Istanbul is a city to walk, walk, walk and feel. Have tea on the edge of the Bosphorous, touch thousands to years of history, see the cobble stones, the deep blue waters, the rush of the boats in the morning on the Golden Horn, travel the overcrowded but clean tram, eat the same food at different prices😂. It is breathtaking and makes efforts to those who visit with its transportation system starting from the airport. This is much more than I can say of cities of my birth and education in Pakistan who despite being steeped in history have failed to preserve it.😢

I have just returned home from a 4 week holiday in Türkiye, 2 weeks spent in Istanbul. I have been before (albeit a long time ago - 2008 and 2010) and I revisited some places, but wanted to see thing I hadn't seen before. I was not in a hurry to rush in and out just to tick things off a bucket list. For example I spent just less than 2 hours in the Basilica Cistern (Yerebatan Sarnıcı) because I took the time to wait for the lighting to change to see the effect it had on spots I found interesting. Some light creates reflection, some removes the reflection and allows you to see into the water, some creates amazing shadow. I would say most people would have been inside for ½ hour. Because Istanbul is so busy (and crowded with post covid travellers) there are massive queues at many places. If you are not locked into a tour group, go as early as you can, or later. Aya Sofia at night is magical. Public transport is excellent and when you get comfortable using it you can explore anywhere. Take the ferry to Üsküdar. The ferry itself gives you another gives you another view of Istanbul. Venture beyond the waterfront. While there is a Sinan designed mosque (Mihrimah Sultan Cami) right near the ferry terminal, I ventured a little further to see another, the Atik Valide Mosque, then further to experience the look and feel of 2 beautiful modern mosques. I think it is important to recognise that Istanbul is also a modern cosmopolitan city and it is the combination of ancient, old and new that makes it a very special place to visit. My tip to get acquainted with city is to go in a food tour ASAP at the beginning of your holiday. It's more than just eating, you get all the cultural and culinary info that goes along with what you will be eating and you get to go on the ferry to the Asian side. I can recommend Yummy Istanbul 'A taste of 2 Continents' tour.

I worked in Turkey for 11 years in the yacht construction project management field (Tuzla to the East of Istanbul) and consequently spent a lot of time in Istanbul, it became my favourite city and was to us one of the most friendly, having left to work elsware all I can say is that I miss it madly and can't wait to get back, especially the hotel Alzair opposite the Blue Mosque, its been too long!

My Husband and I visited Turkey in September, 4 days in Istanbul, 3 days in Capadoccia, 3 days in Antalya and 3 days in Kas. I really loved the country side better. We loved Cappadocia but very disappointed that the price for Hot Air Balloon was outrageous! They were charging us $300 per person! So we decided not to do it but still enjoyed watching from the rooftop of our hotel. We enjoyed the ATV tour and the Open Air Museum. The food are amazing. Kas had really amazing views. We stayed at 2 different hotels. We also took ferry to Kaztellorizo, Greece. We love Turkey and maybe we will come back.

Istanbul was more than I expected , a beautiful city , filled with history , amazing food / desserts , arts and crafts , like pure copper rings and glass pendants , sooo pretty and unique , go and enjoy , one important piece of advice though , please watch out for the stairs at the stores in the old city , I have never seen stairs like that before , it does not have any railings , it’s almost like a hole in the sidewalk , if you not aware you could fall in , and it will be a very painful experience as a lot of it is carved from marble . Simply passing along as I was almost a victim . Besides that it’s all excellent

Thanks for the cool videos! I just got back from Istanbul (2nd time). I'm amazed that some people think Istanbul is a small city. I personally think it's one of the biggest cities in the world. I'd put it at about LA size. It's way bigger than Chicago. I'd put it at about Los Angeles size, maybe a bit smaller. On the scam question, I way overpaid for taxis a lot and I know they were charging me too much. I just didn't worry about it since it is still really cheap. Most taxi guys try to hide the meter as I'm sure you know. I paid probably 300 lira for a lot of 200 lira rides but I figure that even 300 lira is only like $20 USD. Also, down by sultanahmed the traffic was incredibly bad (especially by Galata Bridge) so it might be reasonable to pay a bit more. It's hard to communicate to people how beautiful the city of Istanbul is. I think it's one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

She really commented that, I was in shock! She didn’t like Istanbul at all because she only saw old buildings and the city “isn’t modern” as she was expecting, also didn’t see any high building, I guess she thought here was like Dubai 😅 I’m quite sure that as most tourists coming in huge groups from their own country, they only visited the old peninsula and Taksim and her comments where only based on that 🤦🏻‍♀️ They only visited 2 neighborhoods and she thought all the city was like that ☠️ This video is inspired on the comment sections on my two channels, Instagram DM’s and comments I have read on FB groups dedicated to Turkiye 😀 And a second video is coming soon because there’s more! 🙊

@@BeryIstanbulTips Exactly. It seems that too many people just travel to show off or to check a bucket list, without actually having a real interest in the place they are going to. And then you get the cheesy annoying mass tourism that are tormenting our cities today. What if half of those people crowding streets and monuments shouldn't actually be there? And it also triggers me as not only passionate about history and art, but also as an urbanist. Old cities have with their human scale design and stories a charm that is still unmatched in almost any modern urban area today, which are very car oriented. Dubai is perhaps only interesting to walk in a shopping mall, otherwise you see it only by car, from a tower or the beach. So even more thanks to people like you who do an effort to show deeper into all the special things that places have to offer!

As someone who lives in Maltepe (Kucukyali by the sea side) hmmmm I wouldn’t suggest staying as a tourist UNLESS staying here for a month or more and if somebody can find a short term rental flat since this area is very residential and most of landlords want long-term contracts, I have seen a few hotels around here, in fact, there is one just next to Hill Town shopping mall, but just getting to the European side takes some time and as someone who lives in this area knows it, yeah, we have the Marmaray but still, it takes about an hour or more to get to areas such Taksim/Galata or Sultanahmet. Good shopping center, maybe, I have quite close Hill Town shopping mall which is near the metro line Kadikoy-Sabiha Gökçen. Pendik, well, is even farther than Maltepe and I haven’t even been that far 😅

Hi there! I traveler to Cappadocia last year in late November, it was quite cold early morning and at night but during the day sometimes we could even take our coats off, just make sure that if you want to ride a hot air balloon, then you need to even wear a scarf and even gloves. When it comes to Istanbul, is the same, it is already getting colder and it could even be rainy. Hope this helps!

Just returned 0ct 29 22 from istanbul. I went to Istanbul dental center in Sisli area. Dr. Assim Amre blundered the job big time. Kept saying pain will go away no worry. Has not. Three crowns & a fill-in all on same side feel uneven. Pain on tooth with the fill-in; i suspect it needed a root canal & a crown. Ad is misleading. Shows the three sandalli founding siblings as the main experienced dentists, but i was signed to this 20 something, early thirties dentist. Had audacity to tell me, well if the discomfort does not away go see ia dentist in states. Now im seventeen hundred in debt and in pain in all four, when i only had some pain where fill-in was done

Anglophones are more or less arrogant, considering that all people on all countries should speak THEIR language. Hey First of all, I just came back from Turkey 2 days ago (visited Istanbul and Cappadocia) and your videos have been a holy grail to make me and my husband prepared for our trip. However, there were a few things that were not so pleasant for us in Istanbul 1. The traffic is one of the worst. And I am from Lahore. We have very back traffic there. Still I found traffic in Istanbul to be very very bad. Drivers are rash, traffic jams go for hours and for a tourist, it’s not advisable (at least in my meagre opinion) to travel by taxi as it would cost you a lot of your valuable time, along with money. As Bart Istanbul Tips has mentioned in a video earlier, the taxi drivers love to scam people. From our hotel to Sultan Ahmet was about 180-200 TL on Uber and the yellow taxi driver asked for 600 Liras. He only agreed on 250 TL and as we were late, we reluctantly agreed. Even the Uber drivers ask more than the price already stated. They ask you to cancel the trip and would take you to the same place for a higher price. If we don’t agree, they would cancel it. Once we had to wait for 30/40 minutes before we could get a cab that would not overcharge too much (although they still did a bit) Therefore, the best thing is either public transport or walk. We were so fed up with the taxis Once we walked from Blue mosque to grand bazar to Sulemaniye Mosque to Galata Tower (across the bridge) to Hodga Pasha just because we didn’t want the stress of Taxis and since it was Friday, the jam was crazy. We walked 20,000 steps that day, just for the reference. And don’t get me started on how untidy and filthy the taxis look from inside. The monuments and history this city has is so great that at times you think it’s all worth it. But when my husband rented a car (to drive to Cappadocia), a yellow bus hit him and ran away. You can imagine what big of a trouble that turned out for us. Even the locals there told us that they don’t drive in Istanbul and that people here just want to take money from tourists many hiking up the rates (which we witnessed first hand on innumerable occasions) The purpose of this rant is not to trash this beautiful city at all. The views, the mosques, the Bosphorus, the historical places are so beautiful that it’s almost magical. It’s so rich in culture. And as mentioned in the video, I, being a woman felt so safe walking back to my hotel even at 12 am. But, we felt that the city that has to offer so much should have been made a bit more tourist friendly so people coming there wouldn’t experience the difficulties we did. It’s such an amazing place, but unfortunately we might never go back there just because of the stress we got in those 3,4 days we were in Istanbul. But never say never I guess 😁 Lots of love, respect and appreciation for Istanbul, despite everything. Let me just edit a bit at the end that I loved turkey and made some great memories there. These are just few things that me and my husband weren’t really prepared for and therefore I felt I should share. There’s no hate or undue criticism whatsoever. Peace ✌🏽

Totally agree with what you said… I visited with my wife and in laws (who funny enough are also from Lahore). Our experience with the traffic and taxis were the same. I couldn’t even imagine renting a car and attempting to drive there. Having lived in Canada for over 13 years now this was definitely culture shock for us all… it was great and nice visiting Istanbul and seeing all it has to offer but we probably won’t go back.

7 years in 🇹🇷 and I do not dare driving here, at least not in the city, is just chaotic and Turks usually do not follow the rules, I sometimes ask myself hoe they obtain a driving license 😅 I have been driving since I was 16 years old, and I consider myself a good driver, even my friends always used to point me as the designated driver because I’m so responsible and always follow the traffic rules, I’m pretty sure that I soon as I start driving in Turkey especially in a big city like Istanbul I might have an accident by following the driving rules 😂 The only time I have driven was when we visited Cappadocia and on the roads there were literally no cars so it was easy to drive around, but in Istanbul, no way! I would never, I would panic right away 🥹

Istanbul is for walking and for ferries. Walk, walk and walk. It is actually not a tourist place in the true sense of the word. By the way, I have spent my professional educational period in Lahore and live near Lahore. Istanbul is a city to walk in and soak in the history. History is still alive and even a thousand years feel not far away. It is a place to live in a small hotel, have tea in common places, walk, walk, walk, and carry your baby around (which I did) and I saw a couple ( husband and wife ) each carrying a 3-4-year-old child on their backpack ( I understand this would in no way happen in our culture). Istanbul is not a city to shop or to do "touristy" things. An arranged tour group can provide a more “ sanitised” version of the city. Significant more extra dollars spent at a resort tour can provide everything arranged. It is a city still in connection with its past while shaping its future. It is not a place to snap shots at easy place. It is a place to have tea on the shores of the Bosphorous, sit in the sun next to the Ayasofia or the Blue Mosque, travel the public ferry, see people of all casts and creeds making their way through the city, feel the spirit while passing through its different neighborhoods. But in no way for driving :-). On the other hand, I wish that Lahore and many other cities ( including mine)had at least made a fraction of the effort in preserving their rich past of thousands of years old and made it at least somewhere on the list of cities to visit. Lahore, Multan, and many other Pakistani cities are built on the foundations of thousands of years of history. That has been allowed to decay due to continuous neglect. Had they made the effort to preserve their history, they could have made at least 10 museums in each city. Sadly that is all lost now. Walking through Istanbul is relatively safe at night. I am not sure the same can be said of our major Pakistani cities, especially for women.

I think you didn't do enough research regarding the traffic in Istanbul before you visited the city. First, you should always use the public transportation, especially the ferries and the metro. The city has a very developed and efficient public transportation system. Second, during certain hours (when people are leaving their home for work and when they are coming back home) you should avoid driving or taking a taxi whenever possible. Otherwise, you will get stuck in traffic four hours. The reason is simple. There 15+ million people and about 5 million vehicles in the city. During rush hours many people try to go from the Asian side to the European side or vice versa. All that traffic flow is channeled towards three bridges on the Bosphorus and one undersea tunnel between the two sides of the city.

Hı Bery, always enjoy the informative content and the video coverage of Türkiye (will like but not really comment). Many visitors talk of how friendly the people of Türkiye are. However, recently on a travelers forum I belong to, there was a discussion. A person described having a very difficult time at the airport when trying to enter the country as the airport officials were very rude and unkind. Further, the officials could not communicate in English. At a port of entry one would assume that officials know another language, especially English in order to best serve the visitors entering the country. Anyway, can I ask what are your thoughts on this behavior, have you seen/experienced this? Thank you.

  • @BeryIstanbulTips

    @BeryIstanbulTips

Hi!! Thanks a lot for watching our videos 🎉🎉 I think officials at the airport must speak English because as you just said, they are welcoming thousands of foreign visitors every day, it should be a requirement in order to work there, in my opinion. Maybe at some point they might sound rude because they can barely speak English but in my experience I have never had an uncomfortable situation with them but maybe it is because I speak Turkish so when I’m coming back to the country when I travel abroad and speak to them in their language they immediately change their behavior and ask me how long I’ve been living in the country, etc, a bit more friendly. I hope the situation will change and make the country more tourist-friendly.

First of all I was deeply disappointed with below points 1) Hardly anyone knows or understand english they simply don’t know what is butter. In India everyone understands English like it is culture there. 2) City appeared dirty and most of the people smoke in front of you 3) Public transport is poor and long walking distance in every transit. Bus hardly comes on exact time also bus stop there is hardly any sign of bus no 4) Bread is there on almost everytime literally I got constipation 5) Few people are honest. To go near places taxes charges 200-250 Lira. 6) Turkish Hamam most of people were from Uzbekistan although it was near Sultan Ahmed 7) Architecture and Mosque were beautiful. Blue Mosque is in renovation but light on minarets we’re turned off so could not captured the real beauty in evening time.

i am from istanbul Istanbul is no longer a beautiful city Because it received a lot of immigration. Some politicians brought the villagers to Istanbul to gain power and distributed the state lands to these people. That's why there are so many runaway, ugly buildings (slums) There are too many rude and bad people There are too many villagers I just stated it. The villagers were brought to Istanbul, which has a history of 2500 years, 70 years ago, by some politicians. The strange thing is that these villagers have not been from Istanbul in 72 years, they have not even been from the city. Because they do not want to be from Istanbul (urban). Even if it is not 70 years, but 700 years, they will not be urban. Istanbul's problem, in short, is this. Those who are not from Istanbul cannot see the problems of Istanbul.
