The Slow Poison of Endless Fantasy

A young knight with a bright future is enticed by a spirit that has the ability to show him whatever vision he wants to see. The visions are more captivating than his sword training, his friends, the village girls and life itself. These seemingly small, harmless distractions end up costing the young knight the ultimate price - His potential.

Also, why make it harder for yourself by lamenting? Time spent having fun is not lost, it's enjoyed and hopefully a good memory. Also, not everyone is destined to be a "great hero". Actually, no one is, there are no prophecies and no dragons and no real demons. There are just good people where it's a shame when they waste their talents. And probably bad people where it's really good when they don't become great leaders and shit. More porn for highly motivated bad people I say!

@@KnokkelmanI agree that there isn't any of those fantasy elements of the story in reality. And that destiny doesn't exist, we're not entitled to anything in life. But how you spend your time does matter, and you can definitely regret the time you spend seeking, and enjoying pleasures. Also, there is no such thing as good and bad people. People and things can only be good or bad in relation to something. Someone can be bad at leading in some, or many ways. That can overall make for an ineffective leader. But a person can never be "bad". Some people may often behave in harmful ways, but that isn't because they're inherently bad. Such villains only exist in fantasy.

I'm in my 50s now, and I'll never get the years back that I wasted immersed in those three vices. I say to anyone just starting out, quit your unhealthy addictions now before they cause more harm. They will take over your life if you're not careful. Get out there, make friends, find a partner, find a career, find your purpose.

Now it hurts to almost be 30 and have no chance of it. The dissatisfaction/sadness grows each year. For anyone younger, just really do everything you can. I don't want anyone else to suffer from this. Its cliche but give it your all and at least you know you gave it your best if it doesn't work out. Working on just doing whatever you want to achieve day in day out is the only way to even possibly get there. I realized this too late. All the best

I came up with a technique that helps me fight off addictive things, hopefully you find it useful also. Basically lets say its junk food, i think people usually resist it by thinking about how good it is and then forcing themselves not to give in to the temptation. I've found its easier to just not think about how good it is in the first place, whenever you feel that thought coming up, just redirect before it has a chance to grab your attention. I believe it is possible to be given a source of pleasure and reject it, imagine you bite into some junk food and you are then presented with the option to enjoy the taste, or not. I think we automatically say yes to that, so much so that we dont even notice that there is the option. I think if you just say no, I'm not going to enjoy that, and you ignore internally the pleasure it gives you, that means the next time the addiction isn't as strong. Works for me, dunno if it'll work for you but hopefully it does

The grass is always greener on the other side. Nobody is as happy they look, there is always sacrifice. I’m sure you have meant some really great friends that you would have not meant if you took a different path, also gained different skills. Life is also chaos, You might have died in a car crash at 23 if you drove that night going to a extraverted party. Videos like these contradict sayings like ‘be thankful of what you have’, knowledge deepens regret, too much information is toxic. Most people before the internet did not have too much knowledge and information, they were happy enough being the housewife in their White House with the white picket fence and the husband going to a mid job, day in and day out. Our enemy is social media including influencers, this enemy cultivates a culture of American hyper individualism where they tell you that ‘average’ is the enemy

addiction / distraction / escape doesn’t arise out of nothing. it’s caused by a lack of healing. we all have a lot to heal in ourselves and our relationships. a healthy person doesn’t prefer escape over real life. for a healthy person, real life is safe, affirming, supportive, challenging, inspiring, and fun. we don’t need to regret being unhealed - that’s just more of the same. the real problem isn’t distraction. it’s believing there’s something wrong with us that we need to fix. we just need to step out of that illusion and remember who we really are.

Or maybe it's the other way around. A healthy person needs escapism because the world is so insane they can't handle it 24/7. Only people living in good conditions in rich countries with all basic plus many more needs met would say that real life is safe, affirming, supportive etc. For the vast majority of the world's population, it's not. Maybe it's not the escapist people who are sick, but the insane systems and twisted culture that made the world like that. I prefer real life but there's also a limit to how much bs or just s I can take and the world forces A LOT of them on you.

I get the parable, but I've been immersing myself in fantasy my entire life (books, movies, games, video games, roleplaying, etc.), and still managed to have an awesome career that's the subject of lots of other people's fantasies, plus a great marriage, financial success, and a generally wonderful life. And I still spend most of my free time immersed in fantasy, usually hours a day. (And isn't it great to have the kind of life that affords me such leisure time?) In fact, I probably wouldn't have my awesome career if not for inspirations from fantasy and other fiction. Indulgence in fantasy sounds like a convenient scapegoat here. Neglecting the things you need to do in life is bad, no matter what your excuse is. But it's no more harmful to spend your time rolling dice and pretending to be an elf (if that's your thing) than to spend the same time rebuilding classic cars, or woodworking, or working in a flower garden, or a million other "more practical" or "more productive" pursuits. I know people who have no impractical interests. They consider anything that isn't grounded in immediate reality, that they (and most people) wouldn't consider practical and productive, to be a waste of time, and look at those who engage in such things with derision. And despite spending all their time on practicalities, they're no more successful than I, and no more happy. (Some of them do save more money because they do their own electrical work and plumbing, but those are expenses I can easily afford without negatively impacting my quality of life, so they can keep it and I'll enjoy my encyclopedic knowledge of Tolkien's mythology.) So if fantasy makes you happy, don't cut it out because some animated parable told you it was harmful. It's not. The character in the story didn't run into problems because he indulged in fantasy. He ran into problems because he neglected his goals and aspirations (and apparently his job, if he was supposed to be the village's defender). He could have just as easily neglected those things because he was chasing the village girls, or took up fishing in the local stream, or developed a gambling habit, or a drinking problem, or a million other things that have nothing to do with fantasy. And since we're talking about fantasy, let me give you a relevant quote from the 2000 historical fantasy film Gladiator: "Sometimes I do what I want to do. The rest of the time, I do what I have to." As long as you're doing what you have to, there's nothing wrong with doing what you want to as well. So if you enjoy fantasy, go right ahead. Just don't neglect what you have to do in life.

It's amazing how true this story is. I used to do nothing but work my job, and then come home and watch a bunch of let's play content. It became a habit for me to do that, over and over again. This led me to fall behind in my hobbies, which required a good deal of concentration and practice. That falling behind led to me rediscovering a lack of self worth that I used to have a long time ago. It led me to have self created conflicts with my family, friends, and girlfriend. It wasn't a happy time. As I grew tired and unsatisfied with that cycle, I eventually decided to clean up my house. Best decision I ever made, because it would spark emotions of self worth that would cause me to not only clean my house, but practice my hobbies again (funny enough, one of which is swordplay) and get my GED. It's fine to indulge yourself with entertainment every once in a while, but when you start to see more value in something so easy and not related to your physical life, it becomes a problem. Unwarranted self indulgence is a slippery slope, regardless of the subject matter. We call it instant gratification these days.

@@irrevenant3 The addiction in the story is not a substance, not that coffee is a controlled substance anyway. The addiction comes from within, slothfulness--becoming a watcher instead of a doer. The protagonist grows bitter and angry seeing people pass him up in life as he continues to dwell solely on the images the ghost shows him. I don't know anon here, but so this is pure conjecture--but bringing up coffee when we're talking about something actually debilitating is downplaying the addiction. Perhaps, anon feels guilty. I would guess that "coffee" is code for something actually debilitating in anon's life that he would like not to confront. A problem must first be recognized before it can be confronted.

Best one yet. On the surface, you can say this is about media and over stimulation but on a deeper note, it’s about how instant gratification can destroy one’s life. The ending was the best, when the knight asked if he could watch the fantasy one more time. He still had options. He could’ve chosen to fight the evil, or even run away, or do anything else but still chose to cling onto the fantasy.

He gained a bad reputation by not really going to training or socializing with the villagers. There’s a fine line between “escaping into fantasy” and “enjoying fantastical art,” and the line is drawn on productivity and self control. If you can have a productive day and complete what needs to be done (including work on what will get you where you want to be), then there’s nothing wrong with enjoying “fantasy” (whether that be books, movies, video games etc.) in your free time.

That really hit the feels because many times I've felt I have squandered potential and opportunities. I guess avoiding distractions, delusions of grandeur and actually focusing on your work will push you closer to the person you're truly meant to be, rather than fantasize a fake future version of yourself...because we truly don't know what the best version of us looks like, we just have no idea and he/she might have different outlooks on life and different style compared to what we envision. It's best to stay focused, do what's necessary, stick to good habits, take things a day at a time and just let life take it's course. A good outlet for fantasies would be getting into creative writing as a hobby. It will help you understand that those fantasies aren't real, but at the same time, they don't have to go to waste. Keeps the fantasies alive, but still helps us stay present in reality. Thank you for sharing this video!

Just in the past few years, I’ve watched the light inside me grow dimmer and dimmer. To say I have shrunk spiritually is an understatement. But it all ends in the same never ending miserable cycle as this video. At the bottom of the barrel of my life, the only thing left between the pit of despair wasn't a mindset, achievement, or pleasure, it was those I loved. Then after even they couldn't help me, God did. He saved me from myself and changed my life. Find out who Jesus really is. The one who loved you so much He willingly died on the cross for your mistakes. The one who has a plan for you with purpose, meaning and love. And I highly reccomend watching some delafe testimonies or ask cliff videos, they helped me come to understand and believe when I was agnostic/nhilistic. And learn what it means to get born again (John 3:3) May God bless you my friend. I pray for your recovery and life.

daydreaming has always been a part of me for so long. i use it as a coping mechanism to avoid feeling any distress in life. i would create a whole different life in my head where i become this fierce, clever person who seems to have everything together and achieve anything that i desire. but even when i realized hiding in my fantasy castle is not the healthy way to deal with pain, i was reluctant to combat against it. this video hit me hard cuz turn out, the fantasy i create in my head is far more detrimental than i thought. it deceives me to think that i already have what i want to pursuit and take away the motivation to do the required tasks in order to achieve my goals. maybe it is the reason why i haven’t become the person that i want to be. it’s scary that i actually see myself in this knight, starting off with the potential to become great but slowly drowning in his own fantasy world. my favourite thing to do is laying on my bed and dreaming all sort of things just like what the ghost did to the knight.

the first day after watching this video, i was so terrified that i literally stopped daydreaming. but in the second day, i started making conscious decision on when and what to fantasize about. i know it will be a long battle and the initial step for me is to gain some sense of control over this habit. whenever a fantasy slip into my mind, i would ask myself whether i want to continue with this. most of the time the answer is no, but then there were also times that i said yes to myself and keep on fantasizing for a moment of two. but it was brief. maybe there’s something about conscious decision that help shorten the time of each episode. and that way, i don’t judge myself every time i choose to fantasize. it was awesome to live in present. i feel like i do more when i’m not busy building my imaginary world. today i had a meaningful conversation with my friends and i could feel how excited they were talking to me. and for me, that’s a small win to help me keep going

Looks like maladaptive daydreaming (i had it too) but now i started therapy and i don't daydream anymore. (Sometimes unintentionally it happens, doesn't last more than 5 min) The key is, you've to be aware and know your mind is playing trick on you. I've wasted years of my life, seen failures because of this daydreaming and social media. Now I'm finally becoming free. I too have long way to go. Be aware, you and your mind is not the same thing. This speaks to me on a deep level in my current internal struggle, but I have found the answer forward recently. We are tought to be analytical and logical in an illogical complex world. We gravitate toward fantasy as an out. Only to grow distain for our reality, as the fantasy world becomes favorable. Then you learn of cosmic horrors.. and in an odd way, you favored this reality as apposed to the horror of the fiction. Eventually you realize life is a dream, a gift given to us by chance or by the devine. The why and how we are here is beyond human logic. So here's the beauty of it. Do as you please. All you do will be destroyed and this world will come to and end. You only matter if you hold on to a sense of importance.

This story had no happy ending because it doesn't show the part where our hero realizes that he holds the key to his own prison and can change! When your problem is coming from outside, it is difficult to change, but if you are your problem, then you can change that with a little effort. I would know; my story was similar in that I was the one slowly killing my spirit. Don't let this story get you down. You may not choose the circumstances within your life, but you are free to choose how you react. I am still learning to control my reactions even in spite of how my emotions make me feel. And this video, frankly, added to the hurt. At the same time, I can't really blame anyone other than myself for being here. All of that said, no matter how depressing this realization has been, it has also served as a "kick in the ass" and motivation to get myself out of where I'm at and to where I want to be. I've been reading a lot of the comments with this video. A lot of people want to change their lives for the better. However lots of times people are just directionless. The very first thing that you can do, if anything, is the start taking care of your body by going to your local gym. You can put all of your energy into transforming the human body that your spirit lives in. As you spend more time focusing on your own health, you will find yourself spending less time doing unhealthy things. This is especially true once you start dropping weight. As you start dropping weight you'll notice your energy is starting to increase. This will only happen if you were eating correctly as well. Because there are many people that can drop weight but they can do it in an unhealthy fashion like crash dieting or eating disorders. However when you drop weight through exercise and proper dieting, you will find your energy increasing and this energy increase will allow you to expand your mental horizons and doing other things. You see when you are overweight your mind is compromised. You don't see yourself doing very much in life. But the moment that your body begins to actually get healthier, your mind expands. once you expand your mental horizons then you will actually envision better things for yourself and with proper willpower you will actually engage in those things. Always keep a couple of things in mind 1. action leads to more action 2. If you want different results in life you must stop doing the same thing. The moment you do something you will literally get a different the result. (This applies for goals, not for making somebody fall in love with you) I hope this helps you.

To be honest, this video will not change you at all. Don't get me wrong, but motivation is not enough .. if you don't realize step by step what you were doing wrong, then this video is useless for u. same like with smoke addiction unless you want to quit smoking, you will do so today, but who smokes cigarettes they all now about it bad effects, but they still smoke. Video more focusing on younger generation I guess. I like it when they talk about porn addiction, everyone like porn/romantic movies, but it could be a problem if you don't control it.. and I think not all people will be affected by this "slow poison", a lot of it will depend on personality and circumstances. People generally already decide what is better for them, so wherever the outcome is, they will take it. For example lets say you have extra weight and no one tells you that is wrong cos people don't want to fatshame someone, well at this case you end up being fat and die in 60-70 from cancer or ect. For sure, at the end of your path, you be like, " I wish someone would tell me that," but it's bullshit! Even when someone from the side tells you about your problems, you take his word as from the enemy. Overall, you become who you want to be, and if you have a feeling you want to be something else, well, think carefully cos you a "delusional person." You didn't like the outcome and trying to back up, TOO LATE! take what you deserve and move forward. Some decisions in your life are not reversible. Your decision made you that person who you are right now, so why would you be someone else? For sure we not always have choose or know it and that is part of problem and that's why we are who we are. Overall, that's why some parents are strict to they own kids so those can become better version of themselves in later life, and what kids do? right, they will not list them for most of the time unless they realize that one day, parents were telling truths, but it could be too late. (Parents nowadays are like "lets make our kids be transgender Yayy!" Not realizing how it will damage kid in long run)

@@tangbein well, if it is any consolation, I wasted my 20s too. To be fair, I didn’t have kids until I was well into my 30s. However, I’m unable to provide the kind of life for them that I’d like to. The “prolonged adolescence” of my 20s led to a delayed start to my career, credit card debt, and now despite the fact that I’m finally making a decent amount of money, that decade of delay cost me the ability to own a home since housing costs and inflation have skyrocketed. In a lot of ways, I feel like I missed the boat and my kids are going to miss out because of it.

It's as if it was a reminder... and the fact that I'm watching it through the same ''seeing spirit'' that showed me all those fantasies is the icing on the cake... Shit, man, how many of us kept watching those mirages instead of living our destiny the way it should've/could've/would've be lived if we were only strong enough to refuse to fool ourselves with illusions... Replace the word fantasy with dream and the message becomes quite sinister here. Your dream will seem like fantasy to others, and they will implore you to give up by telling you that you're delusional, and your dream is nothing but a fantasy. They'll tell you you're destined for great things when you are a child, but when you are grown that optimism becomes pessimistic jealousy, and we all know misery loves company.

Yeah, it's a very moving story. Personally I do think that at its core, achievement is a matter of vpersonal commitment, rather than of responsibility and discipline. Those are byproducts of the former, with regards to particular acts and/or or results. I do think it's telling how the women were presented as a reward to leading a disciplined life. The story somwehat fetishizes personal responsibility, as it objectivies women. Was the hero really seduced and distracted by an evil spirit, or simply not inspired and motivated enough to devote to and focus on a particularly useful skill?

Had he been more disciplined and responsible, commitment to actual heroism would've grown. It's discipline what beats "I just don't feel like doing it today". Also, I don't see where the women were anywhere a reward, as the pornographic fantasies were an obstacle to any reward he could've gotten and the women were already interested in him before he even got into training. So if there was a reward for his training, it would've been a saved village.

I agree. I have a story about that. They say the best time to learn a second language is to be taught as a child. Studies show that is is vastly more difficult to learn one as an adult. As a child i refused to learn Spanish as o thought speaking it sounded embarrassing. As i grew older, took Spanish in high school, i realized the long road ahead of me and gave up. Although i excelled in the classes, the reality of what it would take to learn it at my late teens settled in, and i regretted not learning as a child. In my mind, there was nothing i could do but accept that i grew up latino but didn’t speak spanish. 8 years passed since I then got a job as a flight attendant. For a 6 month period, there was a point where all i did was flights to San Juan puerto rico. I said “fuck it, why not try to use what i learned in high school to speak to these people and help them.” I did that, downloaded a Spanish dictionary app, spoke, went back, referenced my dictionary, spoke again, went home and critiqued my own conversations. I even started watching videos to make sure i got down the grammar of spaniah. Over 6 months, without me noticing, my fear of conversing in spanish and embarassing myself faded. I iumped into every conversation i could. I stuttered, said embarrassing things without knowing, and was even told by some to “just speak english.” I realized that i had to stop caring. I continued until today. Now i am writing this on my way hone from colombia. I had all kinds of conversations out here. many with fluency, and some where I embarrassed myself. At work, people now ask me to help passengers who only speak spanosh, and not only can i speak, but i sound like a native and in some instances, speak as fast as some. I am now 28. Over the past two years i managed to learn a second language in my adulthood. So all i can say is, cody, i agree with you. It is not too late for things to change.

But, if you find relief only from these addictions, it becomes really bad to get back to the normal mode (I used to be hooked to the computer once upon a time. Now, I realize that it was a bad idea). May all of us find peace and happiness. Edit: it's never easy to get away from any addiction. Sometimes, it's always there, but with lots of patience and stubbornness, you can gain some control over your addiction and perhaps even overcome it completely.

Kids need to be kids and think like lil kids do don’t pressure life onto them if anything that’s the parents job even tho they gave them a phone at a young age which is bad kids need to keep their minds on play time cuz this will be the only chapters in their life where they are most happy and pure don’t reveal what it’s like to grow up nowadays cuz it’s wrong and sad and we the adults are still tryna make it better let the kids be kids until it’s time for them to see imo middle school should be the earliest to see this and high schools just because it will make them think cuz they’re at a point they need to lil kids don’t need to worry about this yet they’re kids they just need to be happy and have fun and the phones don’t help cuz it’s showing a lot of fake they can get easily influenced by

tbh... that soulless vacant eye spirit is creepy af. All the rest seems tame.

The chilling part is that the spirit in the story is essentially just a smart phone.

I'm glad i found this video. I also have fallen victim to fantasizing glory over working towards achieving my goals. Often times putting in the work is hard and boring so i use my imagination to create fantasies- as a way of escapism - ignoring the work i have at hand and thus creating stress and anxiety for myself when i eventually have to get to it. From this video, I understand now the harm I'm causing to myself. My takeaway message would be to work on improving myself and not allow fantasies and other distractions to take me away from my work(the process) Overindulgence is disastrous.

It’s fun to fantasise about doing good things, it’s a way of living our dreams without putting in hard work, but at the end of the day dreaming of something will never be as good as having it as a reality. So if you can make it reality work for that.

i was just thinking about writing a children's story on how the bad guys in life will often portray themselves as the good guys until it is too late. meanwhile the good guys are not always nice, making it easy for a young person to think they're the bad guy. thanks for this, i'm getting to work on it knowing time is never on my side, only my own will and the danger of not letting my message be heard by many.
