Israel, Palestine, and Gaza: A Painful Inflection Point

Palestinians and Israelis have been entangled in intense and often deadly conflict since the formation of Israel in 1948. What are the historical nuances that have led to this tragic moment and what might the future look like for the region? The goal of this event, open to UChicago students only, is to engage in deep listening and learning - with space to ask every type of question - absent acrimony.
Featuring writer and political analyst Yousef Munayyer, George Washington University history professor Arie Dubnov, historian and executive director of the Jerusalem Quarterly Roberto Mazza, and Laila el-Haddad, an author and social activist from Gaza. Moderated by IOP Speaker Series and Fellows director Jennifer Steinhauer.

The big question is whether to believe in universalistic nationalism ("equal rights for all citizens regardless of race, religion, or ethnic origin") or particularistic nationalism ("this country is for Jews/Palestinians/Christians/Muslims/whites/blacks") Both the Israelis and the Palestinians appear to be caught in a particularistic doom loop. I guess the message is: Say Yes to staying in the U.S., whether you're a Jewish-American or a Palestinian-American. And say no to the particularistic nationalists of all stripes. Especially say no to those who advocate emigration to the Western coast of Asia.

The United States has a moral obligation to defend Israel's existence. At the same time, however, it is important for all Americans, whatever their religion or ethnicity, to recognize that Israel has a Potemkin Village feel. It bills itself as a safe haven when it is anything but. Theodore Herzl never visited America; if he had, he might have seen that Jews and Gentiles lived in peace and harmony as equal citizens of a great republic. Yes, we have discrimination here, and it must be fought. But Israel has something much worse: armed and dangerous neighboring states controlled by leaders who are genuine antisemites.
