An idea you might consider: Cconvert the ladder to a "library ladder" with a bar across the top and wheels on the bottom so it could be moved side to side.. It then could be left up and could still be moved out of the way if needed. - I am extremely jealous of what you have there and very impressed with what you have accomplished with it!

I like the hinged, raise up ladder idea. It takes up way too much floor space otherwise. I look forward to a deck railing out front as well, also a good rope rat line rail opportunity to prevent too much view obstruction. Cheers!

U SHOULD SEE WHAT THEY REALLY LOOK LIKE WITH A P1000

Michy, use those dock supports to hook the ladder up with pins or long bolts. Mount those above the window. Put it on the side above the window. Use a pulley mounted to the ceiling and a rope to pull it up out of the way if you have enough room to do so. Put a cleat to tie the rope up and hold the ladder out of the way when not in use. Spray bleach on the wood to kill the mold. We hope you don't fall off the porch. Be Safe !

Or do something similar elsewhere if you don't want to relocate the dock supports. Hinge the leader and hoist out the way is a great idea, Many places could work as long as it doesn't interfere while going up/down.

Your ladder looks great! One thing you may consider when you get a permanent place for it is to ensure that the base of the ladder can't kick out while you're climbing on it. I'm not sure how slippery your floor would be.

The views from the cabin deck, the loft windows and the meadow bring forth tranquility, it's no wonder there is a spring in your step and a song in your heart. My point as well. Accidental trip/slip would be devastating. And what about the pups - can’t imagine if she lost one because no railing. Lovely shot of the pup sleeping but my dog rolls over in her sleep all the time!

Here’s a little tip from a carpenter, maybe add a little angled ramp to the front of your sky mule platform to help with larger items. If it’s a heavy item for you to pull up the angle will help with the load leaving the platform. Aloha from Maui!

Yes, it’s definitely been talked about! There are some solid improvements that need to be done for that whole system.

You can even make chef boy R D Ravoli too. The ones here in America, you just pull the top open (no need for can opener). Just an option. :)

Imho ladder fits the décor perfect. At it's current angled position threads are almost level, good job. One thought, hinge rails at top underneath rails secured to sidewall topcap parallel to loft. pulley system attached at roof rafter; lift up out of way when not in use. When up, hang clothes to dry and udder stuff. You'll figure it out. keep'n it real, peace.

You're a bundle of energy and one strong woman. The view from that loft to fall asleep to and to wake up to is absolutely awesome .

Me too, I was thinking once again “put up a safety railing!” just before you mentioned it. “Don’t worry I’m not going to fall off” is not the way its works! Everyone who was ever in an accident thought it wouldn’t happen to them. Everyone who knows you, everyone who follows you, would be devastates if we found out you had fallen, despite everyone, including Steve, telling you how unsafe it was.

Just another suggestion on the ladder. Put it on a pulley System that you could raise, so it's right out of the way. Having it attached to the side of the loft. If the ladder is too long you could hinge it In the middle and fold it up out of the way as well.

How about cutting the ladder in half and hinge it to fold when you want to put it out of the way like an attic ladder. The metal brackets off of the old dock could be a pivot point at the top of the ladder. Or make a spot along the wall where you can attach the ladder to the wall vertically out of the way. The view up there is spectacular. Thanks for the episode.

Your cabin on the cliff looks great. Love the stairs to the loft. As others have suggested…..time for a railing in the loft and on the deck out front. What a terrific view!

Else it becomes a chore It's good you go hike, especially for the dogs. Cats too, in my case. Oh! And a Lee cloth to the side of that bunk to stop a midnight trip ;-)

Hinge the ladder to the top plate, parallel to the bunk then attach a pulley system to raise and lower it. It will be out of the way when not needed and add a bit of security when your sleeping.

Hi Michelle, maybe attach a swivel hinge to the right side of the ladder at the top so that it will pull back and also move to the left. That way you could just swing it out of your way and hook it on the left side. It also would look like a railing for the loft when it was up.

Yes, I think your ladder looks great. Love that live edge and the grain looks really tight, like old growth. And, I don't think you need those flat plates on the loft boards. You'll have some rigidity without them.

Use a horizontal pipe that extends back under the loft. Hinge the ladder in the pipe, slide under loft and stow against bottom of loft. Have Steve design a little counterweight system for it.

Just an Idea for your stairs/ladder. You could install hinges on the top rails and a pulley to raise the ladder when not in use.

Michy, Your ladder looks great and the view from your loft is spectacular! Sweet Dreams!. I suggest simply mounting the ladder in-line beside the loft using a pulley system to tuck up it up by the loft when not in use. It won't block any light and may be lowered directly down when needed. Consulting a Qualified Engineer about the slide and swing ladder is a great idea. Their per hour charge maybe be lowed by suppling apple pie. Clifford as the Summer cabin is a great idea and I would rather have a cargo net underneath out of the view to catch the odd skill saw and other flying things. The Meadow build will have another awesome Winter view. Gosh you are going to be busy seeing your friends Clifford and Meadow. Make sure you leave enough quality time with Steve.

Well... It's pretty obvious that Lenny is in love. I was thinking while you were at the cliff-dwelling that there might be some "Lenny-Luna-lonesomeness" going back at the "Ranch". The closing scene confirmed it. Your ladder turned out very nice. I like your idea of hiding it under the loft when not in use. I'll be interested to see how you solve the "engineering" problems, which I am very confident that you will do. After you do have some professional resources to call upon. The ladder looks great in the cabin. When you got those hinges from the dock in place on the loft, my first thought was that you could put a steel rod, or EMT between them and through the top of the stringers of the ladder and use it like a library ladder system to slide it along the loft and out of the way and doubling as a hinge to swing the whole ladder up to stow it up and out of the way. Perhaps with a pulley that can attach and detach from under the center of the lowest rung of the ladder. I look forward to Sunday mornings and your video coming out. Have a great week!!

Must have had some mild weather, I see much of the snow has melted since your last video. I'm green with envy. What a stunning sleeping spot you have, and to wake up to that view. Oh my goodness! As someone else mentioned you could put the ladder verticle with a rail on the loft and wheels, but that would make your steps probably slopped to much forward, since you have them level when the ladder is leaning back. Awesome job!

I have a similar concept as you do for the loft in my cabin. You can buy library ladder hardware. It’s a double hook hardware for the top of your ladder. The higher hook allows you to kick it out for climbing up the ladder. The lower hook allows you to hang the ladder straight to save space. Hooks will hang on a 3/4” black gas pipe you can purchase at any hardware store. Run the pipe as you would with a normal library ladder

The reason I didn’t think of that as an option is because the kitchen is on one side and a couch will be along the other wall, so the space is just too small for a library ladder.

I have almost the exact setup. I put a short rail (5’) from the middle towards the couch. When I go up the loft, I move the ladder to the center and use the top hook to kick it out. When not in use I move it next to the couch and hang from the bottom hook so it hangs vertical and out of the way. Your build so no wrong answer but I’ve been really happy with the setup and functionality

For the loft ladder you can put a 2x6 against the wall under the loft and out past it to allow the ladder to slide. Add a 2x6 on the left and right side. Drill a hole for the solid rod that will act as the hinge for the ladder. Drill two holes at the top of the ladder. The basic look would be like a towel rack in a sense.

Logs upright for support with the bark and slots cut in for Plexi glass for safety thick Plexi with nice clarity. For safety and it would look sweet
