I’m a gardener and dahlia’s I too “Love”them!! Another variety that I think you would really love is Pennhill watermelon and Kevin floodlight. They are dinner plate variety and they are beautiful. The difference between the potted dahlias and the ones in the ground is because the ground temperature is cooler than the ones in the pot dahlias love to have a warm ground temperature. So if you’re growing in pots, they are most likely warmer, they seem to start out better for me in pots as well and I often start them inside to get a head start on the season. I do use a product called sluggo to keep the slugs at bay as they will destroy them.Sluggo is safe for pets and wildlife. Sluggo is an organic slug and snail killer that contains iron phosphate, which is harmless to animals like dogs, cats, earthworms, beetles, and hedgehogs. It's also not poisonous to birds or fish. On another note, I subscribe to your channel and watch you daily. My sister and I love watching you and your love of life and passion for all you do is so inspiring! Till soon! Ciao💕

Slugs love the tender shoots of the Dahlia, they don’t like copper. I purchase copper kitchen scrubbies, took them apart then cut them in segments to encircle the new growth of the Dahlia. I also purchase organic slug bate, I am hoping to win this battle.

What a beautiful hike! I really loved it. It looks like it was fun and delicious! The Dahlias usually take a bit longer to come up in the ground. I save my egg shells and then crush them in my hand and put them around the dahlias as slugs do not like rough surfaces, it cuts them. They will keep growing if nibbled on. I will be planting more tomorrow as the deer don’t eat them…yet! 😊 You will need supports for them if they grow tall as the flower heads will be heavy.

I was thinking about how you could have a little greenhouse. On the west side of you house (the side facing the lake) isn't there a pass thru with two gates? You could do a green house there. Just used doors on each end instead of gates so you could still walk thru it. I would be narrow but it could work. Regarding slugs... 1. there are pellets that will kill the slugs. You sprinkle them around susceptible plants. 2. There is diatomaceous earth which is fossilized remains. "Diatomite is of value as an insecticide because of its abrasive and physico-sorptive properties.[22] The fine powder adsorbs lipids from the waxy outer layer of the exoskeletons of many species of insects; this layer acts as a barrier that resists the loss of water vapour from the insect's body. Damaging the layer increases the evaporation of water from their bodies, so that they dehydrate, often fatally. Arthropods die as a result of the water pressure deficiency, based on Fick's laws of diffusion. This also works against gastropods and is commonly employed in gardening to defeat slugs. However, since slugs inhabit humid environments, efficacy is very low. Diatomaceous earth is sometimes mixed with an attractant or other additives to increase its effectiveness." Wikipedia dot com 3. Beer. "Many gardeners swear using beer as a slug trap is one home remedy that really does work. Slugs are attracted to the yeasty odors found in beer. In fact, they love it so much they crawl into containers with beer and drown. For gardeners who’d rather share their favorite craft brew with friends, not foe, never fear. A very inexpensive beer substitute can be mixed up with common kitchen ingredients and is just as effective as killing slugs with beer. Making beer traps for slugs is an easy DIY project, but there are some limitations to using them. These traps only attract slugs within a limited range, so traps need to be placed approximately every square yard (meter). Additionally, the beer or yeast solution evaporates quickly and needs to be replenished every few days. Rainwater can also dilute the solution, thereby reducing its effectiveness." gardening knowhow dot com I don't think you want a beer trap ever sq meter. The other two methods are the ones I used.
