“And it’s easily six months of work contained within this video” - it’s always good to understand context and set expectations accordingly, thanks for that Adrian. Great lesson.

Omg you saved me from selling my classical guitar! I am just a beginner and used an acoustic to learn the simple common songs. I just got myself a classical one to do more notes and melodies but I felt helpless. Now after watching this I have faith again and no way I’ll give away such a jewel of an instrument. Thank u so so much. U are a great teacher.

Thank you so much for demonstrating SLOWLY the sequence of finger picking! Other teachers go so fast and fingers are too close to strings you have no idea which string is being "struck". Thank you for patience and keeping it simple.

Adrian is the best. Not only does this lesson show the patterns, it show in real time playing chords and melody, rather than rote exercises with no real time playing. Check out his Robert Johnson video, nails it. Plus Adrian has the "Robert Johnson" long skinny fingers, the real deal. I'm a decent guitar player and Adrian has helped me so much, never stop learning and improving.

AWESOME video!!!!! Thank you so much! I have been searching for a while now for a video exactly like this but have been unsuccessful. Most beginner picking videos just show you one or two patterns. This video is really great because I can see how the more complex patterns are extensions of simpler ones. Lots to chew on here. :)

This is a great introduction, and more. A tip for those who have started getting a hang of these patterns is to check out Billy Strings cover of Bob Dylan’s “Don’t think twice”. It’s incredibly hard - because it’s Billy Strings - but in his version there are at least four different patterns of fingerpicking. I have practiced four over a month now, maybe two, finally I am getting close to play it through. Here is my point. I put that project a side for a bit, and realized that I suddenly started to learn other songs way quicker. Hard work that payed off!

A great exercise that will improve your playing in remarkable ways is to hold a pick and do all the finger picking patterns. Years ago I learned all the folk stuff like Simon and Garfunkel, Jim Croce, Dylan, James Taylor, etc, and fairly recently I got into Tony Rice and his wild flatpicking stuff and to able to do his 5-3-4-1 patterns during strumming, I started playing all those folk songs, holding a pick. Of course, it's awkward as hell in the beginning but once you get it, it serves you really well.

Thank you for fantastic lessons, I've followed your Mystery Trail lesson to learn some fingerpicking, but noticed that my thumb work got pretty sloppy and inconsistent - I skip a pluck or two occasionally. Does it mean that I am going too fast and now get to unlearn an acquired "bad habit"? Thank you again!
