"New" isn't really a word I'd use to describe someone who's been doing this for almost 20 years. But sure, he has gained more world wide popularity in the past 5 years, so he's on the newer side to audiences outside Finland.

When I grew up, the mouth is what we did at home mostly. But if you ever had to go to hospital for some reason, they always did it in the ass, in a very rough way too so that it did hurt. Because I had lots of ear-infections as a kid I ended up in hospital a few times and got pretty much 'violated' every time. The 80ies were a barbaric time...

So, I needed to take my temperature a few years back. I happened to be visiting my mother and stepfather. There was a thermometer in a small cup on the window sill. I asked my stepfather if I could use it and if it was clean. He said sure, and it's been washed. Well I gave it a quick rinse anyway and put it under my tongue. After I checked it, my mom walked into the kitchen and I told her it was normal. She asked where I found the thermometer. I said "it was right there on the window sill". Well she got the oddest mix of disgust and impending laughter on her face. Then she said "that's the dogs thermometer, there's a forehead thermometer in our bathroom". I'm still not that sure how pissed I should have been. I still feel a bit sick when I think of it. Was that a shitty thing to do?

@dutoiu hour Are we talking about same thermometer here, the mercury one, cause digital "pistol type" models are often used to measure from ear, but i havent seen anyone showing mercury/glass version in their ear? O.o Armpit is most common method in Finland even today, as its most accurate far as i understand on thermometers you can buy for cheap to home use. The ass option is mainly utilized for small children/babies who wont keep still, or are too young, or restless to hold it in armpit or mouth... witch is exact reason why kids suddenly start to learn real fast to be still, unless they actually like it in the ass, or be accustomed to it in church choir... That was so in my youth but now days it seems those pistol models are used most often in hospitals and patients are looked like poor plebs when they state that they had fever when measured at home with armpit type of model.. then again doctors do hate patients who self diagnose even if patient is completely right about it.

It would only be up to 4 yo. Young children can't be trusted to keep it in the mouth, therefore no accuracy.

It's not just a Finnish thing, my mother did use that way after childhood. It's not as accurate, rectal, or oral.

Rule of thumb: armpit temperature + 1°C = rectal temperature. Because on average the difference between rectal and armpit temperature is just about 1°C (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8542011 ). Anything more accurate than that isn't going to make much of a difference, or are you seriously going to be the one who goes to work sick or doesn't go to the hospital because the thermometer missed that crucial "panic temperature" by 0.4°C?

I liked messing with my kids... I'd ask them which one you want, mouth or butt. Naturally they would say mouth. I'd put the thermometer in their mouth, look at the container that held the thermometers and say... oops... give me that one back, that is the one that goes in your butt. Or I'd wait and when I pulled it out and looked at the temp. I would say damn it, this the one for your butt.

You know, the third option has a good reason. It's... well, literally the most accurate way to tell the exact temperature ... the other two can show a slightly incorrect temperature. Also the new technologies....they are simply not foolproof...the ass is! 😂😂😂

The French just seem to like it and they are encouraged to get used it to at an early age." Just saying.
