Israel's fears, its delusions and its future | Daniel Levy | The Big Picture S3Ep7

Is there a path back from the brink for Israel and Palestine?
Under the blinding influence of fury and revenge after the October 7 attack, Israel has waged a relentless war in Gaza which killed more than 11,000 Palestinians and displaced more than 1.5 million people.
But beyond its stated aim to eliminate Hamas, there seems to be no plan for what happens the day after, or what would stop the wheel of violence from continuing to spin.
This week on The Big Picture podcast, we sit down with former Israeli negotiator and analyst Daniel Levy, who now heads the US-Middle East Project.
Levy argues that despite the terrifying language now normal within Israeli society, there is still an offramp, and even a road to peace.

I am a Canadian Christian. I was so pro Israel until I watched a video of how Israeli protesters voiced how they hate Africans and was so proud to be racist against black Africans. Then i saw Palestinians homes being sprayed bulldozed down. My first response was , What !!! I couldn't believe this was actually happening in the holy land. I use to feel connected to them, because our struggles was almost the same. Now what i see them doing to the Palestinians is beyond evil. It is wicked. You cannot kill a whole bunch of innocent people (women and babies) to catch a few bad guys. This is unthinkable. Look lets call this what it is Benjamin Netanyahu needed an excuse to bomb the hell out of Palestine to put up new settlement for more Americans and European Jews (white). The Palestinians people was not the ones who put 6 million Jewish people in the gas chamber and do experiments on them. It was the Germans. SHAME ON ANYONE WHO THINKS THIS IS OK.

Could you point me in the direction of some videos like you mention. The only streaming I'm currently on is utoob. So on there would be best... From what I've seen, I don't doubt this. I'm so-called "white" and I despise the despicable ideology of white supremacy, no matter what religion or not people try to pretend bolsters it. Pretends.

Quick question, I agree with everything you said but you had me scratching my head about when you said you are going through the same struggle, not to mention that your Palestinian Christian brethren have suffered for over 70 years under this racist apartheid voilent and vile regime but are the muslims the struggle you are on about? I hope I am wrong about this but wow what an eye opener for you ay

You speak with such confidence from your position in Western Europe, but let's not forget that Islamic religious leaders have called for a global jihad on the Jewish community. And while you may find success in Western Europe, do not underestimate the strong presence of Judaism in North America, where there are 8.9 million followers compared to just 3.7 million Muslims. Not to mention the 87 million evangelicals who view the Jewish community as their own. So go ahead, try to spread your jihadist ideology in North America. But remember, this is our territory, not yours. And don't forget the 626,000, mostly Jewish, who marched through the streets of Washington DC. So let's not make any mistakes here. I wish we had more rational and honest individuals like Daniel in positions of power. The world would be a better place. But somehow we end up with the worst of the worst in top roles. I hope from the bottom of my heart that justice will be made in the name of all the innocent lives that were lost and of all the suffering caused. And I hope that Israeli people will have the courage and dignity to stand up for what's right and make their own politicians pay the price for their corrupt intentions. I and I hope people everywhere will hold their own "leaders" accountable for declaring their unconditional support to an abusive state such as Israel and calling it their "friend" and speaking in the name of the country they were representing. So irresponsible considering the history of abuse of Israel. The international community has demonstrated TOTAL INCOMPETENCE and complicity. They all need to be held accountable. Not just Netanyahu. In the name of all the children killed and of all the lives that were ruined.

Anyone who wants power is the one that is more suceptible to corruption. So those who ask for your vote are the ones you should not vote. That's why the worst reach power, beause a humble person does not want it. Only the power hungry and psychophats wants to get elected. Also these same people write the laws, so why should they write a law that goes against their own interests? Man cannot write his own punishments because he will go soft on himself. The only way is to follow the law of God.

Excellent discussion. Kudos, gentlemen. Current events in Gaza has much of the world holding Israel in pariah status. Backs will be turned. Sanctions applied. Visas refused. Only when Israeli society humbles itself and sincerely wants reconciliation with their Palestinian peoples, will these measures be relaxed. Spoken as one who lived under apartheid in South Africa. For all its evil, it was mild compared to the present Palestinian ethnic cleansing. In our case, there were a number of internal factors that influenced SA voters. Sanctions only hardened the resolve to fight the world. Christians began to repent and pray for God's intervention. Also, the young intelligentsia moved beyond the racial divides in many cases, allowing us to see our 'enemies' as fellow humans, thus eliciting compassion and kindness. Society broke the back of Apartheid by literally removing support from the apartheid leaders.

I think Israel owes the Palestinians alot MORE then allowing 2 narrow strips to be connected by a tunnel. They are not animals. Lives have been lost, homes repossessed, children jailed without trial, lands being taken, olive trees destroyed. I can't believe you made this statement trying to make it seem charitable. Palestinians are not animals just as the Jewish victims of the Holocaust are not animals and were compensated not only with money but the British stepped in with the Belfour Declaration, ensuring safe passage and military backup for Jews to go to Palestine and settle there. Not only that there is a lasting legacy that no bad deeds done by Jewish groups can ever be criticised without the continual threat of being chased after with the label of anti semitism. The US has become the Israeli cash cow where 10 mil USD of American tax payer money is channeled to Israel DAILY. It seem compensation for the atrocities that Jewish ppl suffered will continue till judgement day and meanwhile you think a tunnel will cut it for the Palestinians? Extremely delusional and really reflects the hidden bigotry in your heart.

Muslims lived peacefully with Christians and jews. Zionists ruined it. Zionism and Judaism are two different things. Zionists can never live in peace with Palestinians because they don't want to. Their main aim is to have the whole chicken to them selves without giving it to the Palestinians. Fact is that the Palestinians welcomed these Zionists in their country but did not allow them to make illegal settlements which they are doing. Tge simple solution is to give back Palestinians what they deserve. Their land.

International legitimacy and common sense don't need to be metaphorized into a moral or geopolitical law,it inherently inculcated into human psyche to be fair and just to your fellow human being who may be your neighbour or compatriot, But Israel and the jews at larg since its stablishment on Palestinians land have never been kind and benevolent to native inhabitants ,. Jewish state behaved as a cruel occupier and brazenly and impunisouly killed in pillaged the local Arabs to force their exodus and this pogrom continued and still going on for last eight decades.Almost four generations of Palestinians raised on this tragic social platform for whom liberation of their homeland assumed as relegious duty and Muslims masses across the world sympathised with them, This whole miasma created by wicked Britisher is deliberate attempt to destabilize the world peace in vengeance to their debacle from world politics which yearns to be free and fair owing to the breakthrough of science and technology.

It's always so refreshing to hear from Daniel on this issue. There are many people who are doing great work focusing on the plight of the Palestinians and convincing the western world that they need our solidarity, but we cannot forget the importance of also taking a step back from that to scour the landscape for paths to peace. It's very easy to imagine all the ways this could continue or get worse, but it takes a special kind of understanding and clarity of purpose to imagine the best ways to realistically resolve this. It's clear that Daniel is dedicated to finding the best solution, and I can only hope that he and others like him have the ear of those in power whenever we are able to get some sort of negotiations going on a long-term solution.

I think a big point that's undervalued here is the accountability of politicians. The Israeli ones will always be answerable to people who fundamentally won't agree to big concessions (concessions from their perspective), and perhaps more importantly, US politicians will be too scared to be a neutral broker if their perpetuation as elected officials every couple of years hinges on donors who are pro-Israel.
