Thanx Jeff. I had no idea how complex fitting a new battery to a motorcycle has become. I have learned a lot through watching your videos though.Informative and educational and professionally presented. I will keep an eye on the bike, it’s about a month old now with 1350 miles up. It stood for a week whilst I was ill and it started fine afterwards. Cheers for the heads up about the batteries and the different charger they require. Take care Neil

Love your Channel Brother . And it is because of my fav RE Himalayan. Just to quote by my personal experience of a similar bike by Kawasaki Bajaj ; which I used as a daily commuter for more than 5 yrs , never changed or charged my battery . In the US , motorcycle riding is a Luxury . In India , its a survival . Most of us we have a motocycle for each one of us in the family . So, never had a complaint about the battery , tyres = Sss. The factory fitted tyres got punctured within 7-8 months of daily use and lots of pot holes and nails/thorns on the road , in the bush . So , I changed for a 4ply tyres , next 3 yrs = No puncture. On the whole , love your channel , love your presentation , my next bike is The Himalayan. Lots of love from South India. Please keep coming with more Mods on this bike . Thank you once again .

My Himalayan came with a gel battery - no nasty acid spills if the bike is dropped. I replace the batteries on my bikes every couple of years or so as a matter of course. I have considered fitting a lithium ion battery but they don't work so well in freezing conditions and I ride all year round. I should also point out that my bike lives most of the time outdoors and I ride every day. For three months of the year the average temperature is -5C. For the last two winters the gel battery has performed flawlessly and I have only just replaced it as part of my normal maintenance schedule.

You made an important point.. look after your battery! I have an 8D lead acid starter battery in my boat that was purchased in 2005 still going strong. Batteries need to be on a float charger.. and how many dealers use a trickle charger on the floor. I'd had the bike a month and the battery's already kaput. Happened with the Interceptor too. As to the battery warranty lol, never saw a dime!

I made for the bikes a jumper cable that we can take with us on long trips, smaller wire and clips. Friday we go for a long weekend to Luxemburg and Germany. Five or six bikes, we go there every year for the very good road's and it is a very good hotel as well. We do different trips every time and a different way to there. In this manner we see places in Belgium where you normally never comes.

I thought I would share this, I see people changing batteries all the time when they are just low on water. After 2 years my 2022 Himmy battery began giving me problems starting and the trickle charger stopped charging. So I pulled the RE battery partially out of the holder, pealed k the long sticker back about 1 centimeter, so I could see the long service strip below it, I then pried it out with a knife and saw that all the cells were low on water. I then filled them with naturally distilled (rain) water using an injector with needle and then closed it up. I put the battery back on the motorcycle trickle charger and six hours later it indicated that it was fully charged again. Throwing out a battery just because it is low on water is like buying a new motorcycle every time it runs out of gas, but you see a lot of people doing it. In part because they do not keep the bike on a trickle charger, and secondly because they let the battery run dry. Of course the sticker over the service strip helps hide the fact that you need to service them and gives the false impression that it is truly no maintenance. Also using a black plastic case means that you cannot easily see the internal water levels. You actually have to open the battery and look down the tiny service holes. All this is simply a great strategy to sell more batteries.

The iron phosphate Lithium battery is an improvement over the nickel based ion Lithium battery. The LifePO4 (LFP) has a little higher thermal runaway than the L-ion, but contrary to false claims, both will explode and burn. The internal failure temp of the L-ion batt is 300F and the LFP is 400 - 500F. So the LFP is more stable but still can experience thermal runaway. There are vids out there of LFP vehicle batteries burning and killing people. When the L-ion burns it off gases close to 30% hydrogen, when the LPF burns, it produces about 50% hydrogen. So one could say that the LPF is slower to explode, but when it does burn, the fire is more intense. These stats are from fire fighters. Now imagine one of those batteries going ballistic while riding it. You have a highly flammable plastic side cover and plastic seating material to protect you. Not a pretty thought as the battery burns over 800 degrees. The L-ion battery's recommended external safe temperature is 70 degrees ambient. So with the extended safety of the LFP that max external temperature would fall between 90 and 100 degrees. Now the question is how hot does the battery get on the Himmy (sitting behind the engine and exhaust) on a 70 - 80 or 90 degree day? How about the garage where it is stored? I personally like to play it safe, the lead acid batt has never been known to be unstable and suffer from internal thermal runaway. Just a FYI to my fellow bikers, like we are all learning, just because something is claimed to be safe and effective, doesn't mean its true.

What year and in what condition is your bike? Lithium Iron not Ion batteries need at minimum of 13.4v to charge them. If you have a bike older than 1980 OR you have a bike that has been neglected and in poor working order, then it probably wont work. Mine on the other hand is in perfect running condition so it was an easy choice to upgrade to a Lithium Iron Phosphate battery. I live in England. I had the loan of a Euro5 Himmy whilst my Inty was having the brake callipers replaced under a recall. The E5 is supposed to be more comfortable, but as the owner of a late model Euro 4 Himmy I certainly can’t tell the difference and I found the screen noisier than the standard screen too, apparently the seat is supposed to be more comfy, again, I couldn’t tell the difference. I won’t mention that funny new navigation aid thingy they have stuck on the side of instruments. For me the biggest worry about E5 Himmy’s is the ransome ware that is fitted. Yes it has a learning ECU, but will it allow the bike to run a DNA air filter and up grade exhaust? Will it allow the running of the big bore kit if an owner wanted to fit one? Just food for thought guy’s, food for thought.

The content is still valuable, and if it gets them more views and keeps them on KZread making videos, small price to pay. Example: a bit back, Itchyboots had one with her kneeling and looking dejected, and the title was "I can't go on". The video involved a road closure. That's it. Eh, whatever.
