Dear Manu another great video I have been self teaching myself Italian for a year and a half and have more and more questioned the idea in the last six months that would it be best to learn how language works before learning a language. And the great way you explain things makes me think this even more. Because until about six months ago I didn't realise how much you need to know about what was taught to you at school or even since you learned to talk in your early years. Maybe if I was taught by a teacher from day one it would have been different. I even had to look up what a adjective was in my first weeks the meaning of it. And it's much more complex at this stage in my opinion. Thanks so much for your fantastic content Manu best of luck

Excellent lesson. I understand auxiliary verbs so much better now. Yes, I originally learned essere in conjunctions with "verbs of motion" and honestly this makes much more sense. In this case my knowledge of Spanish helps a bit, too, as I get understand the reflexive aspect a bit better

I really appreciate these grammar explanations! I'm mostly learning Italian by semi-immersion but sometimes there are mysterious applications and MANU, you almost always solve the mysteries for me! Could you do a session on the many, many ways Italians use the verb FARE?

Dice Jadwiga: Finalmente ci sto prenderlo la mano. 19/20! Solo “Marco e Chiara hanno discusso tutto il tempo” è ancora un po’ di mistero. Ci sono molte somilanze tra la grammatica italiana e quella della mia madre lingua (polacca) ─ entrambe sono impossibili! Ma conoscere l’una mi aiuta con l’altra. Grazie Manu! Manu, can you do a video on the use of the auxilary verbs with the three modal verbs potere, volere, and dovere? I would especially like an example with a reflexive verb as the infinitive. Even more advanced students find those rules to be very confusing especially how the pronoun placement affects the choice of auxiliary. Advance students can benefit from a video which reminds them of the rules more than a grammar book would. Remembering the videos help people remember the rules.

I'm hoping someone might see this and help me out. I'm trying to use Mangiare in 3 tenses. Present, Passato Prossimo and Gerundio. The Essere and Avere can be tricky. I thought the gerundio used Stare as the helping verb. Present - io Mangio (i eat) Passato Prossimo - Ho Mangiato (I have eaten) Gerundio - Sto mangiando (I'm eating) I hope I haven't embarrassed myself lol.

Bravissimo! Perfetto anche il Gerundio. In effetti il Gerundio italiano ha funzionalità e costruzione diversa dalla "-ing form" inglese. "Stare + Gerundio" è la forma più simile al Present Continuous! 😊 👏

Dipende dalla frase! Spesso questa espressione introduce un periodo ipotetico: in quel caso può esserci il Congiuntivo, ma non sempre! Puoi trovare frasi come "Non so se SIA giusto" ma anche "Non so se sono bravo". 😊

Sorry sorry! My pronunciation is always a mix of British/Australia (stress on the I) and North American (stress on the A). At least in Italy we all stress the same syllable...we just pronounce the vowels differently between regions! Ah, the challenges of languages!!!!

Yes Manu we say ( we, they, you) dined in English, but if you're working class people would give you a strange look.

Yes; "dined" is more common in formal written language than in spoken language (at least for US English speakers).

Solo una piccola osservazione. Il soggetto della frase 13 è la concorrente e non Maria, come hai detto tu, e è per questo che il participio si accorge al femminile. In ogni caso non cambia niente, il risultato è lo stesso. 😉
