It's not about dying | Gian Domenico Borasio | TEDxCHUV

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Palliative care is about living, not dying. The fact that we will die is the only certainty that we have in life. Looking back on their lives, dying patients share their insights with us and thus teach us how to live. All we need to do is to listen.
Gian Domenico Borasio
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

If you have been bankrupted by illness and cannot afford to either receive more treatment or pay for care to come to you in your last days (in the US, many hospices aren't covered completely by Medicare), you MAY INDEED WISH YOU HAD MADE MORE MONEY. in your lifetime!!! Sadly, this doctor's wonderful image of palliative care is only possible if there are funds to pay for good care and the cost of dying doesn't leave your loved ones destitute. This is often ignored by physicians.

This is partially incorrect. Hospice care is the ONLY service that traditional Medicare covers at 100% for every Medicare beneficiary, given they have a terminal illness that would qualify them for hospice. Even Medicare Advantage Plans revert back to traditional Medicare benefits when a person chooses hospice care, so that the services are covered at 100%. Hospice then pays for pr provides all equipment, supplies, related medications, etc, and none of this will cost a dime. What isn't covered under hospice or Medicare is custodial care, meaning, there is still an expectation on the caregivers to provide general personal care, supervision, and other care that does not require a skilled nurse, as the family can be taught how to do many things. Just like parents are taught how to care for medically fragile children with feeding tubes and sometimes even on portable ventilators, there is always an expectation that the involved family will do their part to care for their loved one.

@@jennh2096 hospice at home is covered 100%, meaning you have to have a home and people to care for you 24/7. Facility-based hospice, not a free ride. Not here in NJ anyway. Hospice in a NH? Not even close.
