'It's bad': Van Jones reacts to SCOTUS ruling on presidential immunity

CNN political commentators Van Jones and Scott Jennings weigh in on the Supreme Court's ruling that Donald Trump may claim immunity from criminal prosecution for some of the actions he took in the waning days of his presidency in a decision that will likely further delay a trial on the federal election subversion charges pending against him. #CNN #News

    You know what, Scott, I think I'll take a pass on your reassurances that Congress can always step in and throw out a criminal president. What we have witnessed with our own eyes is that Congress becomes part of the problem, and constantly finds ways to ignore, marginalize, dismiss, participate in, and/or otherwise capitulate to outrageous behavior on the part of the POTUS.

    No. The Founders wanted to restrain the government. The whole purpose of the government is to protect our inaliable rights. It was meant to be small. Judicial is the weakest of the 3 branches.

  • @forfun6273

    @forfun6273

    Күн бұрын

    If the president commits a crime that isn’t in his official capacity then they can still impeach him. They can pretty much impeach him for anything if they have the votes. Police officers have qualified immunity. It’s their duty to enforce the law. The president is the head of the executive branch which’s duty is to enforce the law. So why tf would a random police officer have immunity but not the president? The president dictates policy to the atf, fbi, cia,NSA, and all the other agencies. If he orders one of those agencies to do something thinking it’s going to save American lives but he ends up being wrong then he shouldn’t go to jail. If he had the potential to go to jail then you would compromise the ability of the federal government to enforce the law and protect Americans. Obviously there’s a line that can be crossed between acting in an official capacity and being a tyrant or abusing your power. In that case house impeaches senate finds guilty and removes. Once that happens then he’s fair game for criminal prosecution by the appropriate courts.

    There's a precedent for civil immunity but not criminal immunty. Nixon v. Fitzgerald (1982): The Supreme Court held that the President is entitled to absolute immunity from civil damages liability for acts within the "outer perimeter" of his official responsibilities. This means the President cannot be sued for damages for official acts taken while in office.
