazy J.Cole Freestyle on The Los Angeles Leakers “Power 106” show and Applying Pressure: The Off-Season Documentary to kick off a great roll-out for this new album.
It will be interesting to see if J.Cole’s The Off-Season ends up being one of the best rap albums of 2021 and if it will lead to Cole taking control of the rap game. J.Cole’s retirement is looming and this will most likely be one of his last albums. This instant reaction/review of J.Cole’s new album The Off-Season takes you through the best performances on the album, the production choices, and our overall thoughts on the music. We also used our scorecard system to give visuals to our thoughts on the content, performances, features, production, instant replay value, and our overall rating of the album. THE GOATS WITH A REVIEW VIDEO... My opinions: I feel like most people didnt enjoy the new Cole album in thier first listen cause its differnt from his recent albums. KOD, 2014 FHD, FYEO, these albums all had a sequence to thier songs in some way, they all tell a story. The Off Season is not necessarily in a sequence or an order, its like what people said J Cole said it would be, Pure Bars just like the warm up. I love this album, new flow and styles that je absolutely destroyed, this man is a beast. This Album was fire no doubt about it, Worth the wait in my opinion, and the features definitely played thier part, props to Lil Baby and 21 my favorite features for killin thier features. Favorite track as of now is [ Pride.is.the.devil ]

Not gonna lie - After my first initial listen of the album, I was extremely disappointed and it wasn’t vibing with me for some reason. But once I listened a second time and then a third time, I was fucking heavy with it and still am. I think it threw me off how short the album was and also how this felt more like a B-project from Cole rather than a fully fledged project: this is Cole’s Untitled Unmastered in a sense. The production throughout the album is fantastic, Cole’s performance whether it be rapping or singing is fantastic, Features were good and it has very high replay value because how short and digestible it is. This feels like the perfect appetizer while we wait for a fully fleshed out project from Cole. It’s dope how far Cole has come as a producer and how he’s improved as a singer. This album surprisingly even has some experimental elements to it with certain songs. Great stuff from Cole

Typing this before I've even watched the video and heard your opinion. This album is what I've been waiting for to hear from Cole all these years! Him rapping his ass off over GREAT aggressive production, while still being introspective. He hasn't sounded this hungry in a while. The album has such a 90s/early 2000s vibe. "95 south" heavilly reminded me of Hov's "U Don't Know" and tracks like "punching the clock" of 90s Nas/Mobb Deep. And when Diddy came in on that outro to "let go my hand"...come on man, how could one not think of Biggie's classic albums? Two listens in and I already dare to say this is my favorite Cole album and my favorite overall project of his ever since "Friday Night Lights". I didn't even mind that he was using autotune on some of the tracks. Only thing I'm still waiting for is a feature by someone who's actually able to outrap him. I really wanna hear Cole go toe-to-toe with someone like Big K.R.I.T. on "The Fall-Off". But other than that "The Off-Season" is fucking amazing!

Also I agree on the opinion of “let go of my hand”. One of his most unique songs. Overall tho I just feel like cole lyrics are pretty surface level. YES he’s a good rapper but there really isn’t much to digest that doesn’t sway away from him saying he’s the best or him talking about some issues going on in the country(again at a surface level).
