It is Impossible to Tell If Anything is Good or Bad - Alan Watts

The Story of the Chinese Farmer told by Alan Watts. Many things happen in life they may seem terrible in the moment. You lost your job, you got dumped, you didn't get into the right school, etc. However, later on that event, which seemed so bad, turned out to change your life course and lead you to something positive. It is impossible to tell if anything that happens is "good" or "bad". They key is to flow like water through rocks. Be adaptive, especially to events that are outside of your control. Don't get hung up on any one thing. Many of the most successful people credit their lowest failures for their ultimate success. Sometimes it takes a very negative event to push us to make a positive change.

2 years ago I had a broken heart. I took all the energy that I focused on her and channeled it into creating this youtube channel. When one door closes, another one opens. I've learned not to get too hung up on any one thing. Instead, I think of myself like water flowing through rocks.

I dreamed for many years of owning a van to live and travel in. Finally I found a job, saved up, bought an old mercedes van, fixed it up, and it was stolen within 2 days of getting it insured and on the road. But when people commiserate, I say that perhaps this has saved me from a nasty, possibly fatal accident 6 months down the road. You just can't know. You had to turn left when you wanted to turn right? In the end, it doesn't matter, just as long as you're still rolling along :-)

Alan Watts story says to me, you never can really know if any event in your life is good or bad because life is an ongoing process, where no end state of goodness or badness is achieved. So a 'good' event might lead to a tragic outcome or a 'bad' event might turn out to be lucky for some unforseen reason. It just never stops evolving so why judge the present moment as good or bad when it is only part of a continuum? If I can't tell if it's good or bad, can I really say that good and bad even exist? Only the present moment is real. Things can only be real in the present moment. Good and bad are relative terms, like it's good for me or mine. It's always good to have more people on the planet, until there are so many that we start to choke. At what point does what was good become not so good anymore? The end of humanity on earth is certainly bad, right? Well maybe…

A little over three years ago I fell off a cliff and broke my legs, my dominate wrist, and a few other minor fractures. I was told, "That sucks. What will you do for work?" And a lot bad what-ifs. A few close friends said, "Lucky you can still move, or didn't die." I (23 at the time) had to spend six weeks in a nursing home. So many said, "How can you be relaxed, happy, or nonchalant about what happened?" I would reply, "These event has taught me to manage my pride. It has taught me to be patient. Not to take things like walking for granted. It has taught me that life is too short to be upset about things that I cannot change. This event just happened; I do not know if the repercussions will be good, or bad. But I know there will be a small amount of both." (I would say something similar to that, not that exact anyway) Because of my fall, I a more humble. Because of my fall, I limp and have aches. Because of my fall, the doctors found a rare appendix cancer. My appendix was twice the normal size. If it would have burst, cancerous cells would have been sent through out my abdomen. I would have had a few miserable, painful years to live Because of my fall, I can tell when barometric pressure changes, and a coming storm or cold. Because of my fall, I was able to take steps toward a career that I have been working at for a year and a half. We cannot afford to let things get in our way and drag us down. There is good and bad in almost every action out there. We just have to look for it. I may not be easy, but it can be hiding there. But we also cannot afford to skip over the small things. Take time out of your day to just sit down and enjoy the sky. Let yourself get lost in the cosmos and see that the world is so very complex, but also so small. Take time to tell your friends you love them. Take time to forgive an enemy. But you don't have to forget. Know, that it is okay to cry. Joy, sadness, stress and anger. Know, that life will be hard. But it will also be enjoyable. Know, that time will go by in the blink of an eye. What seems like a huge road block now, years down the line can be forgotten, or seem so small now. But also know, that the memories that you take with your, in your journey through time and life, this will always be with you. A memory is like hitting pause. Even for a moment, and you can find peace.

I always find myself returning to this story... it brings much peace. In the city I currently live in it applies a lot. 🤔Though I do not claim to be "right" and my perception may be off, where I'm living, people have a very acute tendency to change their minds on things. To me, it becomes very difficult to get things done because others have a very nonchalant kind of way about how they "go about things"... often not even completing the project we set out to accomplish! Seems to be they're running on their own individual clock and individual life instead of working together fairly and being on "our clock" together as one (if that makes sense). So every time I try to get wheels in motion to do something in my line of work, often the people who I'm intertwined with and working with suddenly back off or abandon plans you made. Naturally, that's immensely frustrating, but it's not like I can control that a whole lot when that happens. So trying to work with people of that nature? Saying "MAYBE" and letting other people set the course seems like the right trajectory. You can say, "maybe" because you know trying to force someone into something isn't fun or appealing. You can say "maybe" because you know you're already content with life as is here and now and the people who leave you hanging like I'm describing can't bring you down or affect your own inner peace / happiness. Thank you for uploading this! :) ...MAYBE. LOL :)

The biggest difference between humans and animals is that humans have the ability to make decision what is good what is bad. Any act we do is either good or bad. Any action any time u have done in ur life was a decision uv made between good or bad. U only improve when u do good things. More good u doo more u see the benefits it in ur own life. I have experienced that. The world is intelligent. Is it god or it is the world’s brain i dont know. I just know doing good is what humans are supposed to do.

If we think according to nature and to preserve our life. Then we can make a little basis on how to continue with life. And then if we keep making rules on the basis of what will be good for our species (and presumably other species too). Then we should add things like consequences, justice, equality and stuff.

Yes you can know whats good or bad, u just cant see the whats the outcome of your immediate actions because it takes a long time for reaction to come back to you. For example if you start doing heavy drugs, it feels good for some long period of time like a year or two, but after that you start seeing your health gets destroyed, job lost, and life destroyed, and then you see it. It was bad!

Those are easy because no one was really hurt. If the horse had killed his son or the officer had raped his wife, saying 'maybe' means you're being amoral and don't really care. But to be moral, one must care. When you're indifferent, then, yeah, it is impossible to tell if anything is good or bad.

Despite the argument with the consequences of good or bad fortune, a deeper case can be made. That which is good, is only good for me, which can simultaneously also be bad for anybody else. The real virtue of ethics lies in not being egoistic but thinking about others. But it is important to point out that this form of altruistic morality can divert a persons mind, if that person goes as far as valuing its own live less than the lives of others. The truth is that, although general well being in a utilitarian sense is useful and intuitive, the first priority is supposed to be oneself. Because the only thing you can be sure of is our own existence, (as Descartes explained) our own experience and our own desire to tend to happiness and well being and avoid suffering and misery (as Sigmund Freund explained). If this is satisfied sufficiently for the ego, only then is it really healthy to care about others. Ethics is really important. I would even argue more important than science or knowledge. And I say this as someone who studies physics at university, who loves Richard Dawkins and Carl Sagan, so who is a total science enthusiast. But the following thought experiment will prove my radical point: Assume humanity has progressed so far that we have conquered the entire galaxy, with entire civilizations real futuristic on planets and moons. With spaceships and technology unimaginable to us now, but with which we can achieve everything we want, move everything we want, have the most convenient life, and gain the answers to every question. Sounds idealistic. But our psyche will be the same. We will still have the same deep urge to find meaning in life, the same existential worries in our primal brain. What then? What will we do when all our wishes are accomplished? More wishes? So what then if these again are satisfied? Is there an end to this or is it just an endless ever repeating cycle? Ethics addresses the deep fundamental questions of what contributes to a happy and fulfilled live. Of what makes a good life. Lets go even further and say that in this utopia world we are however deeply oppressed, with no freedoms or right, and suffer for eternity. What is suddenly more important: All the science, technology and knowledge? Or to get the hell out of that hellish state? The number one priority in life is to life well. It is to life in abstinence of suffering, oppression, depression, fear and misery. Getting rid of that, not just for oneself but also for every human, should be the first priority in life. Injustice can't live forever. We get outraged at sights of injustice and needless torture, or murder. Only in a world free of oppression, suffering and misery, can scientific advancement progress, giving rise to technology and knowledge. The latter is only possible if you are mentally free of suffering, misery and only if you have the freedom to inquire, question everything. Here again ethics plays a role because freedom of speech and opinion is a fundamental human right. But ethical justice applies not only to human, but also to animals. But not the animals living in the wild nature doing their thing evolution designed them to do, but the innocent animals we keep in factory farms and slaughterhouses. The animals we forcefully enslave, exploit, murder and torture for something completely unnecessary like meat, which causes global warming in the process and only makes us obese and gives us heart disease in consumption. Ethics is the single most important field of study and Intuition that needs to be studied and acted out in ones own life. I can recommend watching the documentary dominion, but also earthling eds videos. On the philosophy of ethics I highly recommend researching KZread videos explaining the ethics of Aristotle, Jeremy Bentham/ John Stuart Mill, Immanuel kant, David Hume, Arthur Schopenhauer and that of Sam Harris.

In Chinese, this is actually an idiom: 塞翁失馬,焉知非福 (lit. "Saiwong loses his horse. How do you know if it's bad?" Saiwong is the old man's name.) I guess whether something is good or bad is just our own definition or our own feeling towards it.
