What I like about gawad is his composure he(as far as I judge from his matches) is silent, no disputing the decision of referee, just concentrating on his next throw. And faragh is an equal opponent and a gentleman player

While he's not quite on the same level, there's a bit of Shabana to Gawaad when he's playing this well.

Gawad is the only person that is likely to beat Farag consistently these days. (Like I posted at the start of this tournament.) Gawad keeps the ball tight on all the rallies regardless of length robbing Farag of his normal bread and butter points. It's not that Farag is playing any worse than normal it is merely the consistent tight quality work Gawad applies keeps Farag from winning. In addition anything loose Gawad will deceptively play in two dimensions. First he'll set up so he has the option to play it either way so if Farag is out of position he'll get the point. Secondly if Farag is not out of position Gawad will alternate his deceptive options to keep Farag always guessing. Also the judges were good! Usually the judges suck. They suck so badly I often think they've been paid to throw matches. However, on this game, they judged fairly. Maybe we should pay the judges huge bonuses when they judge fairly?! Finally, Gawad was obviously going to win because his shoe colors were far far superior to Farag!

I agree with you but I think Farag was definitely playing worse here today. As Joey said he was just giving it a 'pat' and was playing quite defensively and he was already nervous so... then again I think Gawad would still have won. This is the best I've seen a player since Rosner Dubai 2017 or Ramy Ashour last year...

@@damandarin5415 Joey certainly knows his stuff, is fantastic, and must go off and contemplate for hours to come off with the insight he casually understates with... However, in this scenario wasn't it Gawad who exerted such extreme pressure with his endless tight long-lines and cross-courts that suppressed Farag? In other words I think if Farag were to have played anybody else he wouldn't have been just "patting" the ball and playing defensively. The focus should have been on Gawad's great play instead of wondering how to get Farag into the game...

Gawad played really well. Farag doesn't put enough pace on at times and is a little loose when he's working his opponent. But still no 2 in the World!! Fair enough. Who am I to talk ?? 😊

Note to the commentators -- Farag's movement at around 13:50 doesn't constitute 'turning' under the rules. I assume the 'Yes let' decision was because the referee thought that Gawad *might* have cleared adequately (but played a let for safety reasons)

At 16:22 I don't really understand why that was a Stroke and the call at 13:52 was a Let. I thought they'd both be Lets since the player swapped sides in both instances...is the turning rule purely down to the player actually spinning 360 or something more complex?

I know no one game is representative of a player's entire style/approach to the game but Farag really didn't seem to be attacking as much as he normally does... could just gawads defense/deep shots but seemed like farag didn't quite know what to do here.

The pros play with a pretty solid rubber ball which needs warming up to get the bouncy / fast feeling. The fastness also depends on the court too...

20:00 stroke to gawad. I don't think that was a stroke. Gawad put himself in that position and farag played a good shot. He was pushed into the line of the ball. Correct me if I am wrong please.

i would agree with you, but there's no secret that gawad seemed to benefit from many close decisions by the video referees in this tournament. if you watch the slo-mo replay carefully you can see that initially gawad has his racquet in front of his body and then as he moves into the shot his racquet is in front of farag, and when he realises he might not be able to reach the ball he quickly takes his racquet back behind farag's body, which is a pretty blatant effort to get a stroke. generally the guideline is that if the player has his racquet up and is unable to move it forward to the ball, then his stroke is being "prevented" and he is entitled to a stroke, whereas if there is contact when he takes the racquet back, then his stroke is merely being "affected" and he will only be entitled to a let. in practise, players sometimes manipulate their racquet position such that it is behind the other player's body, simply so that they can get a cheap stroke. it can be very hard for a referee to distinguish whether the player is truly prevented from striking the ball or whether he is "fishing" for the stroke, so in many cases this uncertainty will lead the referee to call a stroke. farag could have avoided the situation by playing a different shot, or by playing the same shot more accurately, which is probably why he didn't complain. if he had played the ball a little higher and left it shorter, he would not have been in the way and gawad would have been stuck in front, and farag would have remained in control of the situation. hope that helps ...
