No one is “crapping themselves” until it, like all the other promised cheap EV’s, actually makes it to the market in US.

Many consumers are tired of the low price, high quality claims regarding these foreign EV promises. After dealers stock them I honestly expect they'll be offered in 2026 for $32+K if history is indicative.

Most older people like me need 200_250 miles range. Our current ICE cars will serve for infrequent longer trips until the nursing home takes away our keys. A very important feature that would be worth paying extra for is vehicle to load. As we move to solar power at home, a 50KWH portable battery is a very attractive feature. Just imagine how useful it would be with an off grid inverter at your weekend getaway. I have about $15,000 invested in my DIY server rack 50KWH at my home. With an extra 50KWH and a few more panels,I could kiss the grid goodbye. As it is now,we use very little grid power. It’s cheap enough to maintain the grid connection that I would not likely disconnect, but more options make for greater reliability.

I'm waiting for Aptera but if this is real they would have a shot. We all sleep so for a commuter car depending on cost fast charging could be a waste of money and degrade the batterie block faster. Afordability is a top requirment.

I don’t think sodium-based battery is the reason for increase range. quite the opposite is true; range is less than lithium-basedbut the making of it is cheaper since it doesn’t rely on costly mining of rare earth materials. so the impact of this new chemistry is on more affordable EVs.

I don’t think we are getting these in the us any time soon. We get the EV 7 which seems to be a great car but is much too big and expensive for me. But you can but one right now.

They forgot to mention that EV's are better for the environment, combatting climate change. Even if you voted in a wrong government that insists on burning more coal . I love Kia/Hyundai. Got one and it's the best car I ever had. And I had a Mercedes before this one.

Raw material costs do not support a 400 mile range EV car for $24K right now or in the next two years. A 150 mile $24K EV is more realistic for 2024 but other than that this is just clickbait.

Until Hyundai/Kia Group get their dealers under control, they'll continue to suffer the same price-gauging attrocities that Ford and GM do, which just drives customers further into Tesla's arms. I own a 2017 Kia Soul EV compliance car. Despite some battery recall issues, limited range, and being saddled with the obsolete CHAdeMO high speed charging system, I'm rather fond of it. For the local commuter car that it is, it has been wonderful and has certainly saved me a lot on running costs. Kia has great ergonomics. So I WANT to see their new generation of evs succeed. But details matter, including cost, most especially. Until we actually see the Tesla "model 2" and the production Kia ev2 in the flesh and get some reviews with specs, it is impossible to compare vehicles. We should not forget China. They are scheming for a way into the U.S. market and may have found it by way of partnership with Mexico. We will have to see how much they inflate their prices when they get here, but if they keep it under a 50% increase over their China market prices, they still could put real pressure on their competitors to match their prices.

That is total BS. The current LFP batteries that most manufacturers use will last much longer than most cars will ever drive. We are talking 500,000+ miles. And they are getting much cheaper to produce and repair too. Older EVs with NMC chemistry are more likely to need a new battery at some point and it's true that Tesla and others are charging obscure prices for that. However, you can have individual cells replaced by independent garages for a fraction of the price. I plan on such a repair for my Tesla Model S when the time comes (it's a 2014 with nearly 250,000 miles on it btw.).

This is bullshit. What do you mean a range boost due to sodium ion batteries? You stated sodium ion batteries will enable it to go from NYC to Washington DC and back without charge... That is fundamentally false, sodium ion battery power density is lower than LiFePO batteries which are also lower power density than Li-ion batteries. Manufacturers don't pick to invest in sodium ion for range, they invest for price. Sodium ion batteries have the potential to cost substantially less than lithium variant batteries.

  • @markbennett6658

True although battery tech is rapidly developing and small EVs with big range and a high energy density aren’t that far away. The upside for sodium ion batteries as well as cost is the abundance of sodium which can be extracted from sea water and doesn’t involve mining. A sodium ion EV has already been launched in China and although not good currently for longer range vehicles should be sufficient for city cars.

I would not buy an EV. With all of the issues. EVs catching on fire,to repairing body work, few charging stations. Little infrastructure for EVs, charging stations not working or full, EVs are sinner city driving use. $24,000 is better but its still $24,000. If it was around $10,000 as a third car, I can see. The battery technology is just not there yet. Maybe in another 10 years we will see.
