Islamic Homeschooling for Beginners: Why & How to Start | Shaheen Rasheed

Muslim homeschooling is a growing trend, but it can be daunting to know where to start. This video is all about Muslim homeschooling for beginners: why you should do it, and how to get started.
You'll hear from a former teacher who have been homeschooling for years, and get all the information you need to take the plunge. So watch now and learn everything you need to know about Muslim homeschooling!
Muslim parents are increasingly turning to full-time Islamic schools or homeschooling as a haven for their children from public schools antagonistic to their values. As wait lists grow at Islamic schools, frustrated parents are unsure what to do next.
Education Consultant, Shaheen Rasheed of Soulful Studies, and representatives from the East Bay and Silicon Valley Muslim homeschool organizations of the Bay Area discuss how to become a homeschooling family, what services and programs they offer, and what’s caused the current growth in demand for homeschooling.
Sponsored by East Bay Muslim Homeschoolers & the Silicon Valley Muslim Homeschoolers

What is Homeschooling?
Homeschooling is an educational approach where parents or guardians choose to educate their children at home instead of sending them to a traditional public or private school. It involves providing a comprehensive education to children within the comfort of their own homes.
In homeschooling, parents typically take on the role of primary educators. They develop or choose a curriculum, create lesson plans, and teach the material to their children. Parents can also choose to outsource the teaching to qualified tutors and resources to help with teaching their children. Homeschooling can be customized to fit every child’s individual needs, interests, and learning styles.
Why Homeschool?
The reasons for homeschooling vary from family to family. Some common motivations include a desire for religious or moral education, a more personalized education, concerns about the school environment or curriculum, the child’s unique needs, the family’s financial situation, or flexibility in scheduling.
Is Homeschooling legal?
The legality of homeschooling depends on the country and sometimes the specific region within a country. Laws and regulations regarding homeschooling can vary significantly.
In many countries, homeschooling is legal and recognized as a legitimate educational option. Some countries have specific homeschooling laws that outline requirements and procedures for parents to follow. These laws may include provisions such as mandatory notifications to educational authorities, periodic assessments, curriculum standards, or teacher qualifications.
It is crucial for parents considering homeschooling to research the laws and regulations in their specific country, state, or region to ensure compliance with local requirements. Local homeschooling organizations, support groups, or Education consultants, such as Soulful Studies, can provide valuable information and guidance regarding the legal aspects of homeschooling in a particular area.

MashaAllah very well said Shaheen ! I’ve home schooled my youngest for only a few months in his eight grade … because his grades were going quite low & had some other difficulties in his school with bullying etc, during the times of 9/11 … so I decided to take him out from such stress & challenges & helped him get A’s later in subjects / classes where he was struggling in his studies, classmates & the attitudes of some of his teachers … not understanding his distress & his then affected disabilities…And now that I have a grandchild I think I wouldn’t mind doing that again, if all other family members agree to it for saving our upcoming generations …from the prevalence of all these evils which are getting so much obvious these days in all societies around. So I’d say to all those who can’t see what’s happening out there, please home school your kids, before it gets too late … as God forbid you may loose them all completely to this destructive world … May Allah swt, help us all help each other’s children & stick together as a thriving community & prosper together as one good Ummah . امین🤲🏻🌹💫

Sister Shaheen thank you for this lecture, May Allah make it heavy on your scales - I’m not a parent or even married yet (make duaa for me) but this is something that has been weighing heavily on my mind considering my own experience and the state of public school education right now, it put a smile on my face to hear how many families are homeschooling in the Bay Area. Ive learned a lot from this lecture and feel more confident in standing firm in this decision InshaAllah

I want to homeschool my children because I fear they might be exposed to unsafe content & community. You know bullying, inappropriate content & harrasments those affect children & cause them PSTD post-stressed traumatic syndrome.

A lot of what we were taught in school was either incorrect or one sided. For that reason we decided to avoid buying/using the same curriculum.

This is so encouraging. We are starting to homeschool our son. It's frightening because it is still not a common thing in our place. I really need many references and learn from experienced family.

Although talk has a lot of good information on steeling yourself for the homeschooling journey, she speaks largely from her own first generation immigrant experience; her audience must be the same. There's an entire group of American Muslims who have been homeschooling for 50+ years. It's not a new phenomenon in the African American Muslim community, because of the reasons she listed and so many more. The accessibility and acceptance that homeschoolers have today though, has improved over years. I appreciate her perspective as an educator turned homeschool educator because that in itself is a novel worthy journey.

Zahra try to ask Shaheen to forward you a list of home schooling moms close to your area or start making a group yourself by pitching in to help each other take turns in learning the skills needed to teach whatever area/ subject you may bd good at & start off from there. You’ll be surprised how easy it gets to do so “United” by the help & blessings, which you’ll get from Allah swt for such a good intent for your child . Don’t forget our children should always be the greatest of both world investment!👍🏻💫
