Trafalgar is the obvious real-life example. Another one I would mention is the 1866 Battle of Lissa where the Austrians under the command of Wilhelm von Tegetthoff basically did the same to the Italians. It also shares a nice correlation with the Star Wars universe because in this particular conflict the Austrians were not only critically outnumbered but also technologically deficient, and in the fact that it was a successful attempt to break a superior blockading force.

This kind of move also heavily capitalizes on the weakness of Imperial Commanders, they are usually very egotistical and not the most tactful officers. So instead of working together there's a good chance each Star Destroyer will be doing its own thing to glory hog.

Ackbar may be used to fighting in a three dimensional environment like the deep sea, but in the end it seems not even he is capable of being immune to Star Wars reality where space battles fight in two dimensional planes.

one of my favorite novels is a written sequel to the star wars trilogy. In those books, thrawn tries to set Akbar up to make him look like a spy trying to undermine the new republic. I thought that was a great plot, akbar is arrested as a spy being an agent to the empire. a big part of the plot is trying to figure that out and prove Akbar isnt secretly working for the empire. That book goes deep into the politics of the newly reformed republic and the various factions trying to work together and how easy it is to destroy for someone like Thrawn. that was lacking in the new canon sequels and I hated them and hardly learned anything about the new republic and those enemies were nothing like thrawn. They were more like a joke but thrawn with starkiller base would be terrifying.

It’s quite similar in the beginning phase to the 18th and 19th century tactic of “Capping the T” (also called “Crossing the T”) in which the goal was to give broadside attacks while the enemy is incapable of doing so. Ironically, by sailing straight at the enemy, you end up being in the exact position you hope to put them into and are relying upon your speed to carry you quickly enough so that way you don’t end up being destroyed or rendered combat ineffective because by sailing straight at the enemy, you are exposed to the maximum amount of fire arcs from their line. However, in SW, the imperial ships all have very good frontal combat capability so it’s would be better to engage them from the side so that their ability to bring guns to bear is cut in half so it’s clever but still has a very high inherent risk. And it would be best to cut straight through the middle as the formation of ships in the Imperial line would block the ships on the edge of the formation from firing as they would have their gun solutions occluded by friendly ships.

We see both the Ackbar slash and Capping the T during the Battle of Coruscant in Wedge's Gamble. There we see some rebel star Destroyers and Home One form a line and broadside some Imperial Star Destroyers, then the Mon Cal Cruiser, Mon Remonda, went and capped the lead Destroyer's T. However that book kinda implies that the best firing arc for an ISD is it's broadside instead of the front.

talking about star wars tactics is always a bit odd because while it is technically in space it's inspired by WW2 so "2D" Shipcombat and outdated dogfighting. The Akbar Slash shows this quite well. they would positon themselves on different levels of the imagined plane and all be able to fire (and this is if they don't even try to counter this tactic) . Since the ship designs are also not made for space though some of the tactics work better (I still quite love the setting and even combat but if you are looking for realism and/or interesting space combat tactics star wars isn't the place) Edit: great video though

  • @svendhooghe6725

I don't know if you ever played SW: Empire At War but if you got yourself into a fight and used this tactic speed was crucial. Leaving out the sometimes imba heroes in this game you wanted to make sure that you didn't simply exchange capital ships for capital ships. The empire could replace those faster than you and you'd end up jumping out of every system with your smaller ships as soon as they dropped in with the new big boys. The way to achieve this was to let the Mon Calamari cruisers take a beating, but get into the firing blind spot behind them a.s.a.p. You would usually end up with your 2 front cruisers being +80% damaged but still operational while they lost their 2 closest capitals. You could then let your fighters harass one half of their fleet while your capitals cleaned up the other half with concentrated fire power. Computer opponent would usually jump out quickly at that point but I've seen humans lose an entire fleet to this Ackbar Slash. Only time you couldn't pull this off is when the empire had Boba with them, his sonic charges were simply too much and their TIE fighters would cripple your capital ships engines. Great video, looking forward to the others

Why does nobody roll under the isd, bringing one side then the other to bear on the part of the ship w no heavy turbos? Why aren't the imp captains trained to roll their ships to keep max firepower on the enemy? Seems to me that a space battle should look more like a rats nest of flight paths, as each trys to keep their weapons on target, and their weak points shielded. It's not a football play, Sw mostly falls into the same traps other scifi does in picturing a near flat battlefield. I've heard a ton of times that the isd is designed to put a lot of power forward.ok, so it has designed fire arcs. So why would you want to be there? Drop below the belt line, and the amount of fire you'd take hits the crapper. Twist up behind one, and you're in the sweet zone to take out engines. These are not thrawn level insights. I don't know why it doesn't come up more. Edit: on the idea of blockades: OK I get the idea of being waiting on the hyperspace exit points to wreck whoever pops out. But did noone think "drop out sooner, and microjump to ...maybe the other side of the planet?"

Hmm, it really is a dangerous move with higher rewards knowing the empires gunners, they'll probably start shooting regardless of the cross fire. Just my imo Much tactical :o I wonder if it could make imperial commanders go ITS A TRAP! Because of all the crossfire.or use it as a trap!

Lack of tactics you mean they wasted a lot of ships especially in rebels

Really a shame what they did with Ackbar in the Last Jedi... but then again what hasn't Disney Star Wars broken (or broken yet)

I reluctantly, finally watched that one a few days ago and to my suprise I actually really liked it. They did dismiss Ackbar quickly though.
