I do not understand why my Italian Teacher didn't tell us that months ago. But thank you, you just saved my test tomorrow!

I'm going to Italy next month and i'm trying to learn their language, the difference between auxiliary verbs 'essere' and 'avere' is one of the trickiest things i've seen in the italian language and your video has made me understand it very easily. My mother language is spanish, but i haven't found an explanation so clear in it in youtube or the internet, nobody explains to you what is an Intransitive verb and a Transitive verb. Thanks a lot man and keep on teaching!

Hi Manu! Thank you so much for explaining! I now have italian classes but most of the explanation is in Italian. English is also not my native language so you can imagine how difficult it is to really have a good focus and understanding of Italian grammar. Your youtube videos about passato prossimo and imperfetto helped tons! Thank you!!

Manu, that was an excellent explanation on transitive verbs = avere and intransitive for essere. I have to say I too had learnt that essere is to be used for movement verbs and found too many exceptions. Your explanation made sense. Grazie.

'They explain to you in Italian and that's why you don't get it' - This is 100% true, and I don't understand why teachers insist on teaching grammar in Italian. I get full immersion is useful, but 'immersion' for something as complex as Italian grammar makes no sense to me. Thank you!
Great! Huge help

Mi piace il trucco di cercare "essere" con il participio passato per vedere se diventa passiva in inglese (dimostrando che è transitiva) - che è incredibilmente utlile!

Grazie a te, Lou P!
The one test that I've used [in Spanish] to help me consider whether a verb is transitive or intransitive is switching the sentence from active voice (la voz activa) to passive voice (la voz pasiva). If you can take a verb and put it successfully in passive voice, then it's transitive--as transitive verbs require a direct object, and in passive voice, the direct object becomes the subject (the doer of the sentence): eg., Yo he leído un libro (I've read a book)/ el libro fue leído por mí (The book was read by me, TRANSITIVE). Ella ha corrido un maratón (She has run a marathon)/ El maratón fue corrido por ella (The marathon was run by her, TRANSITIVE). If you try to use an intransitive verb in passive voice, it won't work: eg., Ella fue al gimnasio anoche (she went to the gym last night)/ you can't use passive voice since there is no object with the Spanish verb ir (andare in Italian). Hopefully, this can help you Italian learners as well! I'm sure this test works just as well for Italian!

Gaia

Manu, what is the difference please between “Sono è piaciuta il film” and “Sono piaciuta il film”? [Since I am female, I used “piaciuta” instead of “piaciuto.”] Grazie!!
