We used to own a house in Andalucia and reliable plants were lavender grosso, oleander, plumbago, bougainvillea, cistus and echium. Cistus, broom and rosemary grew wild on the hillsides and oleander grow in every spot where water appears sporadically and is used in the verge in the middle of motorways. We had a lawn with Mediterranean grass which grows by runners and doesn't need a lot of watering or mowing.

Ivy (hedra) is very invasive! It will suck every bit of moisture out of the soil and the trees that it climbs. Not a good option. I worry about it at D'Oro too given that you want to grow bulbs and trees in the woodland area. Once it takes hold it can be hard to get rid of.

Happy to see you’re having a break and a change of climate. Regarding the barren area in the back garden. A suggestion what about putting in flag stones like you did in your patio, Prosecco area and gravel around those stones. You could get pink gravel very fine and create a flag stone patio? No watering needed. She can add nice large pots like your terra-cotta pots with the proper plants to give it some greenery? Or just nice pink fine lime stone gravel to fill the whole area with nice large stone terra-cotta pots and an umbrella table and chairs? 🌈💕🇨🇦

In California we had a vast area of ivy, but we had rats that lived in it. Ivy rats are dreadful! How about lavender or rosemary, or a gravel garden with lots of pots? Glad you had a nice vacation!

Try drought tolerant plants native to the region. It is always best to plant those things that can survive the climate.

I hate to suggest but a small portion of that dry dirt spot. They could use artificial turf and have the look of grass and then your plants that you’re suggesting around it.

Is there a way that water from shower/bath/ roof rain could go to a systern and then the garden? They would need a plumber to install it.

Ivy brings on so many problems. Even in Spain you are doing a garden episode…maybe go to a shop, not a garden house! Be different!
