Bill Skarsgard (who played Pennywise) was really nervous and concerned that he was traumatizing the child actors with his performance. After one especially intense scene one of the kids snapped out of his scared acting and enthusiastically told Skarsgard he really liked what he was doing with the character.

Fun Facts: They never really address it in the movie (which is irritating) but IT has this power that influences all the adults in town to be apathetic and ignorant to all of the murders and disappearances in Derry, it also makes some of them outright cruel. And the reason Pennywise doesn’t eat the kids right away whenever he gets the chance is that he feels they NEED to be terrified because it “salts the meat”.

This movie, in my opinion, deserved more love in the awards, but as usual in the horror genre, when it has great movies, it doesn't get the love it deserves (The Lighthouse, Hereditary, The Witch, Midsommar, Us, Pearl, etc) Bill Skarsgard's performance should've gotten him at least a nomination, and the movie should've been nominated for best picture.

I grew up in Maine, and for a long time thought adaptations of Stephen King stories didn't actually capture what towns in inland Maine are really like, until this. When I first saw that overhead shot of the (I believe Canadian) old mill town that they used for the fictional Derry, and the on-the-ground shots, the woods overlapping the edge of the town as if suburbs scarcely existed, the old packed in "balloon" housing further in, etc; it finally felt like a town I grew up next to. Even that one random "haunted house" in that exact style. There used to be this one abandoned house that looked so much like that on the opposite side of that town from me. It sat on a hill that overlooked part of the river between the canals and the old disused red-brick factories and mills that were slowly being renovated, we used to call it the Addams Family house and the Munsters' house. It's eerie, but it finally felt right in the weirdest way. ...Mainers are mostly a lot nicer and more attentive than the parents in Derry, though. But that's part of the plot. 😅

This one is closer to the spirit of the book than the first one was, but the first one was made as a TV mini series so it was very toned down. A major difference is that in the book the kids part takes place in the late 50's and the adult part is in the 80's, while in this one goes from the 80's to modern day. Also the book flipped from the kids story to the adult story almost chapter by chapter, while her obviously they did the kids as one movie and the adults as part 2. IT and The Stand(the unabridged version, not the version that the publishers first put out that chopped about 400 pages) are the only Stephen King books that I re-read every few years.

Great reaction - nice watching the two of you w these horror movies - and watching Pennywise jolt Kristen into jello was ... theraputic lol - this is IMO one of the best Stephen King movies - and seeing an 80s novel evoke such deeply felt nostalgia for 50s suburban childhood - that felt very close to King - another example is Stand By Me, another outstanding adap - and this link makes me think King is actually very close to Spielberg - a reason both are so popular, how they both plugged into that mainstream 80s sensibility - and yes, that projection scene really ... leaped out of the screen when I saw it lol

Late to the party on this one, I loved your reaction to this! These movies do a fairly decent job with the books material although the dates have been heavily adjusted for a more modern audience but the original setting for the kids in the late 50s makes a lot more sense. There is so much important information in the book that it would take several movies to really do it any kind of justice, the story is way deeper than you can imagine and honestly, much more terrifying, it's actually one of my all-time favorite books as it doesn't shy away from anything.

For an intersting comparison, you should check out the 1990 two part TV miniseries 'IT'. Tim Curry (from Rocky Horror Picture Show, Clue, Legend & Home Alone 2) also made a good Pennywise 🤡✌️.

Tim Curry's Pennywise was pretty frightening in the TV movie. The book has some crazy stuff in it, but my favorite is adult Ben learning that Pennywise is back in Derry and drinking down a pint glass of whiskey, then walking out of the bar stone sober.

YESSSS!! This is one of my favorite scenes in the book. I understand why it got cut, but it tells us SO much about adult Ben. I felt almost adds bad for him in this scene as I did in some of the 50s bullying scenes.

The movie is from the perspective of the kids so all the grownups seem kinda strange, also IT is looming over the town affecting the town and the people in it negatively, but yea basically all grownups is either evil or creepy ;) Oh yea, in the beginning when Georgie is looking for his boat he says "Bill is gonna kill me" which kinda is an easter egg premonition because Bill Skarsgård who plays Pennywise then shows up and does just that :)

So I actually live in southern Maine, and I remember in the weeks leading up to the release of this movie there were red balloons tied to a lot of mailboxes around our towns, fantastic marketing. However anyone who lives anywhere in not just Maine but all of New England could tell you that this movie was shot nowhere near Maine, nor do any part of the town look like Maine. It’s just funny how almost all of Stephen King’s best movie adaptations are set in Maine and yet they never shoot here. I get it, it’s probably really expensive, but you could at least get some landscape shots. Also Pennywise is essentially the nightmare fusion of Scarecrow, The Joker and a Bogart.

@@thedarkknight2221 Ahhh. Hey I don't mean anything by it, just saw this immediately after I said how this was closer to Maine than any adaptation and got curious how we had such different conclusions. I'm from the intersection of Oxford, Cumberland, and Androscoggin Counties. No idea if even naming the town would matter, but if I said the North end of the G-NG area, would that ring a bell? Haha Anyway, it's not perfect of course, but. Idk, maybe it's just me. I just thought compared to all of the other Stephen King adaptations we've gotten? Heck of a lot closer to something like Lewiston/Auburn, Rumford/Mexico, Lisbon Falls or Livermore Falls. Maybe not all of the neighborhood stuff (at least it doesn't look like midwest suburbs like the tv movie), but I thought that one aerial shot of the town kinda looked right. I think that was an old mill town in Canada, though. Think we don't give tax incentives that'd help much in filming on location.
