It Works!! // The $127 Shimano GRX Mullet Upgrade

Ойын-сауық

No Goat Links, no Tanpans, no 3rd party mods. An all-Shimano solution to an affordable, reliable, 11 speed GRX mullet setup for up to 10-51t cassettes.
The GRX RX822 SGS 12 speed rear derailleur is compatible with GRX 11 speed shifters like GRX 600 and GRX 800. You install the RX 822 like any other derailleur, but max out the high limit screw, which limits it to 11 speeds. You will likely need a longer chain to go with your wide range cassette of choice. This video features an 11 speed Deore 11-51T MTB cassette.

This worked super well for me. GRX 11s shifters. Garbaruk 10-50 11s XD. Eagle XX1 12s chain. Shimano GRX 822 SGS 12s derailleur. Absolute Black 42t chainring. Shifts super well. Better than my Eagle MTB Garbaruk setups. Love this combination on my gravel bike. Caveat: check your B limit. I found that matching the line on the derailleur (meant for a 51t) to the 50t Garbaruk was spot on. The other thing. Use the Shimano recommended chain length (4-5 links+ quick link on big to big). I cut mine too short (2 links, vs the 4) and it skipped on the 10t cog while riding. With the right length it shifts better and no skipping.

I wanted to try this, but multiple mechanics told me it wouldn't work. In my mind, it made total sense, but they kept telling me that the grx 822 sgs pull ratio wouldn't allow it. Thanks for confirming my hackster suspicion.

You can swap the cage on a 11-Speed RX812 for the SGS-Version of the 11-Speed Deore XT one (M8000 Series). Inner and outer Cage plate should be about 15-20$ retail. And the shifting is crappy. However I tried another logic. Maybe it works on a 12s cassette. So I pulled out a microspline freehub, a 12s SLX cassette and chain from my MTB spares bin and installed them on my gravel. And it works perfectly, I can either use 10-45 range or 11-51. So if 11 speed GRX shifters in this video work with the new 12 speed GRX rear derailleur, the 10 speed GRX400 shifters should also work to shift the RX822 across 10 speeds and allow for the use of a wide range 10 speed cassette (eg Microshift 11-48). @@timothydoyle8269 The RD pull ratio would be the same whether 1-by or 2-by. The problem is how much chain slack the RD can absolve, that's the "Total Capacity" in the specifications. RD-RX822-SGS Total capacity is 41T (usually a few more still works), however your huge range 46/30 x 11-48 would need 46-30 + 48-11 = 16+37 = 53T That's a lot of chain to keep tight, I don't think the RD would be able to. In 1-by 48-11 = 37 With 2-by the official max would be 46/30x11-36 (46-30 + 36-11 = 16+25 = 41). Another commenter said 46/30x11-40 also works with GRX 11-speed.

I got the RX822 SGS and the M5100 11 speed cassette using a 11 speed chain with a Wolftooth Drop Stop chainring. I'm riding a Canyon Grizl 6 with a GRX 10-speed 2X setup but I really want to decrease my gear inches on the low end. The GRX-400 rear derailleur is paired to an 11-34 cassette and the front 2X chainring is an RX600 crank with 46-30T rings. I would love to get a larger cassette and/or smaller chainring to help with lowering my gear inches as I use the bike for touring and climbing with an added 50 pounds is really difficult at 25 gear-inches. As it stands now, the rear derailleur only supports up to a 36T cassette, which does almost nothing to lower the gear-inches, taking it from 25 to 23. The goal would be to get that to sub-20 but I am having a time finding drivetrain combos that would work. Any suggestions?

There actually should not be any need to swap out the front ring, as 9 to 12 speeds chains all have the same inner width of 2.18 mm (11/128″). Only the outer width is different for each chain type, and as it is a 1x setup, the outer width does not matter. Great video btw!

  • @MrKipperfish

    @MrKipperfish

    6 ай бұрын

@@TheBikeSauce The difference is clearly explained on the product page for every single wolftooth chainring that comes in a ST version. It's all about the extended inner plates, look at the diagram. The effective inner width is NOT the same as 11 speed when it comes to 1x. In the case of WolfTooth, running a 12 speed HG+ chain on a 1x ring made for 11 speed shimano chains will be louder and will wear the ring (and likely the chain, though chains are much harder than rings) faster due to the interference of the extended 12 speed HG+ plates with the wider wide teeth on the 11 speed ring. There's really no reason to run an HG+ chain in the setup detailed in the video. The only consideration would be for pulley wheel fit on the chain, but I doubt that will have an appreciable effect on shifting performance. Shimano has always had a rather loose fit of pulley teeth on the chain in the laterial dimension, and doesn't do narrow/wide pulleys. So as long as those 12 speed pulleys have teeth which are the same or very close width to 11 speed pulleys, shifting should be pretty much the same.

It had to be wound in a bit but only what seemed normal for setting up a derailleur. My results aren’t as good as yours. My shifters are a bit old and beat though. There seems to be a compromise between the derailleur shifting into the low gear easily but not shifting up to the last 3 high gears easily or not getting into the 51T at all and having good high end shifting. It’s probably a bit better than the performance with the tanpan and RD-M6100.

I had some trouble getting this to work, but the problem turned out to be chain length. On my 36t chainring, I needed to add two links to the chain to get the correct chain length. The standard Shimano XT chain is 116 links, which is ok for 34x51, but for 36t you need 118 links. When I finally found the dealers manual it says you might need to add up to 6 full links! So frustrating that the standard chain length is too short.

Rear derailleur GRX812 remained and it doesn`t work with 12sp shifters. 12sp shifters pull little bit more cable in 1 click. So if smallest sprocket works fine, - coming to the larger sprockets - chain starts to rub larger sprockets and needs to let loose the cable. After this - larger sprockets work fine but smaller work worse - needs to pull up the cable again.

In my case, there's a small amount of lateral cassette movement (within tolerance), and the rivets appear intact. I have the Gevenalle CX shifters on the way which are compatible with GRX but only up to 11 speed with the index (I could just switch it to friction so I have full 12x functionality if I really wanted to). I also know the GRX 11 speed derailleur is compatible with the SRAM 10-42. So my original plan was the GRX 11 speed derailleur with the SRAM 10-42. However I’m now thinking that I should instead get the GRX 12 speed due to it having a better cassette range and setting the limit screw initially so I can’t over shift. This way I have more cassette options in the 1x11 and even the ability to switch to 1x12 with the change to friction shifting if I wanted. I guess I’m just looking for the confirmation that this does in fact make sense due to the advantages of the GRX 12 speed over the 11 speed. Thanks for anyone who reads this and responds!

Is it necessary to change the cable, or could i just change the derrailleur and hook it up to the already routed cable? Cheers

I tried, but the gap between barrel and cable pinch bolt is longer on the RX822. If you happen to have a lot of extra cable hanging off your existing 812, it could work. I probably needed an extra inch of cable, so I just swapped inner cables.

What brand/make options are there for an aluminium alloy flat bar gravel bike with 12 speed GRX? What's the total cost for cassette + dereilleur + chain? Any place where you can trade in old parts?

Just run SLX/XT. The new GRX RD is pretty much a clone of the XT derailleur with a different pull ratio. Best setup for cost savings is running an SLX rear derailleur with an XT shifter.

A flat bar gravel is practically a rigid fork MTB, so you need an MTB groupset, like the XT.

Do you have the GRX812 RD? That officially works up to 42t and 46t is easy with B screw adjustment

I'm no expert, but having recently done the hack of swapping the shift ratio fin on my SRAM Force 1, 11-speed, rear derailleur (Mechanical), onto a SRAM X01 Eagle (12-speed), there was no need to limit the 12-speed rear derailleur into "thinking it's an 11-speed". The shifter is the brains, and determines how gears can be shifted, not the derailleur. Anyway, curious if anyone knows if this GRX RX822 SGS 12 is compatible in terms of pull ratio with Shimano (Dura-Ace, Ultra, 105 11-speed mechanical)? I was think of doing the Goat-link / Tanpan /XT 11-speed thing, but also curious if an XT 12-speed (52T) will work with just a Tanpan?

You’re right, setting the high limit screw is just a best practice to prevent chain from falling off in the absence of chain tension.

This is work to bring comfort when going uphill. It's the best solution than upgrading other parts, so don't worry and try it.
