Gerry suffered with alcoholism and depression throughout his life and this heartfelt track was written for his wife Carla Ventilla who he met in 1965. She spent a large part of their marriage helping Gerry through his issues but in the end it finally got too much for Carla and they divorced in 1990, twelve years after he wrote this for her. RIP Gerry, a fine musician.

A pure Love song from a Man who finally woke up to the the Woman in his life, realising what she really means to him.
I just turned 60, and this was the music of my teens. I am so glad to see you both enjoying the old music! This is why old people like me say today's music just isn't the same!
Scottish singer Gerry Rafferty wrote and released this song in 1978. It was the third release from his album City to City. This was the follow up to Baker Street. Beautiful song with great vocals and a wonderful melody. This was popular on the contemporary pop Billboard. It made it to Number 1 in the US and Number 5 on Canada. Great reaction. Buckets of Maple Syrup love from Canada ❤️ ❤️ 🇨🇦🇨🇦

Rafferty was one of those rare musicians who didn't want the fame - just wanted to make music. Such a tragic loss. A few more of his Songs you might enjoy, "To Each And Every One of You", "City to City", "Home and Dry", "Night Owl", "Family Tree", "Sleep Walking" and "Wise as a Serpent".

I agree with your Level 42 recommendation. I lived in London in 1986 and where ever you went, Level 42 was playing. I bought the Lessons In Love CD (the new format that was replacing vinyl records) at Virgin Records where I met a relative new-comer, Daniel Day Lewis, who was there promoting his National Theatre play, The Futurists. The Pretenders Chain Gang began playing and when he sang along, DDL really belted out, "For making us paaahhhhhrt!" I digress, but that memory is always tied to my Level 42 CD because DDL signed the case. I saw Level 42 at Wembley Stadium in December 1986. Great times and wonderful country to visit.

“Home and Dry” is my favorite song by Gerry Rafferty!
In my top 10 of favorite songs of all time! Just like the song says it has a hold over me LOL
I know you once reacted to Al Stewart's 'Year of the Cat'. I wonder if you could take a little time to react to another of Al Stewart's priceless gems from the 70s. The song is called 'Time Passages', and if you like saxophones and clarinets, that's a song for you.😊
This is my favorite song by Gerry...A great love song with a great meaning...An awesome song.
I love Gerry Rafferty. This is a great song.

Please try Rickie Lee Jones - she's such a unique singer and songwriter that I know you both will like. Her first album hit in 1979 and had several hits on it, and the one that made her famous was "Chuck E's in Love." Check that one out, and then you'll be eager to hear the rest of her hits. Trust me! p.s., she had four Grammy nominations off that album, and won "Best New Artist."

My favorite song by Rafferty is "Home and Dry" the entire City to City album is a Masterpiece in my opinion... Give Home and Dry a listen. Great pop song.
LOVE this song!
He's not only thankful but he's faithful. He knew it was her and it would always be her and he would always be there and committed to her
I love this song. Over the years this song would usually be playing on the radio when I was either on my way to or leaving from my visiting my extended family. It's been also a constant when spent those some evenings working late at the office. The radio would be on a particular station and this was one of the songs that always played.
Great song. May I also recommend "Home and Dry", "Night Owl", and "Days Gone By" should you do Mr. Rafferty again? I also noticed you haven't yet reacted to the OTHER really famous "Gerry" in music history, that being Gerry Marsden of the British Invasion group Gerry and the Pacemakers. Their signature hit is "Ferry Cross the Mersey", though they had many other classic songs.

Love this. Whole album has a story behind it, for me. This whole album is lovely and this ome of my favourite songs on it.
OMG I watched your little girl dancing to Prince and it brought back such memories of my younger daughter when she was around that age. She would do this in her room or make the bed of my pickup truck her “stage”, until she saw us watching and she would do that embarrassed withdrawal just like your daughter. She’s in her 30s now and I’m past 70. Thank you for bringing a sentimental tear to an old man’s eye. Great choice on the Gerry Rafferty song. Was one of mine and my wife’s favorites when we were dating in 1978. Married the next year and still together 43 years later. You took me on two sentimental journeys today.
If Amber is looking for a band that features the Sax alot, I'd recommend "John Cafferty, and the Beaver Brown band". Songs like; "Tender Years" "Some like it hot" "Garden of Eden" "NYC song" "Pride of Passion" and "Mariya". All bangers! *They were also the band who's music was 100% the soundtrack to the movie "Eddie and the Cruisers". (Pt 1 and 2) You and Jay will absolutely love them. 😃
Love this one from Gerry. I think you guys are due for another Little River Band song. Amber if you like sweet songs with that 70s sound your gonna love " Reminiscing ".

Ah, my favorite Gerry Rafferty song! I never get tired of listening to it and it brings back so many memories! Thank you so much for this reaction! 💙✌
I remember hearing this song on the radio as a kid in the car with my dad and mom. It must have been the late 1970's
Glad you got back to Gerry Rafferty. I suggested this song a while ago. I think it was around Valentine's Day. A beautiful song that appears to be simple but is very ‘refined’ with an important meaning. It seems he wanted to honor his wife with this song. "Get it Right Next Time" for your next GR?
What I have always liked about Gerry was his voice was so smooth and soothing. You just get lost in the song. They just don't make music like this anymore and I was a teenager that grew up in the 80's and saw and heard some of the best music ever. If you want to have a song that tugs at your heart, give a listen to Red Sovine. Old style country with great story telling.
Speaking of Gerry Rafferty, you've already reacted to Stuck In The Middle With You by Steelers Wheel, with him on vocals. You can react to Star by Steelers Wheel.
The secret to this song is that is so delicate that upon first listen is seems unassuming and maybe just a "chill" song but truth is that it is an immensely emotional song that is just waiting to catch you when you're alone. Also, it's a patient song; it is waiting to sink into your emotions years later, allowing itself to resonate deeper into your heart. Right Down The Line will just grow and grow its way into you.
Happy to be the first one here! :)
This song summons my late husband, we were together through some thick through the years, such peace is mine now, listening. RIP my Danny and Gerry

It was really nice to grow up at a time when meaningful pop/soft rock songs like this were all over the radio, as well as hard rockers, metal, prog, r&b, soul, even disco, you name it!
Gerry is such a writer and singer...
I only need one word to describe this song....Beautiful!!!
I actually saw Gerry Rafferty way back when he partnered with Billy Connelly in the Humblebums, he had an amazing career. ✌️

Another mellow & chill song by Gerry Rafferty is Get it Right Next Time. Has his mellow sound but different than Baker Street & Right Down the Line. I just love his vibe.
I remember hearing this on the radio when I was a kid in the 70s. Looking back, I think the 70s had the best music across all the genres; rock, soul, r & b, country.
Gerry Rafferty wanted to express how he loved this woman, but didn't know how but to write and sing this song. Jim Croce did much the same thing in the song, "I'll have to say I love you in a song." It's a lovely song that would make a great reaction for you!

I just got home from a drive from Orlando to Denver and back, helping my son move. I drove alone the whole time and had to take back roads most of the way. In some areas, I'd lose data and sometimes even FM radio. Fortunately,my van is old and still has a CD player. I had 6 CDs with me and one was Gerry Rafferty -City to City . It was the perfect, soothing CD to have and sing along with for the most nerve -wracking parts of that drive!
