I love the refits. Many don't realize that it allowed Italy to modernize their battleship fleet with basically new ships without breaking the treaty.

Excellent! This is what is needed. The military efforts and developments of Italy during and preceeding world war two deserves to be more known.

Superb documentary yet again! It really brings home the superiority and more considered approach of the Regia Marina in developing a well balanced fleet than the more reactionary approach seemingly taken by the Marine Nationale.

Excellent video, love to hear about the Italian Navy, as a Croat there isn't much content about Yugoslav or NDH navies from this period so this is the closest thing for me. If I could give one simple recommendation, it would be to increase the volume of your voice to make it more clear and better sounding. I have my volume on max on my phone to be able to hear what you're saying. Looking forward to more content.

Giulio, Excellent presentation. You have managed to give a lot of facts in a short time. The building of the Regia Marina in the 1920’s and 1930’s is interesting and somewhat puzzling in relation to the some of the ships built! I look forward to your next presentation! Regards, Bob.

despite how much i love Dorias (as internationally known Duilios), they were not a good move. Adding 2 extra inferior battleships (if compared to Royal Navy's 15' Superdreadgnouths) didn't change a bit the balance of power in mediterranean waters during ww2, while keeping the unmodernized obsolete ships would have still gave Italy the chance of using them to escort convoys and train fresh crews, or be deployed as shore bombardment 'expendable' ships. It would have been much better to have Littorio and Vittorio Veneto completed and Roma in a much faster construction phase. I'd rather take 2 modernized Cavour + 2 unmodernized Dorias + 2 Littorios (+1 about to be delivered) with less budget envolved and more chances of maybe a CV under construction (Roma Liner was already planned to become Aquila) than the historical lineup in which the 6 Italian battleships consisted of a 2 modern and 4 inferior ship's force. BUT we are talking with the day's after news... How could Italy know by 1938 that France would last 3 weeks against a major German offensive? how could they know that USA was to enter war with Japan, if Japan was looking for Chinese/Soviet resources and was maybe looking for British and Dutch raw materials... the extremely budget and resource limited Italian Navy aimed for a fast and possible solution to improve their chances against a rival (France) who had more Battleships and was on pair in terms of new ships... So i can see why they did took that route of rebuilding Dorias, despite not being the best decisition of all time

It is curious that nations which had adopted the metric system, still manufactured naval guns or other cannon, whose diameter had clean equivalents in the old measuring system: 203mm = 8 inches, 381mm = 15 inches, 76.2mm = 3 inches, and so on. Was this because the machine tools used to manufacture the weapons was built to the old measuring system, rather than metric?

Seems like the Battleship Holiday put Italy at some disadvantage, since her fleet did not have a great number, like those of UK and US.

I disagree. Starting from the fact that Italy could not compete with the USA and UK, the vacancy allowed the country to build its cruiser fleet while in the 1930s they could concentrate battleships
