He's probably my first choice too, but there's other good coaches out there. Lots of teams are firing good coaches. The problem is, those same teams will be competing for good coaches too. I suspect the reason a deal with Berube wasn't done is because HE is waiting to see what teams end up with an opening in the off-season. Ottawa may not be his (or anyone's) #1 choice after seeing what happened this year. I'll cry too though, if we don't get a Stanley Cup-winning coach that can lead this generation of young players.

The team surged last season because they were playing the systemless DJ Smith style they were used too. When the second half of this season came around, they had a coach come in and basically have to teach them the basics again. Thats why there was no late season surge this year. They went back to teaching structured hockey and the players were learning a whole new system on the fly. Something our very young team had never experienced before as DJ was the only coach most of them knew. A full summer with a systems coach like Berube or a Hakstol (or if a Cooper, Sullivan, Brind Amour gets let go) will get this team back. The core is there. They just need to tinker with the depth. Get a good veteran 2 way bottom 6 forward to replace Kubalik. Replace Chychrun with a top 4RHD and find a 3rd pair RHD to replace Brannstrom. Then obviously goaltending is the biggest issue. Korpi isn't movable right now, you hope a new defensive system will help him out. As for Forsberg, I think he has value to a team as a good veteran backup, and will likely be moved. Then you search UFA and the trade market for a 1A option. (Ullmark the obvious target but a lot of teams will be in on him.)

Sens fan here, this wasn’t a year I was expecting playoffs but I was hoping for it to at least be close. But man was this team a disappointment. In my mind hope is gone and while I’ll still support, they are going to have to come out of the gates swinging in order to pull back fans hope. We have seen big offseason moves, we’ve had a change in leadership and it doesn’t seem to have worked. The only way they are getting fans back on board right now is by playing great hockey in the first few months of the next season and not deciding that they’ll win games after Christmas

I'm curious what Sens fans think of Brady as a captain. From the outside he seems too easy to neutralize at times by getting him riled up off the puck. Not saying it'd be like the Bruins giving Marchand the C back when he was licking guys, but he lives on the edge and I could see where it might annoy some fans while others love the passion.

@@abbatoirnoises it’s hard to say but it wouldn’t seem so. Most fans love Brady. His emotion gets him every now and then, but not that often, so it's not a big issue. It also works the other way when his emotion carries the team. There's hope for the Senators. Last year they had top 10 PP & PK, but somehow with basically the same players those were lousy this year. Last year players like Stutzle and Sanderson made huge steps forward, this season Sanderson kept improving, but Stutzle took a big step back, hopefully he can take a step forward again. The Norris injury has been a nightmare. Pinto and Greig look to be players. I think the team will get better, with experience and if they just work on things with the right coaches, but the only way they can possibly get into the playoffs is if they fix the make-up of the team. They need to bring in a #1 goalie, a RHD, some bigger/grittier (hard to play against) players , some more defensive-minded players, and some more veterans to help stabilize things and guide the young guys. It's a tall order with the contracts / cap situation.

Yeah... Last season, the PP bailed Ottawa out. This season, it just wasn't clicking. However, what's concerning to me is the absolutely horrendous Western road trips. This season they were 1-14-1 when on the road vs the West. Last season, they had similar numbers. They just _can't_ win when they aren't playing in the Eastern Time Zone, lol. Against the Metro, Ottawa went 12-12 (evenly split home/away). Against the Atlantic... Ottawa had an amazing road record; 9-3-1. Home record was 6-6-1... so not horrible. It's these road trips that Ottawa seems to not win on... same thing for the last few years. Once Ottawa can finally win on the road is when Ottawa finally makes it into the playoffs.

If they can't move Korpisalo then move Forsberg for a vet goalie like Markstrom.Markstrom was a good starter so split the games like 35 for Markstrom and 47 or less for Korpisalo. The reason the defence was lacking this season was the only good right shot they had was Zub.If Zub was hurt then Ottawa had a hard time. I proposed Jusso Valimaki,Sean Durzi and Liam OBrien, plus a first for Chychrun,Hamonic,JBD and Kubalik.I thought Connor Ingram as well for Forsberg, but if you can't move Korpisalo then a better backup is needed. That's 2 right shot developed d men. Then move Brannstrom and Oskar Petterson for a vet left shot d man.A third pairing to second pairing vet.Edmundson is one,a big player.

Every year, I think maybe this is the year they get back to being a bubble team with a chance to squeak in and every year the wheels come off. I completely agree that the Ottawa salaries look like a playoff team, without having even seen the playoffs (other than Tkachuk there to cheer on his brother). Other than a rink closer to Ottawa, all they need is goalies to stop the puck once in a while and a couple of the right kind of veterans. Not veterans who have just lost a lot of games and chipped in a few points, but players who can set an example for the younger players and know what it takes to win. Given the lack of cap space and expiring UFA contracts that might be a all order. Hockey Canada has clearly let the NHL down in its failure to produce and support the production of the next generation of Canadian star goalies with the lackluster crop we have these days.

Seems like every goalie looks a lot better once they leave Ottawa. So maybe it was the lack of team structure and crappy goalie coaching. They've replaced the goalie coach and identified a need for more structure and more veterans who can play with structure. So they _might_ not need to get a new goalie. But they do need a good solid veteran RD. And one or two veteran forwards for the bottom six. So something between tweaking and retooling.

There are idiots in every fanbase, but most Sens fans are generally pretty level-headed. Among the fans I know, the debate last summer was whether or not the Sens would make the playoffs. Not whether or not they'd win the cup. Adding Chychrun, a healthy Norris, and Korpisalo seemed like net improvements so expecting them to go up from 86 points wasn't crazy. But DJ did whatever he did. Pinto got suspended. Pierre decided Tarasenko was what they needed instead of a RD, and then got fired. The lesson I take away from the last few years is that they weren't identifying needs and filling them. They were just trying to add "good players". It's almost like the GM was more concerned with looking good to the owner in the short term with splashy signings or trades, and less focused on building a foundation for long-term success.

To be fair, a lot of rival team’s fans can be kind of haughty and look down on Ottawa just because they’re a smaller market and fan base. Then they get their knickers in a big twist when they lose to the Sens, so it’s fun for some people to have a go when it happens. Ottawa had a pretty decent record against some east coast teams this season, so this happened quite a bit. It’s usually all in good fun.

The leash will be even shorter considering it's a Canadian market. Alos fun fact: No other Canadian market has missed the playoffs for 7 season in a row since the 05 lockout. Let that sink in.

Sure but it's not that similar. It's more about a passionate fan base that grew up with hockey, than just pure winning (ask the Leafs, who keep getting ejected in round 1, and haven't even won the President's trophy since 1963, and yet still thrive financially). 99% of Arizona citizens have no clue about or couldn't give a crap about hockey (what's ice?), but most in Ottawa do. So the Sens still sell literally 4x as many tickets as Arizona did in the last couple seasons. Will those numbers go down a bit if they keep failing, sure, but never like Arizona. Being the only Canadian team with a 7 year drought is not that surprising given that there's only 7 Canadian teams in the league. Teams like Detroit (which as an Original-6 team is just as hot-headed of an NHL market as Canadian teams) have been out of playoffs for longer, but I think they'll survive!

It’s easy to fix: Step 1: Accept you need to rebuild, trade away best players on expiring deals, ideally getting young prospects/centers to build around. Step 2: draft high, in the 3-5 range, hoping for a top 2 pick but preparing to not get that. Step 3: use those picks to get a franchise winger and center, ideally one who could be captain material. Step 4: by this point, young prospects should be good young players now, and your high draft picks will be great young stars. Now we need to fill out the roster with more veterans. Step 5: trade for/sign a veteran player who is still good, maybe a captain from a rebuilding team who’s looking to go elsewhere. This will help mentor the younger core. Step 5: acquire a legit defenseman via trade, be willing to trade a first/second round pick. Now you should have a solid top 3 d core. Step 6: slightly overpay for a UFA goalie, because they’re tough to predict in the draft, and all high picks were used on forwards and maybe a defenseman or two. I don’t see how you could do this and still miss the playoffs.

ooh this team is in trouble for the next 4 seasons. Im predicting it now. The issue is by then will there be any fans watching this team? They cant do anything big for changes thanks to Dorion and Melnyk. Dorion should have never blown the core up completely from 2016. If they didnt, your top line could have been Tkachuk/Zibanejad/Stone. Second line could have had Grieg(or any other veteran left winger) / Pinto / Batherson. Imagine Chabot still with Demelo, and Sanderson with Karlsson? In goal, wouldnt even matter. All this could have happened if they would have stayed the course and built through the draft. Instead, Dorion blew it all up.

@@lawyerd16 Its a "What if they were all here" state. The Stutzle thing fell on Dorion's lap, so Im not counting Stutzle, because everyone thought and expected that pick would be a late first rounder, not a #3 pick. KArlsson was unbelievable in the 2016 playoffs, and before the start of 2018 season, he was traded, so its immature to say he did not have the same impact upon the trade, considering June 2017, Dorion left his partner Marc Methot unprotected and was picked up by Vegas. So its immature to say if Karlsson wasnt as impactful when his partner was snagged by Vegas, which should not have happened.

@@chrisfortin984 I’d argue Dorion actually drafted pretty well, but there’s no way they get Stutzle if Karlsson stays. I don’t think you’ll get much disagreement that Dorion made a lot of mistakes, but remember who the owner was at that time. He can’t keep players if they won’t pay them the big bucks. This was a time when Alfie had already severed ties with the team as well. I think it’s far too easy for fans to say this or that should’ve happened in that scenario, years after the fact. Of course I still think that they would’ve done better sticking with some of the veterans, but it’s wishful thinking at this point.
