It's a 'theyby': How one Florida family is raising a gender-neutral child

Many parents find out the sex of their child before the baby is born. Others opt for the surprise, waiting to hear, "it's a boy" or 'its a girl."
However, some families are exploring another option by raising a "gender neutral" child, including this Florida family who talked with Liz Crawford about how they make it work.

    And maybe we still do diferentiate "man" and "women" depends on anatomy but we just simply do not push society rules on anyone. We dont push boys to do sports, we support all children to be more sportive or let all children explore what they want. Not teaching one gender that they should do this or that but that everyone can do what they feel like doing. And we teach every child of any gender the same things. Just an idea, maybe. 😂

    What I noticed when I watched a special on a Swedish family raising "Theybies" is an "unconscious bias" to purposefully steer the child towards opposite sex identification. The child, they acknowledged, was biologically a boy. But, the caretaking partner would take the child shopping and light up around dresses and tell the child how pretty the dress was and ask if he wanted it. You could see that his desire to please his parent factored into his willingness to express an interest in the dress. I believe the unconscious bias of these non-binary parents is to steer their children to like and be interested in toys, clothes, and activities generally associated with the opposite sex. Since these parents do know their children's sex, they, perhaps unknowingly, get excited and show preferences for opposite sex activities in an effort to reinforce their belief that gender is fluid. This social experiment is, therefore, already doomed to failure from the moment someone has to change a baby's diaper but wants to push a gender bending agenda.

    She clearly referred to her child as a boy then desperately backtracked when she realised her own clanger!! Her little boy is being used as a social experiment, it’s cruel. I have two sons and I have never forced any particular type of play/colours/pastimes/behaviour etc on them. You can be gender neutral without even thinking about it or spouting about it and certainly without subjecting your child to this sort of lunacy!

    I have 4 girls and one of them would be considered a "Tom boy". She asked me recently if it is ok for girls to play with dinosoars, tools and dirt bikes I said absolutely it is ok! Girls can do anything boys can do. My daughter knows she is a girl because I raised her knowing she is a girl but she still knows that she can play with any toy she likes, wear any clothing she likes and love any colour she likes, can't it just be that simple? Rather than her seeing her genitals and being confused as to why I am asking her to wait and tell me if she is a boy or girl? Children rely on parents to guide them so if I am putting confusion in her head saying I don't know what gender she is and she needs to decide I would imagine that would throw the guidance off and make her question it even more.

    And at some point she forgot about calling the baby "they" and said "he". So, Sparrow is a baby boy living in a family of three women who decided to become gender neutral or what ever they decided to be, but they should not confuse a small child who can't understand about gender or sex yet. The child can decide about his own gender when he is ready, or when it naturally comes to him to choose by himself. So far, for all what I am concerned his anatomy and chromosomes says that he is a boy or a male if you prefer. They, in fact, have chosen the gender for the baby already by determining that the baby is 'they' - that should be an 'it' since 'they' is plural, by the way.

  • @Gomba13
    @Gomba132 жыл бұрын

    In a Good Morning Britain interview, Ari speaks of childism: not allowing a child to choose who they are by infantilizing them. That's when I had enough of this nonsense. Ari says that since a toddler has no idea about gender identity, it's not okay to choose a gender for them (conveniently glossing over the fact that the kid has genitals and has a sex either way). So Ari forced Sparrow to NOT have a gender, until such time as Sparrow is ready to choose one, if ever. I am sorry, Ari, but that is just as much childism as treating your child as the gender that corresponds to their sex. I would even say it is child abuse, because you are teaching your child to disregard what's between their legs, as though that were not part of who they are. I was born female. I always knew I was a little girl. But I was also not forced any gender roles upon, which left me free to be both genders, or even to not have one, which is pretty much how I felt most of the time as a child: I was merely a child, not a girl or a boy. I wish I could go back to those days, things were so much more simple. This is what Ari has taken away from Sparrow, this very brief period of life where you don't have to worry about anything. So because I was merely a child, I was allowed to wear whatever colour I liked (never wore pink), to wear skirts or pants, to play with dolls or hand tools, etc. Now that I am an adult, I know that I was born female, I have female biological characteristics and I am fine with that. I am fine with being called she/her, it is what I was always called. And I am non binary, because I was not forced any gender roles upon. I am a non binary female (as in I have female sex characteristics) who is perfectly fine keeping her traditional pronouns, and I am also heterosexual. No amount of misgendering me can ever change that, because I know that that's who I am, and so I don't care if I get misgendered. I am just as much a woman as I am a man, and I feel perfectly comfortable with that. I was able to come to that conclusion-without being forced to "explore gender" (Ari's words) as a toddler. I was just allowed to be, accepted for who I was, along with my genitals. That is how I NATURALLY came to the conclusion as an adult that I am both genders. Ari is keeping Sparrow from learning to live with the original genitals as part of Sparrow. That to me is nothing short of child abuse. That is also making a child believe that they can be whomever they choose to be, when the reality is that you can't be whom you choose to be. No one consciously chooses who they are, everyone becomes who they always had the potential to be and realize who they are some time in late adolescence. Ari is impeding that potential in Sparrow. If Sparrow is meant to be non binary as an adult, Sparrow can come to that conclusion without being forced to be preoccupied with it as a GODDAMN TODDLER. It is PERSONAL and none of the parents' business. There is a form of child abuse called adultification. That is what this is, troubling the mind of a kid with stuff that kids are not ready to deal with. Another form of child abuse is projection. That is what this is, projecting the parents' gender identities onto the child. It is no different from heterosexual parents denying their son for being gay. Both types of abuse are characteristic of narcissistic parents. That kid's childhood is being robbed from them, and it might have grave psychological consequences once that child is an adult. These people are enmeshed and have serious boundary issues. If Ari wants to accuse people of childism, no need to look any farther than a mirror: Sparrow is being childified by Ari and the rest of the family.

As to trans people, two thirds of people who feel they are another gender actually revert to their birth gender, so don’t be hasty. I wonder if it could be (even just a little bit) confirmation bias. . ? Ari's non-binary themself, so there could be an intrinsic (maybe subconscious) hope for a non-binary baby? 🤷🏾‍♀️ I've seen darker-skin parents of lighter-skin kids and during the summer, the kids spend more time outside and get tan. But the parents never come right out and say, "Oh now you're dark like me!" No, they say things like, "You look so pretty in that dress!" Same dress the kid wore last spring, when she'd gone all winter with no sun, and the parents didn't say that then. But suddenly she's the same color as her parents, and now they're all like "Let's get a picture together while you're all dressed up so pretty!" Yeah I notice this stuff, because I'm a foster kid. I mean I hope it's not projection in Sparrow's family. But most parents do crave seeing something of themselves in their children, even my own parents did -- even though it wouldn't make sense for us to share immutable traits. But still there's this *_feeling_* which they (and I) feel, when some stranger says, "You have your mom's smile!"

    I watched another video about these folks on good morning Britain and they mentioned that one of their children decided that they were non-binary at 4ish. They said that they had grown up around the LGBTQ+ community and that made them more open to their option. That’s all fine and do as you do, doesn’t bother me, but if the kids parents were totally immersed in the LGBTQ+ community which would mean their children were too, then I don’t think, as far as I know, that they were very aware of the heterosexual community which would mean I don’t think they were given a true and fair chance to make a complete decision on their own. If you want your child to completely make their own choice on this topic, shouldn’t you let your child be around and fully aware of ALL aspects of the gender debate?

    I hope these children grow up happy and successful. HOWEVER, Hazel was *five* when they started listing genders to her and "Demi-Girl" sounds like a superhero (like Elasti-Girl). Of course, the kid is going to choose that (as opposed something more clinical sounding like antegender or cisgender girl). Then, the parents reinforce that expressed extra-special "identity" by treating them as such - not as a cisgender girl but as a demi-girl (to do otherwise, in the words of this person to Pierce Morgan, is "childist".) Parents need to lead the way, not children. I really hope this social experiment with kids does not become a prominent trend. The kids are going to end up so confused.

Yet, they aren’t extremes, they are the societal norms & you are using using those norms male / female (two genders / sides of the “spectrum”) as the basis for your “gender identity”. But then you claim there are a verity of genders that don’t identity as either. If you don’t see the endless contradictions in this social pseudo-science, you’re either willfully stupid or dishonest. This person is actively pushing this on her kids which will only confuse them as they grow up and create social and mental problems for them. And, Sparrow is a boy. We all heard you say it. Stop the social experiments on your kids and love them for who and what they are; this includes their birth sex/gender. There is biological sex & gender stereotypes. That’s it.
