It was all going so well...

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

We were having a great time on Ibiza, everything was going to plan... until our trusty Hyundai Santa Fe, the car that got us all the way here, carried all the luggage and the BSA Goldstar decided to start leaking coolant. I knew we couldn't drive the car in this condition, so the hunt for a mechanic began.

Yesterday I was sorting out my car insurance over the phone right before I watched this video. The agent was telling me that a bumper on a car these days could cost up to $5000. I assumed they were exaggerating, but seeing how your entire front end came off like that, I can believe it now! I hope the repairs have all worked out. 👍

Hi Mark, I think with the bumper comes fog lights (LED) front parking sensors and many parts of plastic that all fit together in an intricate way perhaps some even have a cooler/rad mounted down low for a turbo etc. I can see how it would add up.

Oh that’s unfortunate but good on you noticing the coolant leak before attempting to tow the trailer and breaking down on route to the ferry.could have been a lot worse.if left unresolved oil could have mixed with the oil and caused even more damage. Great biking weather my car is hooked up to a battery charger as soon as the sun comes out great excuse to ride my bike. Err towing the caravan at the weekend going to check all my under bonnet fluid levels dramas all this travelling but it’s all an adventure. Best regards Malcolm Melbourne Australia.

Thanks Malcolm for the comment. Yes in hindsight we could have probably played that game of topping it up with coolant as you went but if the leak got worse you might end up stranded. When you've got a Ferry to catch there's also the ticket cost that you'd forfeit if you broke down. They wouldn't wait 😂. Yes travelling does tend to throw up some dramas here and there but as you say it's all good fun 😊. Nothing that can't be mended and fixed and luckily nothing too difficult has come up so far! Have a nice time on the weekend with the caravan! Cheers, Sean

That is just unlucky to have happened while abroad but you got yourselves a mechanic at least, just hope the replacement radiator arrives in time. I seem to remember a new headlight unit will set you back £1k, modern cars are just a costly headache. Can we go back to the olden days, by which I mean the 1980's 😅

Hi Lee, a wing mirror on this is £800, very scary prices! I know this as Suzie clipped it and cracked the plastic, the plan is to have it plastic welded. I do actually have a 1986 BMW 325i that is off the road as bikes have taken my attention in recent years 😄. 1980s now that is a period for nice cars

It is not difficult to see the difference between oil and coolant. Coolant tast and smells sweet. Common problem those radiators, luckily no contamination ? You have to check that.

No contamination, I believe the compartments between the oil and coolant remain intact but the inlet/outlet for the coolant comes away from the alu over time. The suspicious among us would say they planned it like this 😂

it seems like the radiator or a hose leak . i would top it up from the cap on the radiator ,not the header bottle with plain water and run it up and look for the leak . if its still available rad weld from Halfords or their equivalent may stop the leak until you get home . good luck .
