    Yes and no, it started with him pulling out the dark emotions he had within him, then it turned into frustration cause he thought he did a good job but it wasn't what the director wanted, it didn't feel right. After a while, the director told him to hit a couple of pointers, as he did, and that turned out to be the end result we see.

    I think one of the big games I have that relationship with is Dark Souls 3. Playing it through the first time I was (obviously constantly dying to my own stupidity of course) pretty much always completely lost or had no idea what I was supposed to be doing. Nowadays me and friends take bets as to which of us can speedrun it the fastest, and I'm pretty sure I could do the whole thing blindfolded. It's always crazy to look back on certain games and just go "Wow, I played this for the first time at one point".

    In the 2000's, my parents got divorced because my dad wanted to spend his free time playing games instead of doing things with his family. My mom would say all the time, "stop playing those stupid video games". As a kid I remember beeing stunned with the video games. After the divorce, he became really depressed, and started living sort of a hermit life, playing an insane amount of hours, not going out much and still not paying much attention to me or my sister. He used to play mostly single-player titles, but I remember this time I visited him (I was 8 or 9 probably) and we played Mame32 together all day, booting a lot of arcade classics like Cadillacs and Dinosaurs and playing co-op on the same keyboard. The colors, the graphics (lol), the music... That day I just fell in love with video games too, and I know he was happy to share it with me. Then I became a teenager and we grew distant for a lot of reasons. Many years later, I understood that he had always struggled mentally, so I tried to get closer. The only thing we could really talk about and share were video games. "So, what are you playing this days dad?" and then he would show me some new game he was trying out or some gameplay clip he recorded. I was already a full gamer at the time, and my sister too, so the three of us talked about games a lot. He even took us to a gaming convention once. After all, we finally had a little bit of fun together. But he never changed, he continued with really bad habits, smoking 2 packs of cigarettes per day and sitting all day gaming. My dad died last month and it hurts like hell, god knows he made many mistakes, but he gifted me and my sister a true passion for games and in the end, we know he was a good guy. I would love to talk or play anything with him right now. If you can read this dad, I'm proud of all the games you showed me and that you were a true PC/internet geek. I hope they have really cool games in heaven. All of my love, Juan.

    As someone who's played video games for damn near 3 decades, i just want to say firstly, i'm incredibly impressed with the sheer breadth of games shown here. Sure, there was a lot of well known titles, but there were also some wonderfully obscure games and long lost references (big nod to the Red vs Blue content) and it really made me smile as the gaming equivalent of a boomer. Secondly, this was wonderfully heartfelt and touching. In the most sincere way, i'd like to thank you and say that this truly brought a tear to my eye. These wonderful pieces of media are so often thought of as just entertainment or violence or wasted time, in other words "just a stupid video game' and you've distilled perfectly why it's so much more to so many of us growing up and becoming adults. I don't think i'll ever stop playing games. I really hope i don't.

  • @Eis_
    @Eis_2 жыл бұрын

    "It's just a video game.", says someone who cries over a book or a movie. You gotta realise: Video games nowadays, unlike arcade games before, are interactive movies. Its not like we are watching a guy lose his son because of betrayal. At some point, we were that guy. At some point, we were his son. We understand both their sentiments, and sometimes even their enemies'. That's what makes games more special.

    I know, right? So many people say that it's just a video game and it's nothing to get upset over, then they turn around and cry at a book. As someone who was homeschooled, video games were the only way I could experience life.

  • @solidrock8978

    @solidrock8978

    Not interactive movies. They're more. In games you can literally decide how it ends. You decide the twists and turns. It's the most special form of media in history, and once tv and Movies finally die people in coming generations will all appreciate games as games. Amen

    This honestly felt like this was directed straight at me. I have played everyone of these games, and enjoyed the hell out of em’. You wouldn’t believe how surprised I was when I saw Second Sun. That game is my favorite. If I’m dying that’s the last game I’m playing. I love Red vs Blue, and there was a crap-ton of clips from it. It’s surprisingly deep at times. This was awesome. Thank you for making this. And thank you for not using that cliche music in every video like this ever. This felt different. It felt personal.

    Games like these force you to really feel your emotions. Most of the time people like to run from their feelings, I think thats why when the games are finished its hard to dial in on those feelings again. I also think this pattern has a lot to do with people's attachment to nostalgia.

But the hero never gets to see that ending, they’ll never know if there sacrifice actually made a difference, they’ll never know if the day is actually ever saved, and in the end, they just had to have faith. A hero doesn't sacrifice there life to become a legend, its who they sacrifice it for in the end. To give your life for someone you love and care about is what makes you a hero. Some stories are lost to history, people who deserved to be remembered are forgotten but that doesn't stop a hero. A true hero is someone who could care less about being remembered and cared more for doing the right thing

But those seasons showed that even without Church, the bonds between the members won't just break down and fade away. The later seasons also develop the personality of the characters even more. We as the audience our first time seeing the directors eyes and realizing what utter turmoil this man is in after losing the love of his life. His mistakes almost costed him his daughter, and that reveal when he tells Church “you were my greatest creation” Church: “I don’t know what I am, but I know one thing, I’m more than just a copy of you, I’m better then you” Director: “I wasn’t speaking to you”. Utterly destroyed me the first time I saw it, and like a video game I can never experience it for the first time again. In essentially what is the death of the main villain, I cried hard and didn’t feel like he was a villain anymore but also one of us, a good person who just tried to bring back there loved one for even one more second of time with them. Director: “I think I have a way to bring her back this time for good, to do it right…. I just need a little bit more time” Utterly Gut wrenching

    I let a tear roll down watching this. They’re not just games. They’re stories, lessons, people, journeys, trials and tribulations, love, empathy, misery, joy, frustration, anger, the realisation of the monster within, the slaying of the monsters ahead and within. I just watched 23 years of my life flash by in a few minutes remembering all the laughs with friends, all the quiet nights at 4am with nothing but anxiety and depression setting in finding some semblance of relief in these stories, the joy of overcoming difficulty, the endless hours spent experiencing these worlds tirelessly built from the ground up by a community, for a community that until recently was mocked for our shared hobby. I’m so glad gaming has become mainstream and so many people can go back and enjoy these titles that literally moulded our human experience through our developmental years. I’m glad I get to go back and relive those memories.

    Honestly? Sometimes games are better at parenting or at teaching you values than parents. I lived with a single mother who didn't understand my interest in gaming at all (I'm a game designer nowadays) and I was heavily bullied at school for "being a nerd" and "it's a boy's thing" (90s, in case someone is wondering). It got pretty ugly in high school. Games reminded me that there are simply things in life, like the happiness and wonder of children at sharing a common favorite character, like the amazement of a teenager reacting for the first time to a groundbreaking tale, like the laughter and loss and love that can be conveyed through gaming like in no other media, that are worth fighting for. Even if people mock you for it it. I'm proud of the scars I carry. But whenever someone goes "It's just a stupid/little game" my jaw clenches, because without them I would have been a miserable kid, and I know I'm far from being the only one. They were the storyteller by my bedside I never had and, talking about things I didn't know I needed to listen. Everyone needs someone like that, even, perhaps especially, as we get older and things get even more heavy to manage. And whenever I hear a parent spouting nonsense like that, I have to hold myself back from replying "...And because you don't want to connect to what your kids actually like and understand why they do, I'll have to create even more games for them." For what's worth, I hope my creations someday help a lot of other people around the world. It doesn't matter the genre or scope, I just want them to be good. I just want to make something I would be able to give to little kid I was back then with pride.

    People nowadays don't understand what gaming was like in the 90's. You had to hide it. People would always make fun of you. It was truly special when you found a fellow gamer. It was a completely different world than today. It's a good thing because games are a legitimate form of storytelling and entertainment, but a bad thing because corporations caught on to how much money is in the industry shortly after the turn of the century and decimated the artform.

    These games taught us what it means to be a hero, a villain, what is to have courage and what it is to have honor. What it’s like to love, to hate. To feel pain, fear, hope. They taught us that when we are faced with adversity, we must stand and fight for what we believe in, even if it means costing your own life. They taught us that when that zero hour dawns upon us to fight like hell. They made us who we are, to call it “just a game” is abysmal.
