'Putin is scared' as Kremlin continues crackdown while losses increase in Ukraine | Bill Browder

"Yulia Navalnaya is now leading the opposition. Putin is scared of any type of opposition, and she's got a very powerful case. She is a, an aggrieved widow, who, wants justice."
Russia is continuing to crack down on internal opposition to the backdrop of Putin's failure to make gains in Ukraine, Bill Browder tells Kate Gerbeau on Frontline.

Even if Ukraine loses tomorrow Russia can't "win". They needed to take all of Ukraine with minimal losses back in 2022 and they failed. Putin is just pushing a death spiral for Russia at this point. Russia has already lost, whether or not Ukraine loses as well. They should have pulled out in 2022 when they failed to take Kyiv. It was at that point they lost the war. There's no win for Russia. That opportunity has evaporated.

The frustrating aspect of this dreadful episode is that Putin regards the West as a bunch of wimps. And as every day goes by that he is not knocked out of the ring, he chuckles and carries on. Why is the world so scared of this cheapskate gangster? Bill keeps underlining this simple fact.

  • @danielcamacho1913

The cheapskate gangster keeps mentioning his nuclear arsenal. If 95% of their warheads are duds, the other 5% can still end agriculture and then civilization. So, we'd like to be a lot more certain that he won't use them. Considering all the other signs of his immense ego and paranoia... Putin would like to reunite the Soviet Union and make them the dominant world power but, if he can't do that, he might think the distinction of being _the man who ended the world_ is an acceptable alternative.

You're absolutely right. Putin must see most of the Western leaders as being weak and indecisive. It's incredible how much mileage he's been able to get out of making nuclear threats. Every time there's talk of increasing the level of support to Ukraine he plays that card..and for the most part our leaders have fallen for it over and over again, if not completely going back on new proposals to increase support to Ukraine, they'll often water them down. For Putin, that counts as a win and it didn't cost him a penny.

A court in Moscow has issued an arrest warrant for the widow of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny on charges of extremism, according to state media. The charges brought against Yulia Navalnaya, who lives outside Russia, in absentia are to do with her alleged "participation in an extremist society", Tass news agency said. Navalny was Russia's most significant opposition leader of the past decade. He died in February in an Arctic Circle jail. Russian authorities said he died of natural causes - but his widow said Navalny had been "tortured, starved, cut off and killed" by Russia's president Vladimir Putin. Navalny had been serving 19 years on extremism charges that were widely seen as politically motivated. Responding to the arrest warrant against her, Yulia Navalnaya posted on X: "When you write about this, please do not forget to write the main thing: Vladimir Putin is a murderer and a war criminal. "His place is in prison, and not somewhere in The Hague, in a cosy cell with a TV, but in Russia - in the same colony and the same two-by-three-meter cell in which he killed Alexei."

I have a sneaky feeling even with half a brain Biden is going to beat Trump like a drum in November. There's been massive changing of U.S demographics and voter patterns from pre-covid era. Trump lost by a huge margin last time round and those voters are not going to suddenly switch their votes this time round. Plus it's economics that wins U.S elections. Not soundbites or debates and the U.S economy is booming right now.

There is no civil structure in Russia to facilitate a transfer of power. Just various armed factions - hard to see how any transfer happens without a civil war. The only question is how extensive - some blood on the streets of Moscow or armed groups forming and converging on Moscow for an all together more comprehensive fight. Will the commanders on the front return home with an overwhelming force to crush the FSB in the way the Red Army removed Beria, stay in place and watch or end up as just another set of gangs fighting among themselves.
