The J20 is really made for long range anti air strikes against US assets like tankers, airborne radar command and control, and bombers. The urgent need for US point defence systems for their eastern Asia bases is a very interesting topic. I still think anchoring 4 of the soon to be decommissioned Ticonderoga class cruisers at Okinawa would be a great stop gap measure. 120 VLS tubes, with 4 ESSM missiles per tube, for 4 ships is almost 2000 missiles. That would be a hard nut for China to crack.

It will be a slow attrition mountainous warfare. Heavy assets like planes struggle to fly over them and are easily shot down if they try, helicopters can't fly over them. Tanks can go over them but will easily be ambushed from the terrain. Leaving artillery and infantry to do the majority of the work. An isolated conflict between the two great powers wouldn't amount to much. A full scale world war where the chinese attack bangladesh and push through burma to attack eastern India whilst pakistan attacks them in the west would be a more likely scenario of an upcoming war. @@awildpanther2031 again, an odd reasoning, J-20 is being built as we speak, the numbers will grow why does the number of fighters determine its role? so you're saying F-22 isn't an air superiority fighter because of the low numbers? and F-35 is? So you know exactly how much trust the J-20 has? So you've flown the J-20 and determined its maneuverability is "lack luster"? Even though the canard design is capable of high alpha maneuvers better than any? What makes you think the J-20 has limited data link abilities? when the PLA pilots themselves said the J-20 is a data node in a network-centric system of systems. So F-22 and F-35 are canard delta designs? if not, then in what ways are J-20s related to those American fighters? If you're trying to claim that Chinese scientists do not understand stealth, then that's a laughable and even borderline racist assertion. the concept of stealth isn't hard, it's the engineering, ie making a stealth plane fly, and that cannot be stolen, it has to be done step by step and trial and errors. The erroneous and often overused "China copies" is frankly childish to begin with. Also, do you even understand what Air Superiority means? It means to take control of the air space over the battlefield, it doesn't matter how you achieve it, as long as you can deny your enemy's ability to conduct air operations, by either destroying enemy fighters or destroying their entire networked air assets and force multipliers, as long as certain fighter is capable of that, then you are an air superiority fighter. BTW, do you even know what the capabilities in high off-boresight and LOAL capabilities means for WVR fights? because you don't seem to even understand the implications of it.

A few observations no one will actually read from a former Patriot ADAFCO and current intel analyst focused mainly on the PLA: 1) The main role of Patriot on Kadena (and everywhere, really) is missile defense. In any shooting war, there will be huge numbers of fixed-wing aircraft and surface combatants in the region, both of whom take a higher priority for fixed-wing targets. Patriots are best conserved for what will likely be an absolutely massive barrage of MRBMs. 2) The main role of the J-20 in current PLAAF architecture is as a long-range interceptor and local air superiority aircraft, not a strike fighter. A saturation attack like what you describe is going to likely consist of a mix of H-6s, Su-27 knockoffs, and JH-7s, leaving the J-20s to try and contest critical airspace and/or hunt high-value strike aircraft or other high-value aerial targets. 3) Patriot (and every other modern heavy SAM system) has no trouble engaging the Kh-31P, or really, any non-LO anti-radiation munition. Same for any glide bomb munition. Their primary utility nowadays is depleting enemy interceptors -- which is a very useful thing, to be fair. 4) Any LO aircraft carrying stores externally is no longer LO. The incredible investment in a 5G strike aircraft makes no sense if you’re just going to strap a couple of telephone-pole sized missiles on the wings and then send it into the teeth of enemy IADS. 5) To #4, any ostensibly LO aircraft carrying an external load is going to be detectable by Patriot (and every other modern search radar on the planet) at or close to their max range. 6) SAM operators - especially US or US allies operating Patriot - are not “blind” when their organic radar is not active. They can receive track data from a variety of sources - mainly Link-16, and can even engage datalink targets (called “low-bright” targets in the Patriot world) under certain circumstances. That said, obviously, you want your radar active if possible. 7) The US has invested a stupendous amount of money in its land-based missile systems - over $20 billion in FY21. Much of this went to THAAD and Patriot, for both modernization and procurement. Granted, much of this is focused on missile and long-range air defense (as it should be), but the Army’s eyes are finally open as to the huge gap in short-range, low-altitude systems. They’re kind of outside the scope of this discussion though. 8) Patriot in particular is very much a Ship of Theseus weapon system. There are literally no common components left between Patriot that fought in the Gulf War and modern Patriot. It is also probably important to note it is about to get its biggest upgrade ever - a new radar (or really, set of radars) that FINALLY offers 360 degree coverage as well as an actively-scanned main array.

America has REPEATEDLY stated VERY CLEARLY, that they will "HELP, Taiwan to have the ability to DEFEND ITSELF" It's also written in the Taiwan relations act. the US has NEVER said they will defend taiwan themselves. It means they will sell them weapons and possibly provide them with intelligence when war starts. Poland on the other hand is a NATO member, Article 5 of NATO states, attack on one is an attack on all. So it's pretty clear which side the US will get involved with directly.

Very very unlikely that the J-20 will run into a Patriot SAM. The J-20 is designed as an interceptor to stay in the "fuzzy" range of AWACS in order to destroy high value aircraft logistical assets such as AWACS and aerial refueling tankers. The J-20 doesn't even have an internal gun. It's not designed to tangle with F-22s or F-35s in medium & short range engagements. It's not designed to be a ground attack fighter-bomber either.

How’s the SM-2IIIC compare? A discussion like this is overly constrained and misses out on the nuance of modern air defense. Also, the FAS article on the topic is much more extensive.

Well, that's assuming J-20 is an actual 5th gen stealth fighter. It LOOKS stealthy-ish from outside, but the canards and ungine exhausts are not particularly stealthy and we know nothing about the internal structures. It's easy to make a cool looking airplane but based on some Indian news (J20 detected by Indian flankers), it's no F-22...

J-20's canards are aligned with other control surfaces, such as the wings, and the top edge of the air intake, so for all intents and purposes, J-20 has stealthily designed canards. Which means when not moving, it DOES NOT present any new angles of reflection for enemy radars. And when they are moving, from the videos I've seen J-20, the angle is tiny. Which MIGHT only present a momentary blip, milliseconds, nowhere near enough to get a lock on target. People also need to understand, even the F-22 is very much detectable from long range by low frequency early warning radars, so the idea of stealth fighters that can't be seen is very much exaggerated, it's rather that Stealth fighters PREVENTS the enemy to get an effective lock on target. Because the stealthy features are much more effective against higher frequency targeting radars. In that case, no aircraft is really stealthy. And due to the fact that you cannot create or destroy energy, the radar waves, which are a form of energy, cannot simply be "absorbed" by the stealthy aircraft, it has to be redirected. Which means, any stealthy aircraft, are very detectable from certain angles. So canards doesn't really do much in terms of stealth other than having a different set of more detectable angles. Stealth fighter pilots are very aware of these more detectable angles, and will try to point the least observable angle of the fighter towards the possible direction of the enemy

In order to score a hit, they would need to fires hundreds, so they would need dozens and dozens of planes, all focused on firing anti-ship missiles. And if they want those planes to survive, they will then need dozens and dozens of air superiority fighters. They will need to somehow fly in undetected, which will be impossible because of the AWCS that will be patrolling. So you're really not thinking this through at all.

1:07 THAAD There also aren't enough J20's to pull off a meaningful saturation attack as you describe. Also why risk J20 when you can use hypersonics against static targets? Why would Patriot or THAAD be engaging J20 when there are air platforms that could do that? You attribute the development of domestic systems by allied nations to the failings of Patriot without evidence.

I think what China did with the j-20 is make an aircraft which is stealthy enough but cannot compare with an f-35 in a aspect of stealth, shown by the canards. The thing China has done is created an aircraft which is stealthy enough that in a war when there's thousands of sorties going on the US's radars wouldn't be able to sport it.

  • @EPsuperFan

I think you are right. Strategically we have to realize that the only battle scenario that China really wants to pick a fight on is Taiwan and Taiwan only. If the US doesn't intervene or do it quickly enough then China basically will only focus on taking the island (which is very, very close to China in naval and aviation warfare terms) and then defence of an extended coastline. That's why China has invested heavily in fortifying its coastline against potential US naval and aviation strikes first before going for a bluewater navy. With China's landmass, natural resources and a secure hinterland (on the pretext of a neutral to friendly Russia), it has zero reason to stumble into a pan Pacific War like Japan did back in WWII - even Okinawa would be a stretch if the US only use it as a logistical base to avoid pulling Japan into the war. With this background in mind, J-20's design actually makes a lot of sense.

The US must adress their ground based Air defence (wich is kind of strange since they have decent SEA based systems?) wile china has a need for fire and forgent missles smaller than cruise missles.
