Counterpoint: Thrawn got stabbed by his bodyguard before winning a single war; Ackbar guided the Rebellion/Alliance/New Republic through numerous wars, to repeated victories, and died peacefully (in his sleep, I believe).

@@larryroberts3598 Yes and no; Bilbringi would've likely been a defeat, but it wouldn't have been Endor 2.0- nor were the NR worls themselves ready to jump back to the Empire (whereas crawling out from the Imperial yoke was a common wish for the majority of Imperial worlds).

In terms of non-force users, ackbar has gotta be the single biggest threat to Thrawn and his plans

Dude Tharwn's fleet aint gonna do anything againest ackbar fact that ackbar uses tactics even if his fleet is more stronger and thrawn dosent he just used his entire fleet but sometimes he used his mind againest the confedarncy fleet

My god, he's right To be fair, there are quite a few characters with more screentime on RC than in their own franchises. And that's not even limited to Disney Star Wars. Or Star Wars, period. That show is a complete anomaly, it really shouldn't exist. I'm so glad it does though.

I really wish they would have a season showing Thrawn waging a rebellion against the New Republic and have Hera lead up something like Wraith/Rogue Squadron, with wedge as the flight commander. These new wraiths would be a black budget commando unit to hunt/uncover Imperials remnants without the New Republic officially recognizing the threat.

I know they wanted Hera for the "Rebels" link in Ahsoka. But when we go to all out war against Thrawn, you ARE going to want Wedge on the front lines. Be it squadron or fleet (EU Wedge never did care for fleet command tho). This is where new Canon is always a bit of a letdown, because we expect EU versions of these characters. Wedge became a huge part of the EU, you definitely miss him now.

The thing about Holdo is that if it was Leia or Ackbar or some other person the fans knew and trusted who had a secret plan they weren't telling Poe, we would be all, "hey Poe, you're being a total idiot, stand down", and many of us still were even with Holdo, but because we don't know her or trust her abilities, we're closer to Poe's headspace and more willing to go along with Poe's mutiny and his journey towards accepting that he's not always right and he can't fight his way out of every problem. It is still kind of a weird arc though, and I feel like it would've made sense for him to spend more time with Rose, since her sister died in his attack and her line, "it's about saving the people we love, not killing the people we hate" is something that Poe needed to hear, not Finn. I feel like Ackbar instead should've been leading a fleet that came and saved the rebels at Krayt, since reducing the resistance to like, 12 guys backed them so far into a corner that there really was no solution but to undo it offscreen, and that could lead into an actual War between the Resistance and First Order.

@@RorikH Rose's line shouldn't even have been in the movie. On top of being completely cringe, and coming out of absolutely nowhere, it makes no sense. War is about both of those things. You save those you love by taking down tyranny, and you take down tyranny to save the people you love. On top of that, it was hypocritical. Finn was trying to take out a battering ram cannon in order to save the Resistance - his found family, the people he had come to love. His heroic act was not out of hatred, but out of love. And Rose comes in, stops him, and what would that have done if the Resistance hadn't found secret tunnels? It would have resulted in the First Order slaughtering all of the Resistance, and Finn and Rose woulda died out there on the salt of Crait regardless. Sure, if there were no tunnels they likely would've died anyways, but at least Finn would have bought them time.

Ackbar is a bigger Chad in Legends. He died from old age but passed on wisdom there was even a ship in his honor and had a niece and nephew. Both of whom are in Luke's New Jedi Order. Disney : we just fried him Screw you Disney

He was Lando's copilot on the Millenium Falcon when they attacked the Death Star II, so kind of a hero, but such a small character that I genuinely have no idea what the point of bringing him back just to kill him could possibly be. Which fan was that supposed to service?

Ackbar is respected... by the fans. Robot Chicken respected this gigachad more than Disney ever did. We love Ackbar, and we need his true return to Star Wars. And his fish sticks are super tasty, and not having them is a big mistakey.

I've always loved that Ackbar, while not a direct match for Thrawn, was enough of a threat that Thrawn actively worked to remove him from command. To get that kind of respect from Thrawn should tell you something of Ackbar's true capabilities.

I find it amusing that Disney has to focus on the years before Episode 7 because what they did in the movies was just so awful that no good can come from it.

Agreed on all fronts Ackbar was one of my favorite all time characters. What Disney needs to do is find a voice actor close enough to sound like Erik Bauersfeld, who was his original VA and sadly passed in 2016. My copium is that they didn’t give him much screen and any voice time is because they haven’t casted a close enough VA since Erik’s passing. Hopefully they’ll find that match for the future Thrawn movie.

I think Ackbar could play a role in the alliance that's very much analagous to the role that Eisenhower played at D Day. He was the supreme commander of a force that was made up of military elements from a dozen different countries, and it was his job not only to oversee the military strategy of the largest amphibious invasion of all time, but also to find a way to turn all those forces into a single cohesive fighting force. Eisenhower wasn't the greatest tactician of WWII; that role might go to Patton or Rommel or Halsey; but he was probably the greatest leader of the war, and that might be the same role that Ackbar could play for the Alliance.

Very true, you need a better way with people than Patton or Rommel to unite disparate forces into a single cohesive one.

I'd love to see Ackbar take on at least Thrawn twice; we gotta have him take one loss with a complication to make it murky, give us a dusty finish, then Ackbar gets a runback at the series finale and takes out Thrawn's fleet, symbolically beheading the Imperial Remnant by gutting the Chimera at a pivotal moment. I mean, I'd love to see a Master and Commander style back-and-forth between them for a whole season, but that's just the basic one-two punch that can benefit both characters.

That’s why I read the old eu. He’s prominent in ever Bantam era novel, and Del Rey gave him a peaceful send off during the NJO.

Honestly my favorite parts of Star Wars are the military forces and the underworld/crime syndicates. I love the Jedi and the Sith and I know that's the main thing but ever since I was a kid I always enjoyed the military parts more. Like I wanted to be a part of rogue squadron or a Republic Commando more than a Jedi. Just growing up on the rogue squadron games, novels and comics made me like that part of the universe more.

They should've had Ackbar sacrifice himself to save the others, not that stoopid Admiral Holdo who we didn't even know until 30 minutes before she died.

Ackbar appeared in the (2015) version of battlefront but only as a hologram. I would also love to see him in more new republic stories and see more of his tactics and strategies.

Ackbar was an essential character in legends. Seeing him retire during the black fleet crisis was sad to see.

I’ve been saying this. Thrawn can’t ally with the imperial remnant with the night sisters. The remnant want to follow through with Sidious and the first order and sidious Hates the night sisters. Thrawn will let the first order and new republic Duke it out and fight the remains with a “now” greatly bolstered force

Admiral Ackbar is my favorite Star Wars character. I want to see an Ackbar movie, and why couldn't he do the lightspeed ram? I mean seriously, give him respect! Edit: I would also like to see him made to be an equal to Thrawn. I would love to see Thrawn's tactical edge stemming from his lack of political red tape and interference. If Ackbar is just as smart, but is limited by the New Republic government, he is done proper justice, but Thrawn's villinous threat/power is still clear. A final battle between the entire Republic fleet led by Ackbar vs the entire Thrawn fleet. Thrawn can be winning because the Repiublic is holding Ackbar back, only for Hera and the other characters to disobey orders and go support Ackbar.

This isn’t really on topic with the video but I really think Supervaderman hit the nail on the head with saying Disney isn’t going to let a character named Ackbar do the Holdo thing. That’s just asking for trouble

In the EU Ackbar is one of those characters that became so well fleshed out and such a beloved character. I hate what the Disney era has done to disrespect the character. When EU fans lament how he was killed off in The Last Jedi, there's the other fans that thinks he's just a meme. Ackbar in ROTJ was skill fully used, it wasn't much but his slump in the chair when The Executor plunges into the Death Star 2 shows the weight of command, it conveys that yes the Rebels have won this battle but also at a terrible cost.

Also Ackbsr had a brother/sister-- not sure which -- as his niece (Jesmin) was part of Rogue Squadron

Maybe they're waiting for him to say, "It's a Trap!" When Thrawn absolutely trashes the New Republic! (Anyway, I really wish the admiral got the attention he deserves, he one of my favorite characters!)

I agreed with you we definitely need more Ackbar especially if they going to have an adaptation of the Thrawn Trilogy and Ackbar play a huge role in it. Although I will give his silent cameo on Ahsoka a pass since his original voice actor died in 2016 while his second Tom Kane retired due to health issues!

I agree, Ackbar and the Mon Cal need more screen time. We got a Mon Cal pilot I think, the one next to Hera in the holographic Senate council meeting, but even his earlier scenes he's just a background character. I love the Mon Calamari and would love to see one as a main or side character ❤

If you watch Ackbar during the trial scene you can see he's got far more stuff going on than any of the other 'extras'. He slaps the table a few times when Hera is cleared, clearly approving of the verdict, and he gives the Senator LOOKS. I think it's likely he'll get more screentime.

I remember in one of the later NJO books of the pre-Disney EU, when the New Republic was at its low point and many in the remnants of its military were demoralized in the face of the Yuuzhan Vong taking Coruscant. Ackbar is announced as coming back to serve from retirement, and the simple transmission of "Ackbar is back" causes the entire fleet to erupt into celebrations. You just knew as a reader that this was finally a narrative turning point when the New Republic would start clapping back.

I think Filoni is replacing Ackbar with Hera. He just loves his characters too much

My head cannon on how Fey'lya had upper hand against Ackbar amongst front line soldiers in Legends is that quite a few Rebel pilots who flew early model B-Wing suffered badly from maintenance issues (s-foil, rotating cockpit, etc) and had some level of grudges against its designer Ackbar..

Thought: Filoni's hinting at all of the traitors and secret Imperials still working within the New Republic is going to be his version of Delta Source, that's going to be much, much easier to show on screen.

If respect for Legacy characters in DisCan you seek, only disappointment will you find. They flushed him out the airlock with the rest, I think I'll stick with the Ackbar that led the New Republic to victory against the Empire and was pivotal in turning the tide against the Yuuzhan Vong before passing of old age peacefully.

As a short little comment, general bail, a Billis could be played by Julie Roberts brother just give him a mustache and long hair, and he would work almost like the guy in the comics. Food for thought that’s all.

He had his back against the wall at Endor. Death Star on one side, Death Squadron on the other. He turned the situation around and ended up winning arguably one of the most celebrated Fleet engagements of the era. He won with his experience, superior tactical ability and a lot of brass balls. It also vindicated his training and mothering of the Alliance Navy from being able to do hit and run attacks to being able to stand up and defeat an Imperial Fleet, something that was unthinkable only 3 years prior.

It is time for Disney to start respecting Star Wars.

I wanted a badass fight scene where, to buy the resistance some time, akbar launches out the ship towards huxs star destroyer firing headfirst at it. He know it wont take them down but itl do damage and draw their attention. Dieing by being shot down but doing alot of damage to their guns

:30 before I watch any more of this, I'm just going on record as saying that anything Ackbar can offer in gerater prominence, my man Wedge Antilles can as well. Granted, it's Legends Wedge who's held as Ackbar's equal - even his protegée in some ways - as a strategist and tactician, but I'd really like top see that come back around. And although Ackbar's consultant return to service during the Vong War was symbolically big as well as important in turning the tide of war, I point to Wedge's Borleias Campaign as being the most strategically diverse and opening the gateway to victory.

I feel like they should include Ackbar in way more books and stuff, but Mando S3 clearly showed that they are having issues with Mon Calamari voices even if the costumes are good, so they have to find an impeccable voice actor who will actually do Ackbar justice, and preferably one who is authentic to the original voice in terms of accent.

Crazy enough, HISHE still killed him off but it was in a glorious fashion that cemented him as a legend.

I assume that in canon the fiinancial crimes that came to light around 5aby were true. Akbar spent time in white collar prison before being quietly pardoned by his coconsiprator Mon Mothma and then retired in disgrace to a pond somwwhere.

Admiral Ackbar is literally the Yang Wen-Li of the Rebels. Yet he got yeeted on Episode 8 for NO FUCKING REASON.

Ackbar is one of the most tactically able and military brilliant commander in the new republic armed forces without a shadow of a doubt. Whom turned the rebellions armed forces in a a well armed and mobile battlew fleet capable of taking on and defeating the empire at endor and in all later campaigns. True, he isn't a match for Thrawn, but no one in the new republic is and it will be very interesting to see how he and others in NRHC, manage to find a way to stop his invasion and find a way to defeat him, if that is how things go down in future series of Ashpka.

The only old characters that get respect in Disney’s canon are the ones they can milk cheap cameo points out of for easy to please fans and social media engagement

I agree. I would love to see him go toe to toe with Thrawn. He should lose, but it should be like a wrestling match dq. Hamstrung by the senate or something to build him up to the more casual fans. And lets just go ahead and forget that 7 8 and 9 exist. Kind of like how there are only 3 Indiana Jones movies.

Thrawn's campaign needs to be fought with brilliance, against incredible odds; while the New Republic's efforts should be hindered by ineptitude and corruption. Sort of the reverse of the original trilogy. I hope we get to see Borsk Fey'lya as Ackbar's antagonist.

Ackbar had just as much character development in the original trilogy as Boba Fett. If Boba Fett can get a backstory in the prequels and a sequel series just because he's popular with fans, why can't Ackbar?

If memory serves, Ackbar was an aid to Thrawn before Ackbar escaped and joined the Alliance. He learned from Thrawn, and while not his equal he was a massively influential member of the Alliance military.

I liked how he was sidelined in legends for political reasons (that bothan politician that styled himself a military leader)... and then things all fell apart for the new republic on the military front.

In my opinion it feels like Lucasfilms is scared to use the established OT characters. Aside from brief appearances from Luke and Leia, Disney has left them relatively untouched. It feels so weird, as you can see their stories being retconned into stories for newer characters, as though the original characters just dont exist anymore, while in legends they dipped they fingers into almost every pie at some point or another. While I enjoy characters such as Ahsoka I miss the staple characters, and I think Disney needs to really start searching for new talent that looks like the ot characters so that we can enjoy tgem again
