They thought that since her tears where what caused them to be stuck in this predicament in the first place, it would get them back to their bodies. But of course it didn’t work, and thus Hakim has to step in and remind them the only way to get back to reality is to fix what’s broken, their relationship.

Also doesn't it say a lot about them that they don't even flinch at the idea of making their daughter cry, or like ever second guess themselves about the morality of things, not even a comment about how maybe what they're doing is wrong, whether it helps them or not. My point is, I don't care what they thought they're shitty parents for basically bullying their daughter to help themselves out of a situation they stuck themselves in in the first place.

The fact that in the credits, Cutie had been repaired implies that the toys don't really die, if she was actually alive. But that would mean that she spent hours without an leg and one of her ears torn off, and also got to hear the people who killed her celebrate and dance in the tears of the one person she loved dearly. this shit is fucked up

Honestly I think this scene is important as it shows how the May and Rose were looking at their own problems and being so wrapped up in how to solve them the easy way (divorcing, murdering Cutie to force tears from Rose) that they didn't see just how much they were hurting the poor girl, or look for other solutions that would require more effort.

As gruesome as this was, this scene was really important at showing they didn't understand how their actions affected their daughter. Going as far to make her cry without realizing the consequences. I was legitimately upset with the parents as I played through this section

The fact that the elephant was just trying to have a tea, to just escape; then to plead for her life and finally get ripped apart before falling to her death. Was just...to graphic that I would be surprised if someone doesn't feel horrible just to watch it.

Playing with my girlfriend, after both eating an edible, I literally broke down crying half way through. I had to pause the game because of how horrible I felt. Literally the only thing that pushed me to finish this part is the idea that the game would force me to start the whole scene over later, if I had just turned it off.

After this scene I failed to empathize with the two main characters for the rest of the game. I really never got over it and it honestly kind of ruined the rest of the story for me. I think that's just a testament to how well crafted this scene is.

I am not lying when I say I was full on SOBBING during this scene. I loved Cutie so much. She was one of my favorite characters. To hear her cry, and scream, and beg for her life just broke my heart. And to make it worse, Cutie was the one thing comforting Rose during all of this, yet the parents just killed her, watched their daughter cry, felt absolutely no remorse, and were angry instead of upset when they realized that their daughter's tears did nothing. This was one of the most gory and brutal scenes I've ever seen in a game, and there wasn't even any blood.

Cutie's death is gruesome, but i believe this all links to rose's psyche: her childlike innocence has beem stripped away from her directly by her parents actions. While they never fought in front of her, they still hurt her to a depressed degree: to a point where rose blames herself for her parents disagreements.

This is very creative in a way that yet, feels so dark. You don't need effects to make it horrific and tragic, just the emotion that is like jeepers crust.

“We’re stuck like this!” Good: i hope you stay that way FOREVER! It’s what you deserve!

The part that makes it disturbing is when may says “kill her” the music distorts And the closer you get to the edge the music distortion gets more intense

Cutie needs a damn hug. I absolutely hate that someone so sweet and undeserving of death, had to die a brutal, fruitless death. Nothing was gained here.

"Everything is fuzzy." That hit me. Poor thing doesn't know the feeling of dying because it never had to.

I was playing this because a friend invited me to play. I was slow to drag the elephant to the edge and I felt absolutely shitty doing everything to get to the edge. I felt sadness and hatred for the characters. When they felt no remorse after noticing the tears didn't break the curse, I quit. "These are shit parents and they are undeserving of anything good in their lives. Fuck this game." was my response before I left the Discord voice chat and went to bed absolutely angry.

So they murder a poor, innocent loving stuffed animal who was completely undeserving of such cruelty and then _happily_ bathe in the tears of the daughter whose heart they willingly break? If the game allowed it, I’d probably have these terrible excuses for parents thrown in a furnace instead.

The interesting thing about this scene, what makes this so disturbing, is the confrontation between the identity of the player characters (the parents) and the real point of view the game leads you to have: the childhood's vision of suffering. From the beggining of the game to this point, you try to immerse yourself as one of the parents. You get attached to the characters, with their personalities and flaws, and get involved into THEIR situation, THEIR relationship, THEIR marriage. Until that point in the game, Rose is not the subject of the story. She rather seems to be a TOOL they need to solve THEIR problems. At no point they really thought of Rose's suffering as if it was the cause of the problem they were trying to solve. There is a time for the characters to learn something. They are clearly not ready to understand how selfish they are at this point of the game. They have much more work to do on that! But there is also a time for the players to learn a message or a morale, and here, what we all learned is that the suffering of a child is not less important than anyone else's just because they are children. From their point of view, they could live irremediable experiences, as their innocence is constantly threatened of being butchered by the cruelty of life, especially if their parents aren't helping them but contributing to ruin their childhood. Cutie the Elephant was Rose's innocence. And her parents mercilessly killed it, believing it was "not that important", because obviously, their grown-up problems were "so much more important"! And just to make it clear, I am not defending the parents' actions! I almost cried playing this and am still in shock. Maybe I'm overanalyzing the scene, but it is my way to release the pressure. Overall, I believe this is brilliant writing. Risky and bold, but brilliant. The developers took the bet of giving us all trauma to make us feel what it is like for a child to suffer of being ripped of his innocence, and I believe it worked... Maybe too much!

My brother and I just played this part and couldn't stop freaking out! Half way through my brother said "WHERE'S THE BOOK!?!? WHY ISN'T HE STOPPING US!?!? WHAT THE FU-" and you know the rest. We just thought it would be a shove off the top and it would shift to Rose's perspective as she hit the ground but NOOOOOOOO AMPUTATION AND THEN YOU SHOVE HER OFF WITH YOUR FOOT!!!

@@voidwalker5784 Background music was even more unsettling than anything else. U can hear the childhood being stripped away in it. And I absolutely HATE the book even more now, he could've done something.

I sobbed for a whole hour after playing this scene. And it got worse after finding out they didnt even have to kill her

I feel so sorry for that poor elephant... :( I really do.

I just played this section of the game and I cried the entire time. Im a stuffed animal lover, Cutie just hit home for me because shes the kind of toy I would have definitely loved to have as a child :(

I think alot of people are missing the point of this scene. Yes what they did was wrong and THAT'S THE POINT. Hakim has stated many many times, the only way to turn back is to rekindle their relationship, not once did he ever hint that cutie was the solution. The fact that Cody and May refuse to take his advice shows how stubborn they are at first and how they slowly start to understand Hakim's actions.

Love how even after they see it didn’t work They are like “meh” You just tortured someone and make them plead for mercy and bathed on the tears of you crying daughter The fuk Sorry but at that moment I wish I didn’t played those characters

@PRchris13 They were forced to become clay figures by a book some guy wrote & there kid has no one to look after her when they were clay. Plus none of the stuffed animals are alive, the book was just using magic.

@@kijanajenkins2546 a parent cares for their kid Yes they became toys and are forced to find a way out But that doesn’t justify that they should abandon the idea of caring for their child or if the child gets hurt (mentally, emotional or physically) irl they shouldn’t care Like they broke the favorite toy of the daughter and it made her cry It failed and yes it was a bad thing it didn’t worked But damn they didn’t even showed a emotion of “oh shit we forced our innocent daughter to cry out of sadness and she is all alone now without nobody to support her” Like I would also get wha you say if they weren’t alone or didn’t involved their daughter But they did involve her and after what they did to her they hardly cared Like at this point they could hurt her and I bet they would be like “god damn it we didn’t turn normal”

@@theotheseaeagle Agreed, watching her get slowly eviscerated was heartbreaking to watch. But at least she’s alive, likely still in pain, but alive. She’s with Rose, so she’ll be loved till Rose gets older and matures away from her toys.

It seems there should have been some dedicated cutscenes and/or gameplay to make up for this one: 1. Parents realizing they're being awful selfish people at their daughter's expense 2. Parents redeeming themselves through several acts of kindness and selflessness 3. Repair the elephant, and profusely apologize to Rose while starting to fix the damage they've inflicted on her. Through proper parenting and therapy.

I cried my eyes out while I watched my boyfriend play this part, she was just wanting to be friends and play but instead they did all this to her, I understand they were trying to break the spell but to see cutie call for rose and to seeing her cry and be torn a part broke my heart.

When she said everything is fuzzy my heart dropped 😩😭

It's crazy how Josef Fares can deliver dramatic and provocative moments like these with just some dolls and child-like worlds better than AAA games who try so hard to do the same but fall flat, an example recently would be Outriders, which took itself so seriously but had me laughing at how absurd and poorly written it all was.

I think what is more messed up about this is that the parents broke their promise to the astronaut monkey and made the daughter cry

I think this whole scene with Queen Cutie tells how parents think that one solution would fix their problems w/ their children, only to make the situation even worse. This is especially true since Dr. Hakim (the book) tried to coerce the two to make Rose cry by killing Queen Cutie. Not thinking of any other way of making Rose cry, they just went with Dr. Hakim's suggestion because it was EASIER for the weight of responsibility to fall on Dr. Hakim and take less blame themselves.

He didn't encourage them, they only thought up the tear idea themselves, but I think he only allowed it to show that their problems can't be resolved that simply. Its the harshest lesson for them to learn. Like you said. The book is a real bro, and I'm disappointed people thought he was annoying when he was just doing his job honestly

i felt so bad. me and my sister almost cried, we felt genuinely so bad. she didnt even call guards or anything. i feel so bad- thank god she got fixed.. but its depressing. especially how rose reacted.

when me and my sister played this game at this scene my sister cried! it was legit just pure sadness and we told her she got fixed and she still kept crying

This is literally the most horrific thing I’ve ever done in a video game, far surpassing the GTAV torture scene and the No Russian level of MW2. To force the players to enact this torture to a sweet helpless character as they literally beg you to stop is the most vile and traumatic experience I’ve ever faced in a video game. Playing with my girlfriend, we have refused to play the game further, simply because the characters have quickly become the most unlikable characters I’ve ever been forced to play as. Not only did they torture murder a helpless elephant as she begged them to stop, all in an effort to make their daughter cry, but they then feel no remorse for making their daughter cry and instead LITERALLY. DANCE. IN. HER. TEARS.

Breaks a part of the former child of me. I have a Teddy Bear that i got on the day of my birth, some 30+ years ago. I know very well how important it was to me as a child and it frankly still is. The thought of it coming alive and being murdered just turns my stomach. It´s like innocence and love incarnate got curb stomped.

She was singing softly and being cute when they came in

This scene had no gore, no creepy atmosphere but it already makes my day really uncomfortable. ps Cutie is the best elephant doll

So May and Cody entered Cutie's castle to asassinate her.

The end is disgusting, this pair of fools don’t deserve no marriage and no family, they deserve to have their ears and legs torn off

What makes me upset is that they barely even thought twice about killing Cutie. In the process of literally trying to murder her, they say they feel bad and will need therapy and whatnot, yet they never hesitate or stop. They were only sad when they realized that the tears didn't turn them back to normal, and not about torturing and murdering a cute lil elephant. Or the fact that they made their daughter cry for no reason, and that they were joyful when she did. The game just kinda makes the characters go "well, shit. That didn't work" and never truly reflect on the severity and horror of what they just did. They just brought out the funny-looking book guy and said "oh well time to move on to the next puzzle." Knowing this happens has been one of the biggest turn-offs I've ever had towards a video game. I will *never* touch this game, nor will I watch anyone play it.

I thought that at least I wouldn't die in vain ... but seeing that Rose's tears didn't break the spell and that we killed cutie for nothing ... made my sister and I feel like cruel monsters. :(

I have seen many things in this cursed realm called the internet but rarely has something torn my soul to pieces like watching this.

This was just terrible. I could not believe that they would do it. Now I have a deep feeling of guilt for this. Just curious on who wrote this part of scenario.

because the people who are behind the creation of this game have certain goals and one of them is to kill humanity and simply everything good in people and also make them suffer. This is possible if a person again and again does something that his conscience makes him suffer because of the actions he has committed (as for example in this scene). Thus, each time the figurative heart or conscience becomes coarser and over time a person stops feeling (I think now it has become more clear why some call themselves Dead Inside because they stop feeling anything, in other words they become depressed) and also perceive cruelty as such and in to please his own desires, he is ready to do the most cruel acts that he could not even imagine. That's why almost all of today's entertainment contains the "poison" of violence and cruelty everywhere you look. But the good news is that anyone can recover.

This made me feel like more of a monster than any scene in either Last of Us game

I legit teard up of how cutie was killed like that Jesus Christ i didn't know i could cry for a fictional cute elephant but here we are...

You know, it’s funny how happy the parents were to shower in the tears of her own daughter! YOUR OWN DAUGHTER!!!!!!!!
