in america we also eat “cake” for breakfast but we call it bread. like banana bread or pumpkin bread or zucchini bread. they are bread with sugar which is basically cake but you would eat these as a breakfast food and not as a celebration cake.

Interesting video! I just spent a few days in Rome. When i went out to find a bar to have breakfast in the tourist areas all I could find was croissants/pastries plus coffee. After about a couple of hours I had run out of energy because I was basically having a sugar breakfast. I ended up having Alpen for breakfast instead. I love all the other types of Italian food though!!

When I stayed with friends outside Milan, they served the breakfast you described. They had cereal over yoghurt, so we all had some protein. Here in the U.S., cereal or toast with butter and jelly is very popular. My husband will often make me an egg over fried cheese, now that we are retired and he has more time. Always though, coffee is first for me and tea for my husband. Then we think about food! First the caffeine. My husband worked for two years in Turin. He refuses to go to any Italian restaurants in the states, because he learned to cook Italian meals from our friends. We were very spoiled by food in Italy.

I'm surprised you didn't venture south of Rome, cause if you did you would have mentioned GRANITA. Originally from Sicily, granita is a semi-frozen treat made from sugar, water and various flavorings: Lemon, Strawberry, Peach, Chocolate, and others. My favorite is Granita a Caffe con Panna with a Brioche, that's espresso flavored ice with a dollope of whipped heavy cream and a sweet eggey buttery roll on the side. Pulling off that top "button" of the brioche and dipping & scooping is the only way to start your day.

I was born in the US but my parents are from Rome, and I grew up eating biscotti with milk for breakfast. It was normal for me and I never found it strange, even if others do. When visiting family my favorites were pan di stelle and Bucaneve, which were impossible to find in the US till recently. Now I can get the former in stores and the latter online and that is my breakfast! I also like to bake ciambelle and eat that at breakfast, too, simple as you said. But now that I'm older I have my breakfast with cappuccinos instead of milk. I do also like a savory American breakfast like eggs, bacon, and potatoes, but I rarely have the time to make it.

That's why I seldom have breakfast when I'm home, in Italy. In the morning in Italy you can only find sweet things, which I don't like, so I have a coffee (or 2, or 3...) and that's it. When I'm abroad I find a better selection of breakfast foods, sweet OR savoury, and I always find something I like.

Many people say that when they visit both Italy and Germany that they feel like they are in multiple countries. Germany is much different within each area and Italy is as well from what I am told. Diets vary widely from what I am told and therefore physical appearances like height varies from what I am told as well. Many felt that the Germans in their southern provinces and the Italians in their southern provinces are shorter then most Europeans with most men around 5'8" to 5'9" while the Germans in their northern provinces are very tall like 6'0" to 6'1" on average and most Italian men in their northern provinces are 5'11" to 6'0". Well it did take both Italy and Germany to be unified countries because they both had a lot of independence states up until the later 19th century. Religious beliefs vary widely in these different provinces of Germany and political beliefs and lifestyle varies widely from one area to another in Germany. Italy is predominantly Catholic but politically they are more conservative in some areas and more liberal in other areas with many other differences as well.

I'm an italian bartender, and I don't want to be rude, but that's not a cappuccino, that's a caffelatte: an espresso with a cup of milk (by the way, be kind and have your meals VEGAN). It can be warm of cold, it depends (if it's winter it will be warm most of the times). Also at a bar you can have a latte macchiato (witch is a big mug of lightly frothed milk with just a little less coffee than a caffelatte) or a real cappuccino (which HAS TO HAVE foam on top, if not it's a caffelatte, and if you want to, you can add cocoa powder or cinnamon) and so on. Also, coffe options: espresso, espresso macchiato (caldo or freddo, warm or cold -this is referred to the milk, if you want it warm or cold in your coffe-), espresso schiumato (espresso with some milk foam on top, but not a drop of milk in the coffee), marocchino (coffee, cocoa powder, milk foam and more cocoa). I just wanted to make it clear that that's not a cappuccino and in a bar you can have many many options, not only cappuccino! (Remember: choose plant based milk, 'cause you're not a baby cow! ) Kudos!

I am first Generation American. My parents immigrated to the US from Latina Italy in the mid 1950’s. I’ll be frank with everyone. Italians consider cappuccino and a cigarette their main breakfast food with a little bit of Nutella and a croissant if you are lucky ! Italians don’t do breakfast or don’t do it well at all.

I’m second generation American. Both sets of my grandparents come from Bari. Here in NYC, we Italian Americans rely on the Jews for breakfast. They perfected it a long time ago. We cater every other meal though 😂

as a 16 years old italian boy, here is my breakfast: chocolate pastry (cake or yummy cookie) with too much nutella on it, and milk cup. but i only eat a small piece not like too big cake slice. like a ciao milk with nutella or piece of maxiciok with nutella. 😍
