‘Knees’ is the 6th track in IU’s fourth extended play album ‘Chat-Shire’. Both written and composed by IU, the song is a simple, straightforward ballad with classical piano accompaniment that’s intended to make the listener fall asleep. About 10 months prior to the official release, IU actually uploaded the song as a gift to her fans so they can listen to it for free. As if to thank the fans for her win at the 2014 Mnet Asian Music Awards, IU said on Twitter: “I’m happy. Thank you for everything. This is for you.” When asked about ‘Knees’, the singer-composer said that during the time she was writing the song, she wasn’t eating and sleeping properly. IU confessed that it’s a song that she wrote on a night when she couldn’t sleep because she was feeling angry and sad. “I thought to myself, ‘under what circumstances would I be able to sleep well?’ The thought came to me that I would be able to sleep well if I could just lie on that knee. IU said that the most difficult song to record among her songs was "Knees." It wasn't because of the technique, but because it was emotionally difficult. It's a song with a backstory that it was very difficult to find a middle ground between being too emotional and too bland.

Knees.. was written when IU couldn't sleep and missed her grandmother's lap where she could sleep soundly when she was little

Knees is like top 5 all time favorite iu songs for me, it’s a great example of iu at her best as a lyricist and composer..fitting since the chatshire album is her first self written &self produced album

The pianist is named Jehwei. He's also a composer and (left handed) guitarist. He's been with IU a long time, you can spot him in a lot of MVs. In those 'Love Wins All' and 'Holssi' behind-the-scenes videos he's the guy giving IU instructions during the sessions.

It's not Jehwi in Love wins all and Holssi recording behind. That's Lee Jonghoon, her long-time partner, he was in the interview in IU's documentary. Jehwi is also one of the composers she works with since 2015 I think and also the musical director for IU's Palette. He's a great singer too, Dear Moon from IU's drama My Mister.

It's indeed a very special playlist song. Knees is beyond the word beautiful. I'm glad you liked it. This song she wrote for her grandmother as she is raised by her grandma (couldn't live with her family in childhood due to financial problems). Every word of this song is a feeling.

IU is one of the few artists who can "stand & deliver" singing - who can mesmerize you with her beautiful singing & arresting beauty & expressions. Your whole being is being drawn to her. You should react to By the Stream, a remake song from her Flower Bookmark series. The live performance has IU singing accompanied by pianist Jung Jaeil (renowned composer who did the soundtracks for the award winning movie Parasite & also Broker which IU starred in) & interspersed by the cello. IU said that was one of her best vocal performances.

'Knees' is one of the songs IU said she wants to be remembered for. The other two being 'Heart' and 'Through the Night'.

"Knees" is one of the best songs of IU that really comforts me. And number 1 song of her that I really really love. I remember it was my 2nd song of IU that I watched when I'm starting to know her last 2019 after finding out Jang man Wol is a singer. So the 1st song was Through the night then when I looked for another song I was intrigued by the title knees. So I played the video u watched. At first line I laugh coz how did she know I'm the only one awake that time. But then as the song continues. I'm starting to get emo 😢 and the only one I think while reading the lines was my late mother (it's been 1 year since she passed when I watched this vid. So it's still fresh for me) and I also have that kind of childhood memories sleeping on my mother's lap. So I just cried while listening and reading the subs 😭. I'm not prepared for this. why IU? why you make me cry? I miss my mama after watching that vid and everytime I hear the song it really gives me comfort. But when I read the subs it always makes me cry. That song always reminds me of my mother Then I went to her concert last June 1 and knees was my ultimate wish to hear it live and hope that she'll sing in en-encore but I got sad coz she didn't choose knees 😢. And always get jealous of other countries where she sang knees ☹️

I already wrote this, but you need to see more personality video or context video. Ofc live and MV are great, but really, her charm is much more than live and song... If you dont like analyzing the depth of lyrics, you should see more personality video, for example iu's palette, behind the scene, or iu's homebody signal videos ...
